Alenia Aeronautica delivers the Tornado IS 86, RET7 series-lead, to the Italian Air Force
Alenia Aeronautica, a Finmeccanica company, has delivered today to the Italian Air Force the Tornado IS86 (MM 7087), the series-lead of 15 aircraft envisaged by Italian Air Force’s IT Basic Full MLU (RET 7) retrofit programme. The event, held at Italian Air Force’s Ghedi base, was attended by Air Brigade General Enzo Vecciarelli, Combat Forces Commander (CFC), Air Brigade General Roberto Nordio, Chief of the 4th Division of the Air Force’s Staff and by Ghedi base Commander, Col. Francesco Vestito. The RET 7 contract, concerning the second tranche of airplanes due to undergo retrofitting (the first tranche, called ‘First Upgrade’, involved 18 aircraft and was completed in 2006), is part of the Mid Life Upgrade (MLU) development programme whose aim is to define a configuration capable of assuring the full and improved efficiency of the Tornados for many years to come. In fact the RET 7 contract has introduced (amongst other things), NVG (Night Vision Goggles) capability, allowing to operate at nights with the same (if not better) day efficiency, ELT (Emergency Locator Transmitter), improving the activity’s safety, MMR (Multi Mode Receiver), adding to the MLS (Microwave Landing System) that of the ILS function (Instrumented Landing System) and the MIDS (Multi Information Distribution System), allowing the aircraft to operate in a net-centric manner, which is typical of the NCW (Net Centric Warfare) scenarios of the 21st century. Thanks to such upgrades and the operational capabilities assured by the entirely automated targetacquisition system “RecceLite”, the new MLU Tornados are capable of operating more effectively in support of out-of-area operations, fully integrating with the allied reconnaissance forces and air reaction. The work on the remaining 14 aircraft is proceeding as per schedule, at Alenia Aeronautica’s Torino-Caselle site, with shipment of the last unit to take place by the end of the first semester of 2012.

Iveco signs first contract with Italian Army for the MPV / VTMM Ambulance version
Iveco Defence Vehicles announces that on December 20th, 2010 the Italian Army placed order for a batch of 12 MPV in the Ambulance version (named VTMM Ambulance by the Italian Army) to be delivered between 2011 and 2012.
The Ambulance version of the MPV-VTMM has been developed on the basis of the MPV 4x4 platform increasing the volumes and ergonomy. The vehicle is equipped with two stretchers and will transport a crew of 4 people: driver, commander, medical officer, nurse. A suitable system for loading stretchers has been developed. The vehicle will be equipped with NBC protection system.
MPV – VTMM 4x4
Since its official presentation at Eurosatory 2010, MPV-VTMM vehicle family has made decisive steps towards serial production. The MPV-VTMM family is based on a military off the shelf truck chassis combined with a protected crew cell which incorporates the driver’s cabin and cargo compartment. In the 4x4 version the safety cell offers more than 13m3 volume, whereas in the ambulance version this volume is increased to 16 m3. The maximum combat weight of up to 18 tonnes and a chassis capable of mastering the toughest of terrains therefore give MPV-VTMM 4x4 excellent tactical mobility in all missions.
The MPV family leverages on the know how of two of the major European companies involved in armoured vehicles production, Iveco DV and Krauss- Maffei Wegmann (KMW) of Germany. In June 2008 the two companies had signed a cooperation agreement on the development of a new military vehicle family in the weight class of 18 to 25 tons.
For the VTMM-MPV Ambulance, Iveco is responsible for the final protection level and for the integration of all specific equipment according to the requirements of the Italian Army.
Crew protection against mines and IED was accorded particular priority during the design process. The integrity of the crew cell is maintained through a series of design features. The bonnet is hinged to the chassis rather than the crew cell and the rear cargo compartment is so designed that it will readily blow off, allowing the energy from a mine blast to dissipate. The base steel armour of the crew cell provides a high level of ballistic protection and this can be further enhanced through the use of appliqué protection developed in co-design with IBD to meet the predicted threat.
The MPV-VTMM family of vehicles is based on military off-the shelf (COTS) high mobility chassis derived from the Trakker range, which not only provide a superior mobility but also allow the customer to exploit the Iveco worldwide logistic system. The MPV-VTMM 4x4 is equipped with the Cursor 8 engines coupled with semiautomatic gearbox and differential-locking system, permanent all-wheel drive with automatic tyre-pressure regulation and run-flat tyres.
The MPV family can effortlessly take on slopes of up to 60% and ride along side slopes up to 30% – at a range of more than 700 km, or 430 miles, without refueling. The modular design allows the crew compartment to be readily configured in a variety of different roles.
The future of VTMM
The MPV-VTMM platform, due to this flexibility, can be declined in several other versions, while maintaining the level of protection of basic configuration. Some of the possibilities already under study and development are:

Alenia Aermacchi rolls out Italy's first T-346 trainers
Flight International
Citation :
The Italian air force's first two T-346A advanced jet trainers were rolled out at Alenia Aermacchi's Venegono plant in December, ahead of their planned delivery to the service's Test Wing at Pratica di Mare air base by mid-April.
Once handed over, the M-346 variants will enter "an intensive operational test and evaluation period", says Brig Gen Enzo Vecciarelli, the air force's combat forces commander. "In the meantime we have put together, with Aermacchi's industrial team, a joint office to better respond to our requirements and ease the aircraft's service introduction," he says.
Another four T-346s will be delivered during 2011 and assigned to the air force's flight school at Lecce. Instructors will start converting to the type in 2012 and the first trainee pilots should fly it the following year, Vecciarelli says.
Alenia Aermacchi chief executive Massimo Lucchesini says the last two aircraft from the six-strong batch are already in work on the company's M-346 production and final assembly line. Another nine will be produced for the Italian air force, and work is also being undertaken on Singapore's order for 12 of the type.
The assembly line will have a start-up production rate of 24 aircraft a year, with the capability to double that number

AMI Inaugurates First Fixed Air Defence Radar Systems
The Italian Air Force (AMI) has inaugurated the first of 12 RAT31 DL fixed air defence radar (FADR) systems with the 112th remote radar Squadron of Mortara (Pavia). The Selex Sistemi Integrati (SSI), developed RAT31-DL, is a long-range air surveillance radar system which will reportedly become the primary component of Nato's air defence. SSI will also provide the air force with two RAT31-DL/M (deployable air defence radar-DADR) mobile radar systems. FADR is the carrying structure of the programme with which AMI has started replacing its aerial surveillance systems. Replacing the systems will ensure the availability of the frequencies necessary for the introduction of the new worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WI-MAX) technology for high-speed wireless internet access in Italy. To date, nine countries have acquired the system, seven of which are Nato members.

Eurofighter delivers five Typhoon aircraft to the Italian Air Force
Hallbergmoos | With most companies on Christmas break between Christmas and New Year, it was a welcome surprise to learn that Alenia Aeronautica was busy completing their final aircraft deliveries for the year, exceeding the total planned for 2010. These last deliveries came in the form of five Eurofighter Typhoon jets that were handed over to the Italian customer on one day.
On the 28th December 2010, Eurofighter Partner Company Alenia Aeronautica signed over IS037, IS039, IS040, IS041, IT011 to the Italian Air Force, bringing the total number of deliveries for the programme in 2010 to 51 – far higher than had been predicted.
This success is yet another impressive indication of the hard work and commitment of the partner companies to meeting and exceeding customer requirements. Throughout the year, the highly skilled Typhoon staff work tirelessly to ensure that each aircraft is safely delivered on time and on schedule. A nice way to end the year.

Italian Air Force Receives 1st Tanker From Boeing
ROME - The Italian Air Force took delivery on Jan. 27 of the first of four Boeing KC767-A tanker aircraft it has acquired.
The aircraft, MM 62229, flew from Boeing's Wichita, Kan., facility to the Italian Air Force's Pratica di Mare base south of Rome for a hand-over ceremony, the Air Force said in a statement. The aircraft will now "undergo a series of tests and activities" before entering service, the statement said. "The second aircraft, which should be delivered in the coming months, is now undergoing tests at Boeing," added the statement. Boeing has previously said that the last two of the four aircraft would feature "enhanced capabilities," without giving details. The KC767-A replaces the B-707T/T tanker previously flown by the Italian Air Force. It is configured for troop and cargo transport, as well as refueling from a rear boom and three hose and drogues - one under each wing and one under the main fuselage. Three crew are required for transport flights and four for refueling missions. After first promising delivery of the tanker in 2005, Boeing's schedule slipped as it sought to fix a vibration problem with a wing pylon, and then tackle a stability problem on the centerline hose and drogue.

SOURCE:Flight International Italian air force trains in Israel By Arie Egozi
The Italian air force will continue to use facilities in Israel to train its pilots for desert combat and to defend themselves against surface-launched threats, according to Israeli sources.
With the Italian air force's continued deployment in Afghanistan, it believes Israel offers the best training for the environment it will encounter.
The Israeli air force has gained vast experience in defending its aircraft against surface-to-air threats and is now sharing this with the Italian service.
In December 2010 Italian air force Panavia Tornado fighters were deployed to the Israeli air force Uvda airbase in southern Israel.
The Tornados flew against an "enemy" Israeli Lockheed Martin F-16, but mainly trained in avoidance tactics from surface-launched threats.
Special flares were used to simulate surface-to-air missile launches to train pilots in the use of countermeasures or to perform avoidance manoeuvres.
Last year the Israeli service deployed its fighters to an Italian air force base in Sardinia for training and has previously trained with the Greek service.

Alenia Aermacchi Announces the First Flight of the Italian Air Force T-346A
The first M-346 aircraft produced for the Italian Air Force (ITAF) had a successful first flight today, yesterday 31 March 2011. The ITAF has designated the plane as the T-346A.
“The first flight of the T-346A, soon to enter service with our country’s Air Force, is an important milestone for the M-346 program, a milestone reached through the dedication of the entire work force of the Venegono plant,” said Dr. Giuseppe Giordo, CEO of Alenia Aeronautica and Head of the Finmeccanica Aeronautics Sector.
Flown by Chief Test Pilot Quirino Bucci, the aircraft took off at 4 p.m. from Venegono, the home airfield of Alenia Aermacchi, a Finmeccanica company controlled by Alenia Aeronautica. The flight lasted 40 minutes and the T-346A reached a maximum altitude of 15,000 ft., covering the planned flight envelope in terms of speed, angle of attack and load factor. The flight also included manoeuvres to assess aeromechanical handling of the aircraft and systems functionality. After landing, Captain Bucci expressed appreciation for the aircraft. “Once again, the aircraft demonstrated its excellent characteristics in terms of handling, energy and man-machine interface, all crucial points in training future pilots to fly new generation combat aircraft.”
The ITAF T-346A is the first M-346 series production aircraft completed. The Alenia Aermacchi site in Venegono now operates a leading-edge, highly-automated production line capable of delivering up to 48 aircraft per year with competitive cost and high quality in order to meet the highest program requirements.
The remaining aircraft for the Italian Air Force are already being built on this new assembly line, and production of the 12 aircraft ordered by the Singapore Air Force are also underway.
Alenia Aermacchi M-346 marketing activities are very active both in Europe and the rest of the world. Alenia North America is preparing to bid on the U.S. Air Force's T-X Trainer Replacement Program with the T-100, the U.S. variant of the M-346. The T-100 is the most modern, high performance, safe for student pilots and the lowest life cycle cost of any modern trainer aircraft on the market today.
