Belarusian T-72BM2 tank as effective as Russian T-72B3 tank
Defense News November 2022 Global Security army industry
POSTED ON THURSDAY, 03 NOVEMBER 2022 16:46
T-72B tanks, which are in service with the Belarusian army and have been upgraded to the T-72BM2 level, are as effective as the T-72B3 version operational in Russia, Belarus’ State Military Industrial Committee said.

The T-72BM2 tank (previously designated T-72BME?) is a result of the upgrade of the Soviet T-72B tank developed in the 1980s. Work to modernize the tank was carried out by specialists of the 140th Repair Plant in Borisov. The tank was unveiled at the end of July this year. “In general, the level of modernization has reached 88%, and the T-72BM2 is practically not inferior to the T-72B3 in terms of efficiency and surpasses it in some characteristics,” the committee said.
As the committee noted, the upgraded tank has received an improved control system, a Sosna-U multichannel sight, and Belarusian-made explosive reactive and slat armor. “The protected area of the T-72BM2 tank’s hull and the turret is larger than that of the T-72B3,” the committee added. Also, it was reported about the introduction of an autonomous power supply unit, ensures the operation of tank systems without starting the main engine.
In July, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin said that the task to develop a new and modern tank in the republic had been fulfilled.
On July 11, 2018, Army Recognition published that the Belarusian military was testing the T-72BME (not designated T-72BM2) upgraded tank, according to an industrial source. Belarus’s 140th Repair Plant had upgraded the T-72A main battle tank to the T-72BME level, the new upgraded tank was shown for the first time to the public during MILEX international arms exhibition in Minsk, in May 2017.

Belarus receives more TOR-M2K air defense missile systems from Russia
POSTED ON MONDAY, 16 JANUARY 2023 16:43
Six Tor-M2K air defense missile systems delivered by Russia entered service with an air defense missile brigade of the Belarusian Armed Forces, the Belarusian Defense Ministry said: “Today (January 16), servicemen of military unit 30151 [the 15th air defense missile brigade of the Belarusian Air Force and Air Defense] have received a squadron of Tor-M2K air defense missile systems. Six new unique combat vehicles, which have no world analogs, have come in service with the brigade. The new weapon has been presented to the strategically vital brigade,” it said.

“The personnel, which is going to operate and employ this weapon, has undergone special training and has experience in using the weapon, including at training ranges in Russia,” Colonel Andrei Dolbik, the commander of the brigade, which is deployed in the town of Fanipol, the Minsk Region, said in a televised interview. “This kind of weapon is not new for the personnel. A combat training plan has been adapted for the Tor air defense missile squadron. I am convinced that the system will be effectively employed,” he said.
The Belarusian Defense Ministry said late in December 2022 that it had received a new shipment of Russian Tor-M2K air defense missile systems in line with an inter-governmental agreement under the treaty on military-technical cooperation. Colonel Andrei Lukyanovich, commander of the Belarusian Air Force and Air Defense, said back then that Minsk was waiting for further delivery of Russian arms.
The TOR-M2K will replace the old Soviet-made S-300 air defense missile systems which are in service with the 15th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade. It is designed to engage a variety of aerial threats including aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles.
The Tor-M2K air defense system is an export version of the Tor M2 based on a wheeled truck chassis. The air defense system is based on the Belarusian MZKT-6922 high mobility wheeled chassis in 6x6 configuration and replaced the GM-5955 tracked chassis of the standard Tor M2. The first TOR-M2K was delivered to the Belarus army in 2013.
The Tor-M2K is fitted with the same missile launcher station such as the standard TOR-M2 mounted on tracked armored chassis. It is equipped with two 9M334 missile launcher modules, each carrying four ready-to-fire 9М9331 missiles.
The Tor-M2K is capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously. The missile has a range of up to 12 km and an altitude of up to 10 km. It can be integrated with radar and other surveillance systems to provide a comprehensive air defense solution.

Field tests with live firing of the modernized 9A33-2B combat vehicle of the Osa SAM system have been completed. This was reported by the State Authority for Military Industry. During the tests, the air target was hit by the first missile, which confirmed the declared technical characteristics of the vehicle.
The modernization of the Osa SAM is being carried out at the 2566th radio-electronic weapons repair plant in Barysau. It applied to the main systems of the combat vehicle, which made it possible to significantly improve its combat and operational characteristics. During modernization, 70% of the standard equipment was converted to digital format. The layout of radio-electronic equipment was also changed.
As a result of modernization: • the range of target detection was increased; • accuracy of target coordinates determination and interference protection of the equipment were increased; • the processes of topography and orientation became automated.
The modernized 9A33-2B combat vehicle was transferred to a new chassis: from standard BAZ-5937 to MAZ-6317. In addition to the combat vehicle, the transport loading vehicle was also transferred to the MAZ chassis.
In October 2023, it was reported that they began to produce the 9A33-2B combat vehicle. There was no information about when the equipment would be delivered to the troops. We may assume that the modernized SAM system will enter service with the air defense units of the Southern Operational Command of the Belarusian Armed Forces.
The Osa SAM system is in service with the air defense units of the Belarusian Armed Forces. Each operational command of the Ground Forces has an anti-aircraft missile regiment (the 147th in Babruisk, military unit 96869, and the 740th in Barysau, military unit 15847) armed with the Osa SAM system. As of 2016, the Belarusian Armed Forces had six divizion sets of SAM systems.
