SOURCE:Flight International Elbit Systems lands helmet-mounted display deal with South Korea By Arie Egozi
Elbit Systems has received a contract to supply advanced helmet-mounted display systems for the South Korean army's Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) programme.
Under the deal, Elbit will supply prime contractor Korea Aerospace Industries with equipment for its ongoing development effort, which is expected to lead to the manufacture of up to 250 tactical transport helicopters. The Israeli company's initial contract covers those development aircraft due to be delivered in 2009-10, but it believes the agreement could lead to follow-on orders to equip the entire KUH fleet and additional military rotorcraft.
"We believe this selection will lead to further head-up display projects in South Korea and worldwide," says Yoram Shmuely, co-general manager of Elbit's Aerospace Division.
Elbit says its helmet-mounted display systems enable helicopter pilots to fly with their "head out of the cockpit", boosting situational awareness and safety by projecting essential flight data, plus navigation waypoints and threat data into their line of sight.

- South Korea orders its 100th Sigma 40 navigation system from Sagem
Paris, Le Bourget, Euronaval 2012, October 23, 2012
South Korea has ordered its 100th shipborne Sigma 40 inertial navigation system from Sagem (Safran group), confirming its confidence in the system’s laser gyro technology.
The Sigma 40 is a high-performance shipborne inertial navigation system. It is available in several different versions to cover operational needs for all types of warships, from corvettes to nuclear submarines.
These units are widely used by the South Korean navy as original equipment or higher-performance retrofits on both surface vessels and submarines, including PKX patrol boats, FFX frigates and U-209 and KSS-1 submarines.
This latest Sigma order consolidates Sagem’s leadership with the world’s most powerful navies. Part of the ship’s combat system, the Sigma 40’s high-precision measurements contribute to weapon accuracy and performance.
Sagem’s Sigma 40 navigation systems now handle the main navigation function on more than 300 surface vessels (corvettes, frigates, aircraft carriers) and over 50 submarines in 11 different classes, including nuclear (Rubis-Améthyste class), non-nuclear air-independent propulsion (AIP) and conventional propulsion models.

S. Korea moves to upgrade Patriot defense system SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean military's Patriot Advanced Capability-2 (PAC-2) system has a success rate of less than 40 percent in intercepting ballistic missiles, government sources said Sunday.
Due to the noticeable inefficiency in deterring North Korean missiles, the PAC-2 system can only be useful in intercepting airplanes, prompting the South's military to rush to introduce the more advanced PAC-3 system, said the sources.
PAC-2 has been deployed to counter increasing threats from the North's low-flying, short- and medium-range missiles, as part of Seoul's plan to build an independent theater missile defense shield, dubbed the Korean Air and Missile defense (KAMD) network system.
"The Korea Institute for Defense Analyses and the Missile Defense Agency of the U.S. have just concluded a joint study on the KAMD and found that the PAC-2 system has an interception success rate of below 40 percent," said a ranking government official.
"A variety of simulations have concluded that in order to raise the interception rate to above 70 percent, the (South Korean) military has to move to the PAC-3 system."
South Korea has bought 48 PAC-2 systems, including launchers, from Germany at a cost of 1 trillion won (US$909 million) but the PAC-2 launchers can't be used for the PAC-3 system.
Another government source said, "The core computer system in PAC-2 is superannuated. The system has to be diverted for interception of fighters."
At the Security Consultative Meeting (SCM) in Washington last week, South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin said that his government will push to build the PAC-3 system. In order to strengthen the total missile system, Kim also stressed South Korea would establish a "kill chain" to detect, target and destroy North Korean ballistic missiles, which are capable of hitting South Korea, Japan and Guam.
Military officials said the PAC-3 and kill chain systems will be pushed in close coordination, forecasting that the PAC-3 system will be introduced starting in 2014.
In a related development, Seoul's defense ministry has strongly denied that South Korea could participate in the U.S. missile defense system, saying that building the KAMD never means participating in U.S. efforts to build a multi-layer defense system.
U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday after the SCM talks with Kim that Washington is still in consultations with Seoul over its future role in a regional missile defense system, raising speculations Seoul could take part in the U.S. missile defense system.

Korea's standoff missile purchase project faces hurdles
A U.S.-made air-to-ground missile South Korea has pushed to purchase in order to arm its main F-15K fighter jets does not fit the aircraft because of a design inconsistency with the missile, a senior procurement official said Monday.
The finding is expected to delay South Korea's project to purchase a standoff missile system to be loaded with its fighter jets so as to bolster its airborne combat capabilities against North Korea.
Lockheed Martin's Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) with a 370-kilometer range has been considered a favorite, as the U.S. firm offered a cheaper price than its German competitor Taurus System's 500-km standoff missile.
A recent test showed, however, that Lockheed's JASSM doesn't fit the F-15K, as its upper wing folds only to the left side. The Defense Acquisition and Procurement Administration (DAPA) has asked Boeing, the F-15K maker, and Lockheed Martin about ways to install the missile on the F-15K, but both have not responded, the official said.
"To install the JASSMs in both wings of the F-15K, either F-15K's pylon or the JASSM's upper wing should be modified, but it would cost a lot," the official said.
If JASSMs cannot be installed in both of the F-15K wings, he added, it could cause imbalance in the aircraft, which raises the risk of loss of control and crashing.
While U.S. government has not given an answer for the request for the JASSM sale to Korea, the structural problem could further delay Seoul's plan to adopt the standoff missile system for the nation's fleet of 60 F-15K jets.
"Even if the U.S. government approves the JASSM sale to South Korea, it would be difficult to buy it if these problems are not resolved," the official said.
Another standoff missile by German defense contractor Taurus has a longer missile strike capability with a 500-km range, but it would need much more than the budget proposed by the government.
"The DAPA has negotiated with Taurus officials until recently, but gaps remain over the price," the official said, without elaborating.

(2nd LD) Air Force aerobatic jet crashes in South Korea HOENGSEONG, South Korea, Nov. 15 (Yonhap) -- An Air Force aerobatic jet crashed in northeastern South Korea on Thursday, killing its lone pilot and sparking a brush fire, police said.
The T-50B plane went down at 10:28 a.m. on a mountain in Hoengseong, about 90 kilometers east of Seoul, and its pilot, identified only as Capt. Kim, 32, is believed dead, officials said.
A parachute was found hanging from a tree about 70 meters from the scene, but the pilot was believed to have failed to eject, officials said.
It was one of two planes that took off from an air base in nearby Wonju at 10:23 a.m. Witnesses in the area said the two jets flew in parallel before one of them went down in flames.
The crash also sparked a fire at the scene and firefighters are trying to get the blaze under control.
The plane belonged to the Air Force aerobatic team, known as "Black Eagles." The T-50B, which derives from the T-50 trainer jet, is designed exclusively for air shows. It is the first time the model has crashed.
The cause of the crash is not yet known.

South Korea mulls importing Iron Dome
Israel is offering the missile defense system in exchange for buying four patrol boats.
18 November 12 19:42, Yuval Azulai
The Ministry of Defense is in talks with South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd (KSX: 42669) to purchase four patrol boats for the Israel Navy to protect Israel's exclusive economic zone. If the $400 million deal goes ahead, the ministry is expected to demand reciprocal procurements by Korea of the advanced missile interception system made by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd.
Earlier this year, Korean Aerospace Industries Ltd. (KAI) lost the Ministry of Defense tender for the Air Force's new jet trainer to Italy's Alenia Aermacchi, to Korea's bitter disappointment. Sources close to the issue believe that the new deal to buy Korean patrol boats could ease the disappointment in Seoul. In the bidding for the jet trainers, Korea offered reciprocal procurements centered on the Iron Dome missile interceptor. The offer is partly because of the threat to South Korea from North Korean missiles.
Ministry of Defense director general Udi Shani is reviewing the matter. In addition to buying patrol boats from Daewoo, the ministry is considering other reciprocal procurement offers, including from Lockheed Martin Company (NYSE: LMT), which produces the F-35 stealth jet fighter, which the Air Force will use; a German shipyard; or for the patrol boats to be built by Israel Shipyards Ltd. The Ministry of Defense has already considered and dropped the idea of procuring US patrol boats, because of their high cost. Production of the boats in Israel was also dropped after staff work by the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Finance because of the need for heavy investment in the necessary infrastructure.
Unveiling Iron Dome to the world
The Navy's new ships will carry state-of-the-art technologies, command and control systems, and combat systems built by Israeli companies. The decision which shipyard will build the ships will be made in a few weeks.
Defense sources say that, regardless of the ships deal, the Ministry of Defense will continue its efforts to sell Iron Dome to other countries, and it has displayed the system at defense shows around the world for this purpose. The sources say that South Korea is a market for the Iron Dome regardless of the deal for patrol boats.
The Ministry of Defense said today, "Manufacturers in four countries are bidding to sell patrol boats for the Israel Navy's needs. Belying the reports, the Ministry of Defense makes it clear that no decision has been made on the matter. The defense establishment is examining the various offers in order to obtain the best result for the needs of the Navy and the State of Israel. When a decision is made, we will announce it through the usual channels."

- South Korea deploys new cruise missiles: report
Seoul, Nov 23:
South Korea has begun fitting naval destroyers with a new, indigenously-developed cruise missile capable of making precision strikes anywhere in North Korea, a news report said today.
Yonhap news agency quoted a senior military official as saying the South had armed two destroyers with 32 of its Hyunmu 3C Tomahawk-style cruise missiles.
The missiles have a range of 400 km and are capable of reaching targets in the farthest corners of North Korea within a three meter (nine foot) degree of accuracy, the report said.
The unidentified military official said the deployment was partly a response to North Korea’s strengthened naval presence off the peninsula’s west coast.
The North recently completed a military hovercraft base at Koampo on its southwestern coast, which could be used to attack South Korean islands near the disputed Yellow Sea border.
The maritime boundary was the scene of deadly naval clashes in 1999, 2002 and 2009.
Seoul strengthened its troop presence and upgraded its weaponry on a number of “frontline” islands following North Korea’s shelling exactly two years ago of Yeonpyeong island that killed two South Korean marines and two civilians.
The border is not recognised by Pyongyang, which argues it was unilaterally drawn up by the US-led United Nations forces after the 1950-53 Korean war. thehindubusinessline | |

SEOUL — The South Korean Army will deploy 600 wheeled armored vehicles from 2016 to help build rapid-response forces modeled after U.S. Stryker combat brigades, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
The arms agency announced Hyundai Rotem, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, as the preferred bidder Nov. 26 to develop and produce those wheeled armored vehicles. The company beat a consortium of Samsung Techwin and Doosan DST.
“Hyundai Rotem will develop a couple of prototype vehicles with six and eight wheels by 2015 with investment of about 28 billion won ($26 million),” a DAPA spokesman said. “After field tests, the company will produce 600 vehicles in stages by 2020.”
The DAPA and Hyundai Rotem will sign a final contract in December for the wheeled armored vehicle development, said the spokesman.
The Army expects the wheeled combat vehicle to improve its ability to deploy rapidly with enhanced tactical mobility.
“With the number of infantry troops being reduced under a defense reform plan, we should cover wider combat zones with better survivability and striking capability,” an Army official said. “We believe the deployment of wheeled infantry carrier vehicles will help solve this problem, to an extent.”
Under a military modernization program announced in 2005, the South Korean Army plans to deploy high-tech tanks and armored vehicles that boost firepower and battlefield mobility while reducing force strength.
The service will cut more than 20 of its 47 infantry divisions and turn many of the remaining ones into mechanized units. http://www.defensenews.com/article/20121204/DEFREG03/312040004/S-Korea-Produce-Wheeled-Armored-Vehicles?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

Boeing has demonstrated affordable unmanned aircraft technology that could be integrated onto Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) MD 500 helicopters to expand the fleet’s mission capabilities.
A Boeing Unmanned Little Bird (ULB) demonstrator aircraft, a variant of the highly successful MD 500 helicopter, autonomously flew for approximately 25 minutes at the ROKA Aviation School in Nonsan.
The demonstration showcased proven pilotless capabilities available for integration onto rotorcraft to support intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), resupply and other missions.
Korean Air supported transportation of the ULB for this demonstration. Korea Air Aerospace Division (KAL-ASD) assembled ROKA MD 500s from 1976 to 1987 under license from Boeing heritage companies Hughes Helicopters and McDonnell Douglas. KAL delivered approximately 500 MD 500s to Hughes Helicopters, opening the Korean aircraft export market.
“Boeing and KAL continue to build on a history of collaboration to offer our customers innovative solutions, grow new business, and expand Korea’s aerospace and defense industry capabilities,” said Joseph Song, vice president and managing director for Boeing’s defense, space and security business in the Republic of Korea.
Korean Air Aerospace Division (KAL-ASD), a division of Korean Air, provides design, manufacturing, marketing and maintenance products and services for aircraft, satellites and launch vehicles.
