The Italian Air Force and the Israel Air Force completed a joint training exercise in Israel introducing Italian pilots to new terrain and using certain aircrafts for the first time
The week of Dec. 5th, the Israel Air Force and the Italian Air Force held a number of joint training exercises in Israel. For the first time, the Italian Air Force flew its Panavia Tornado aircraft to the Ovda IAF base and carried out training flights with the Flying Dragon IAF Squadron.
The Flying Dragon Squadron does advanced training in the IAF, specializing in training exercises in which they simulate a red, or enemy, force.
This combined training exercise follows a combined training exercise held two weeks ago in Sardinia, in which IAF combat squadrons and transport squadrons also took part.
The training included flights in desert terrain new to pilots of the Aeronautica Militare.
The exercise was conducted according to a preplanned, yearly training schedule and is part of a series of combined exercises between IDF forces and other militaries from around the world. IDF.IL

Israeli Navy Reveals Details of New Underwater Missions Unit
The Israel Navy has unveiled details of its new underwater missions unit, which is designed to conduct sabotage and reconnaissance operations. Unit commander Major Oren said the unit is responsible for clearing naval mines and searching for remains of soldiers lost at sea, and that it has also been battling Palestinian fighters from the Gaza Strip. "We are a small unit, one that is not very well known, but one that is extremely significant in wartime," he said. "If our enemies plant the water with mines, we have to clean it up. We participate every year in more than 100 experiments below sea level." The unit participated in an operation that involved locating Katyusha-class rockets fired from Egypt towards Israel in April 2010 and found a Grad BM-21 rocket that landed in the Gulf of Eilat. In 2010 the unit conducted an exercise, which included foreign naval personnel, to provide supplies to a submarine dozens of metres below the surface, according to The World Tribune. The unit was trained to repair the hull of ships while in the water and has helped inspect and repair vessels such as the missile boat NS Lahav.

Les F-15I sont qualifiés sur GBU-39.
Citation :
Israel's F-15Is get small diameter bombs By Arie Egozi The Israeli air force has armed its Boeing F-15Is with the US manufacturer's small diameter bomb (SDB).
The precision-guided weapon comes in two variants: the 113kg (250lb) GBU-39, which uses inertial navigation and GPS guidance to strike fixed and stationary targets, and the GBU-40. The latter is equipped with a terminal seeker with automatic target recognition capabilities for use against moving targets.
The F-15I is the first Israeli type to field the SDB, with the air force expecting the combination to achieve initial operational capability by mid-2011. The service is currently evaluating whether to also equip its Lockheed Martin F-16s with the weapons.
The SDB's dimensions and accuracy mean combat aircraft can carry more bombs and strike more targets on and individual sortie. Lessons from the war in Lebanon and fighting in the Gaza Strip have prompted the Israeli air force to seek smaller bombs to reduce collateral damage.

Israel Inaugurates First Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) Battalion
The Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) first NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) Defense Battalion was officially established on Tuesday (Dec. 12). The battalion was created out of the previous "Yanshuf" unit, which specialized in NBC warfare and has been around for many years. It will now be officially recognized as a regular combat battalion.
The battalion’s inauguration ceremony took place during the course of its first regimented drill, which took place the week of Tuesday. As part of the drill, companies practiced finding chemical substances in both urban and rural area, even working with elite unit from the Combat Engineering Corps,Yahalom.
Commander of Army Headquarters, Maj. Gen. Sami Turgeman, wished the soldiers happy tidings for two reasons - both for the inauguration of the battalion and for Hanukkah. "We're located in the southern Golan Heights, not far from us the Syrians are diligently developing warring capabilities we must prepare for," said Maj. Gen. Turgeman. "Our job is not to prepare for conventional occurrences, but rather to prepare for the extreme event, and the ‘Yanshuf’ Battalion is the spearhead for this defense. You have been given great responsibility. A very professional unit with great combat spirit is being developed here."
Head of the military's NBC Center, Col. Ari Hoze, has dreamed of this moment for many years. "There is one official NBC battalion serving as a compass for the rest of the army and now our responsibility is to prove ourselves. In 2009, we completed a two-year period of continuous operational activity in the southern border. Due to our unique steadfastness, the battalion withstood professional challenges and sustained a high moral."
Col. Hoze spoke about changes made over the past year as a result of the unit becoming a battalion. "Efforts to extend the NBC combat’s course began, company commanders now go through a course with the rest of the infantry units. All this thanks to the GOC Army Headquarters’ recognition of the unit and its importance."
Lt. Col. Ofir Ben David, "Yanshuf" Battalion commander, could not conceal his excitement. "We, the commanders and fighters of the unit, were given the opportunity to be part of this innovative process, during which we are designing the battalion's genetic code. Being a pioneer is not only a privilege but also a big responsibility, especially since we are the only regular army NBC battalion responsible for preparing all NBC arrangements in the ground forces."

Israeli Trophy Active Defence System Tested in Military Exercises
A Merkava MBT fitted with the Trophy anti-missile protection system. Trophy another step closer to introduction by Israeli armoured divisions defpro.com
| As the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recently announced, the Tropy active defece system for armoured vehicles has again been successfully tested during an exercise of the Israeli Army. Jointly developed by Rafael, Elta and the US company General Dynamics, Trophy is primarily designed for the protection of the Israeli-built Merkava 4 main battle tank (MBT) against threats such as anti-tank rockets and missiles.
Providing active protection against incoming threats, the Trophy system (designated Windbreaker or ‘Meil Ruach’ by the IDF) uses sensors to detect threats and counters them by firing a special charge. Trophy has been designed to simultaneously detect and engage threats approaching the vehicle from different directions. Despite offering an all-round close-range protection, Trophy is designed as a supplement to the vehicle’s passive armour.
The system has recently been involved in a regimental exercise by the Israeli Army’s 401st Brigade, after having already been thoroughly tested in controlled environments by industry and the armed forces. Since it was first presented in 2005, Trophy entered series-production in 2007 and is now in the process of being introduced into service by IDF armoured divisions. The decision to equip Israel’s Merkava 4 MBTs with the Trophy system was announced by the Ministry of Defence in August 2009.
According to UPI the Israeli Army leadership strongly advocated for the system’s introduction after 22 Merkavas were damaged by Russian Kornet anti-tank guided missiles during the war with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon in the summer of 2006.
The recent exercise, conducted by the 9th Battalion of the Armoured Corps, took place in the Golan Heights, the long-disputed area in northern Israel. The deputy commander of the 401st Brigade, Lt.Col. Haim Ido, said: “Thanks to Windbreaker we have the ability to fight more effectively, faster and more securely than ever before.” Referring to Trophy as well as to other military equipment tested during the exercise, an Israeli officer said: “The issue of absorbing new technological capabilities in the tank division is gaining significant momentum. We must learn to use them more effectively in the exercises we perform.”
On October 12th, Trophy saw its first demonstration during a ten-day IDF joint combat exercise at the Shizafon base in southern Israel. The event was attended by top Israeli military leaders, including the IDF Chief of the General Staff, Lt.Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Maj.Gen. Benny Gantz, and the Chief of the Ground Forces, Maj.Gen. Sami Turgeman. As during the recent exercise, the active defence system was displayed on a Merkava Mark 4 main battle tank. The system’s performance was demonstrated by eliminating a dummy missile which was fired at the tank.
Anticipating the system’s introduction with the entire battalion as soon as Trophy is fully operational, Sergeant Nico Gabay, a gunner in the 9th Battalion, summarised the experiences made during the recent exercise: “This is something important and innovative. Of course there were several glitches, but they were not critical. It is apparent from the training scenarios is a very useful system that will protect the tank.”

Israel's three major manufacturers of unmanned air vehicles have each submitted proposals in a bid to meet the future requirements of the Chilean air force.
Two Aeronautics Defense Systems Aerostar UAVs were flown by Israeli crews in Chile last March over areas recovering from an earthquake. The nation's air force then asked several manufacturers to submit proposals for operational systems.
Among the Israeli bidders, Aeronautics is offering its Aerostar C, while sources suggest that Elbit Systems is promoting its Hermes 450 and may also offer its larger Hermes 900 design. Israel Aerospace Industries is also pitching its Heron system.
Chile in 1993 acquired one Boeing 707 Condor surveillance aircraft equipped with a Phalcon airborne early warning radar supplied by IAI's Elta Systems subsidiary.
Officials from the nation's air force have recently visited the three Israeli companies vying for its potential UAV order and received briefings about their respective designs.

The Israeli air force yesterday shot down what seems to have been a balloon that flew over the country's secretive Dimona nuclear reactor site An army spokeswoman confirmed an object, "probably a balloon", was shot down after being detected in the area of the southern Dead Sea, which is near the reactor.
There were reports the military was checking if the object was on a photographic mission of the installation. Some reports said the balloon had a motor.
Israel's Negev Nuclear Research Centre, which is closed to international inspection and where Israel is believed to have built more than 200 nuclear weapons, is located about ten miles south-east of the town of Dimona.
Construction on the Dimona reactor began in 1958, and it became operational in 1963. Israel enforces a strict airspace quarantine in the area of the facility as they consider the desert reactor a prime target for attack by its enemies.
In October 2009 IAF fighter jets were scrambled to escort an ultralight plane that veered off the permitted flight zone near the Dimona nuclear research center and got too close to the sensitive site. The jets forced the plane to land near Arad.
During the 1967 Middle East war, an Israeli surface-to-air missile downed a crippled Israeli fighter-bomber that strayed into the restricted zone. Its pilot was killed.
In yesterday's incident, it was decided to down the object with a missile fired by an F-16 after it became clear it was unmanned and the reason for its presence was uncertain.
Air space in the Arava area was closed during the incident, and all flights between Tel Aviv and Eilat were halted. After the balloon was shot down and verified that it was no threat, flights were resumed. Search parties are currently scouring the area where the balloon fell to verify exactly what it was.

IAI continues to evaluate G550 for air refuelling
Israel Aerospace Industries may still adapt the Gulfstream G550 for use in air refuelling, even though the company has rejected the aircraft as a main tanker platform.
The large-cabin, ultra-long-range business jet is seen as a potential "complementary platform", or could be used to train pilots in air refuelling. The renewed interest comes after IAI Bedek Group concluded that the G550 is not attractive as a main refuelling platform, a company source reports.
Meanwhile, Bedek Group is focusing its air refuelling marketing strategy on the Boeing 767. The company delivered a 767-300 to the Colombian air force in November, which it converted to an aerial tanker. The aircraft had been purchased by IAI and equipped with a drogue and hose aerial refuelling system.

Israel and South Korea could strengthen defence links
Increased Israeli-South Korean co-operation is on the cards as the Asian nation seeks to develop its indigenous defence and aerospace industries.
Although South Korea has traditionally bought most of its major items of military hardware from the USA, Israeli industry leaders believe that Seoul is seeking new avenues for product development.
This assessment follows talks with representatives of South Korean companies who have visited Israel in recent months. They believe there is great potential to use Israeli technology in military platforms already in production in their own country.
Rafael's vice-president for marketing Lova Drori says there are signs South Korea is making a focused effort to increase its abilities to develop indigenous defence systems.
There are pre-existing defence links between the two nations. South Korea has bought Israel Aerospace Industries' Harpy loitering anti-radar unmanned air vehicle and its Green Pine phased-array long-range radar that was developed as part of Israel's Arrow anti-tactical ballistic missile system.
Korea Aerospace Industries, meanwhile, is offering its T-50 supersonic advanced trainer as a replacement for the Israeli defence forces' McDonnell Douglas A-4 Skyhawks. Israel Aerospace Industries and Elbit Systems have formed a joint venture to assemble whichever aircraft is chosen to meet the requirement and equip it with locally made systems.

IAF Eyes New Training Aircraft
The Israeli Air Force (IAF) has requested information Korean and Italian aerospace companies on new training aircraft for use by pilot school cadets before advancing to combat jets training. The IAF has replaced the ground-attack aircraft Skyhawk with Italy's Alenia Aermacchi M-346 transonic trainer aircraft and the Korean Aerospace Industries supersonic advanced trainer and multirole fighter T-50 Golden Eagle. The T-50 is South Korea's first indigenous supersonic aircraft and one of the world's few supersonic trainers. The T-50 programme was intended to develop an indigenous trainer aircraft capable of supersonic flight and to train and prepare pilots for the KF-16 and F-15K, replacing trainers such as T-38 and A-37. The Israeli Air Force found the T-50 impressive because of its similarity to the F-16 fighter jet, the Jerusalem Post reports quoting an Israeli Air Force officer.
