Portuguese Air Force´s AW101 Fleet Achieves 10,000 Flying Hours
July 13, 2010 by Marcel van Leeuwen · Leave a Comment
AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, congratulates the Portuguese Air Force (PoAF) on achieving the milestone of 10,000 flying hours with its AW101 medium/heavy three engine helicopter fleet whilst performing search and rescue and fishery protection duties. This achievement was celebrated last Friday at Montijo Air Base, where the Portuguese AW101 fleet is based. General Araújo, the Portuguese Air Force’s Chief of Staff, presided over the ceremony in which AgustaWestland, Senior Vice President of International Government Business, Giacomo Saponaro, awarded certificates of achievement to the most experienced pilots and technicians. Since the delivery of the first of twelve AW101s to the Portuguese Air Force in late 2004, these aircraft dedicated to SAR, Combat SAR and fishery protection roles have performed hundreds of SAR missions saving more than 630 lives. With the largest SAR area of responsibility of any European country the long range and endurance of the AW101 has provided new levels of SAR capability over a large area of the Atlantic Ocean operating from bases on the mainland, Lajes in the Azores and Madeira. The fishery protection variant is equipped with a cabin mission console allowing the operator to control the 360 degree scan radar, Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) camera and the communications suite. In 2008 AgustaWestland signed a 15 years contract with Locação de Equipamentos de Defesa SA (DEFLOC) for the long term provision of support for the 12 AW101 helicopters operated by the Portuguese Air Force. Under the Full In Service Support (FISS) contract AgustaWestland has taken full responsibility for the second level maintenance of the aircraft as well as the provision of spares, repairs and technical support services. The implementation of FISS has seen flying rates increase and the support services improved to meet the customer’s requirements. The Portuguese Air Force has performed several long range rescues that could only be performed by the AW101 due to its range and endurance capabilities. Additionally Portuguese Air Force AW101s have worked in co-operation with Spanish authorities to conduct several demanding rescues. Over 180 AW101 helicopters have been ordered by customers around the world to perform a wide range of government, public service and military missions. The AW101 has logged well over 200,000 flight hours in service in Portugal, Italy, UK, Denmark, Japan and Canada whilst delivering exceptional performance and high levels of safety. Portuguese Navy Acquires SeeByte’s SeeTrack Military for Use with GAVIA
Edinburgh, Scotland | SeeByte, the global leader in creating smart software for unmanned underwater vehicles, announces the sale of SeeTrack Military to the Portuguese Navy. The Portuguese Navy acquired SeeByte’s leading SeeTrack Military software in order to plan, monitor, analyse and report on their GAVIA Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) operations.
“We here at SeeByte are proud to include the Portuguese Navy as one of our esteemed customers. We look forward to working closely with their Mine-counter Measures units and helping them make best use of SeeTrack Military as they carry out their important missions. SeeTrack military was designed to operate with multiple assets including diver hand-held systems, marine mammals, towed side-scan and all existing types of AUVs. ” said Ioseba Tena SeeByte’s Sales Manager.
Lieutenant Commander Carlos Afonso (Head of PO Navy MW Department) stated: “SeeTrack Military is more than just mosaics. It is a software that allows us to run our AUV operations, supporting all the mission life-cycle Planning, Execution, Analysis and Data Dissemination. Importantly, the SeeByte software provides functionalities not easy to find as an all-in-one software; the output products coming from SeeTrack increase the interoperability of our MCM Teams with MCM International Community. Our GAVIA systems are currently unique in the international MCM community and with SeeTrack Military we are able to deliver outputs useful to the wider NATO community.”
SeeTrack Military has become the de facto standard smart technology for the worldwide defence market. Showcased in a multitude of military situations, this product is currently used by Navy teams in missions to search identify and recover man-made underwater objects and to enhance the capabilities of their remote vehicles, marine mammals and divers. As a result, our customers are saving time, money and valuable man-hours while reducing unnecessary risk for the human operators who eventually have to interface with the underwater objects.

Helitech Portugal: Questions linger over Portuguese SAR helicopters
October 06, 2010
Members of the Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa or FAP) have expressed frustration with the availability of the service’s EH101 Merlin SAR helicopters.
At the Helitech exhibition in Portugal on 5-7 October, the FAP prominently displayed one of the 12 EH101 Merlins it has ordered from AgustaWestland in December 2001.
Since the first aircraft arrived, the Merlins have carried out more than 10,000 flight hours and saved the lives of more than 650 people, playing a key role in the country's ability to provide SAR across a vast region of the Atlantic Ocean.
Portugal is second only to Canada in terms of the area it has to provide SAR coverage for, with helicopters based on the mainland at Montijo near the capital, Lisbon, as well as at Porto Santo, 45km north-east of Madeira, and in the Azores.
However, the availability of these aircraft has been a sore subject for FAP commanders. While this has improved with extra support from AgustaWestland's newly-established Portuguese subsidiary and a full in service support (FISS) contract, availability levels are understood to remain below what has been expected.
One pilot told Rotorhub.com: 'This is a new aircraft – we were told when they were purchased they would need four times less maintenance than the Puma, but sometimes they need four times more.'
At the beginning of the week of Helitech, six out of the 12 aircraft were available for flying.
The issues have forced the retention of some of the FAP's SAR Pumas, which marked 40 years of service last October – although it has been suggested these may finally exit service with 752 Squadron by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, both AgustaWestland and Eurocopter are waiting on a Portuguese government decision to replace the increasingly elderly Alouette III helicopters, in service with the FAP for basic training, liaison and other duties, but it could be a waiting game given the reported state of the country's economy and finances.
AgustaWestland believes its AW109 LUH offers the best solution, especially as Portugal has also ordered the NH90. Several other nations, such as New Zealand and Sweden, have ordered the two types together with the LUH configuration of modern avionics and wheeled landing gear proving to be a good training machine for the NH90.
Eurocopter feels its EC635, the military variant of the EC135, could also be the aircraft for the role.
The Portuguese Army had actually ordered nine of the latter for the fire support and medevac role, but cancelled them in 2002 and the aircraft were later delivered to Jordan.
Currently the army does not have any aircraft but has 10 NH90 TTHs on order. The fuselage of the first Portuguese aircraft was unveiled in Italy by AgustaWestland in September with the first aircraft due to arrive in 2012.
As it currently stands, the Portuguese Army has only a handful of pilots trained by the FAP and faces a huge challenge not only in preparing crews in a short space of time, but preparing them to fly an extremely advanced fly-by-wire machine without a modern type with which to train them.
If moving from the Alouette to the Merlin is 'having to learn to fly all over again' then a similar experience is likely with the NH90 as well.

12 October 2010
The Portuguese Air Force has taken delivery of the first of five upgraded P-3C CUP+ standard Orions.
October 12: The Portuguese Air Force has taken delivery of the first of five upgraded P-3C CUP+ standard Orions purchased from the Royal Netherlands Navy in February 2005.
Lockheed Martin Tactical Systems undertook the work on the first two aircraft through a €99 million contract awarded by the Portuguese Ministry of Defence. The other three aircraft will be upgraded by Portuguese industry and will be delivered by 2012.
The Orions will be used in the maritime surveillance role by Esquadra 601 of the Portuguese Air Force at Beja Air Base and will replace six P-3P aircraft purchased from the Royal Australian Air Force in 1985 and brought into operation in 1988.
