Fighter-jet engines 'stolen from Israeli base'

Israel's military police on Monday opened an inquiry into the theft of airplane parts, a spokeswoman said without confirming press reports that eight fighter-jet engines had been stolen.
"The military police have opened an inquiry into the matter," she told AFP without giving further detail or confirming reports of the theft from Tel Nof airbase near Tel Aviv.
Air force officials quoted in the Maariv newspaper said the stolen parts were eight engines from F-15 and F-16 fighter jets which were taken from Tel Nof air base.
They said it was not immediately clear when the theft took place, but said the parts were no longer in use and had most likely been stolen for their value as scrap metal, the paper said.
Investigators quoted by the paper said each engine weighed "several tonnes" and could only have been taken away on large trucks, prompting speculation that the thieves had help from inside the base.
Military officials quoted by Israel HaYom newspaper described the theft as "very serious."

Israel steps up interest in V-22 Osprey

Israeli air force pilots and technical experts will soon meet US Marine Corps staff to hear their opinion about the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor that is now being used in Afghanistan.

The planned meeting represents a further step in Israel's renewed evaluation of the V-22, as reported by Flightglobal in March. This is intended to determine whether the tiltrotor should be included in the new multi-year plan of the Israeli defence forces.

Israel's interest in the V-22 stems from the type's ability to rapidly deploy Special Forces personnel, and to meet other urgent mission requirements, such as performing medical evacuation missions, according to Israeli sources.

Air force interest in the high-speed rotorcraft dates to 2007.

Elbit tests new mobile control unit for Skylark drone

New mobile control system will increase operational efficiency for forces operating in the field

Earlier this month, Elbit Systems completed a series of successful tests on its Skylark I-LE unmanned aerial drone using the Dominator command and control system. The system will allow infantry forces to operate the mini-drone with maximum operational efficiency.

Skylark drones are operational in the IDF and in several foreign militaries. The drones have seen battlefield action in several war zones, including Iraq and Afghanistan.

The new mobile control unit is an answer to the realities that forces face on modern battlefields. The mobile operating unit's light weight and small size allows forces to carry out complex missions with increased operational flexibility. The new mobile control unit is 15 kilograms lighter than the existing control system and includes a computer, a hand-held display, a joystick and a Skylark Rambo transducer. For more sensitive missions and for missions requiring greater mobility, an eyepiece can be used instead of the hand-held display.

The Skylark drone is designed to gather intelligence for "over the next hill" missions. The drone is exceptionally quiet and possesses excellent observation capabilities both during the day and at night.

The Dominator system was designed for the unit level and the individual soldier, giving forces the ability to control the battlefield by increasing situational awareness and the ability to transmit information. Forces can send and receive critical data in real-time, view updated intelligence on individual screens and watch video being transmitted from various sensors in the field or from soldiers. With the system, information and pictures can be sent to the command post or to other forces in the field.

Iron Dome heads north

One anti-missile system battery deployed in Haifa as part of testing process. Batteries slated to be installed in various other locations including in Central Israel

The Iron Dome anti-missile has reached the Haifa region as part of its operational testing process.

Its deployment in Haifa is meant to test the battery's various systems and the connection between the radar and interception devices.

Two Iron Dome batteries were deployed in various points in Israel's south following mounting tensions on the Gaza border, including in Beersheba, Ashdod and Sderot.
Military elements said that the IDF continues to test various operational aspects on all sectors to achieve maximum readiness in states of emergency.

According to plans, Iron Dome batteries will be deployed in other locations including in Central Israel. The Air Force is due to receive a third battery in the coming months, and a fourth is expected within two years.

The system's main advantage is its portability and can be moved from one sector to another within hours.

The IDF Spokesman's Unit said: "The Iron Dome continues its introduction process. The battery's location was decided by the relevant elements, according to a status evaluation and the changing security state."

Team goes to US to tailor F-35s for IAF

By YAAKOV KATZ

Officers to work together with Pentagon, Lockheed Martin on issues involving integration of Israeli technology into F-35 Joint Strike Fighters.

The Israel Air Force has sent two servicemen to the United States to serve as the lead technical team in the development of the Israeli version of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Military sources said the two officers would work together with the Pentagon and F-35 manufacturer Lockheed Martin on issues involving the integration of Israeli technology into the fifth-generation stealth fighter jet.

Last year, Israel signed a $2.75 billion deal to buy 20 fifth-generation stealth Joint Strike Fighters. Under the original deal, Israel was to begin receiving the planes in 2015; but due to development delays, delivery will likely now begin in 2016 or 2017.

As a result, the IAF is hoping to obtain Pentagon approval for IAF pilots to begin training in the US as early as 2016, around the time American pilots will begin training on the advanced fighter jet.

The F-35’s uniqueness stems not only from its stealth capabilities but also due to its integrated sensor suite, which provides pilots with unprecedented situational awareness and enables the sharing of information between the various aircraft.

RADA's Radar for Active Protection Systems Successfully Completes Tests

Israel Military Industries "Iron Fist" Which Incorporates RADA Developed Radar Completed Evaluation Trials Conducted by the US Office of Secretary of Defense

RADA Electronic Industries Ltd. announced that "Iron Fist," an active protection system (APS) for armored vehicles, developed by the Israel Military Industries (IMI) and for which RADA developed the radar, successfully completed trials conducted by the US Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD). This trial was part of a congressionally mandated evaluation of domestic and foreign APS.

Iron Fist is designed to handle a wide range of threats to tanks including Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) as well as armor piercing kinetic energy projectiles. RADA designed the radar for this system for threat detection, situational awareness and fire control. When the system detects an impending threat, it disrupts it by operating countermeasures (in case of ATGM) or actively intercepts and destroys the threat before it hits the target.

The trial required that the Iron Fist be integrated onto a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle (MRAP) and was conducted in two phases, which included "soft kill" or countermeasures tests, as well as "hard kill" or active interception tests. Following the tests Iron Fist demonstrated full interception of armor piercing kinetic energy projectiles. Iron Fist demonstrated the required performance capabilities for each phase.

Zvika Alon, RADA CEO, commented: "We were very pleased witness Iron Fist successfully complete the testing conducted by the US OSD. This achievement will serve as an important step in our continued development of radar systems as well as other applications we have developed in the area of radar systems for threat detection and warning."

Rolling Eyes

Israeli Air Force looks at MV-22 capabilities

7/6/2011 By MCAS New River Public AffairsOffice, Marine Corps Air Station New River

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. (July 6, 2011) — For the second time in two months, a team from the Israeli Air Force visited 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing units at Marine Corps Air Station New River to evaluate the Marine Corps' MV-22 Osprey, and aircraft that the Israelis, according to some reports, see as a possible platform for search and rescue operations, and for covert special operations.

The first IAF visit, May 16-26, was conducted by Lt. Col. Nimrod Golan, a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter pilot, and Lt. Col. Avi Carmeli, a CH-53 Sea Stallion helicopter pilot and Navy graduate test pilot, both with the Israeli Air Force. That was followed June 13-23 by a seven-man team led by Golan and Carmeli.
"An invitation came from the Marines to the Israeli Air Force to explore this aircraft and though currently, there is no procurement process on the table, we were very happy to follow this invitation," said Golan. "We are looking at the aircraft, trying to understand how the Osprey can contribute to our operational requirements and also have an understanding of its implementation. In addition, this is a great opportunity to enhance our relationship and cooperation with the Marines."
The Israeli pilots spent their first visit with Marines of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204 gaining an overall familiarization of the Osprey and examining its capabilities related to reducing the risks to pilots, aircrews and passengers on the battlefield. The overall intent of the visit was to learn about MV-22 systems and performance, and to become "well oriented" with the aircraft.
"In order to be prepared for our June visit, we had to get some basic knowledge and basic skills, which is what '204 gave us," said Golan. "We were exposed for the first time to this technology called tiltrotor, and not just exposed academically ... it was an amazing experience."
Their second visit, with Marine Tiltrotor Test and Evaluation Squadron 22 and Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 365, "... was the core of the whole evaluation process," said Golan, as the Israelis looked more deeply into the aircraft's capabilities and maintenance process. "We conducted a variety of flights in order to operationally evaluate the aircraft. We got the tools the last time we were here," said Golan. "Now we are flying to learn to operate."
After spending time in simulators, the visitors experienced the full capabilities of the aircraft with training flights that included familiarization, tactical approaches, confined area landings, low altitude tactics, formations and night flights with the goal of assessing the aircraft's potential value to the IAF. With only 10 hours of MV-22 flight time, one of the visiting CH-53 pilots, flying a VMM-365 Osprey, conducted aerial refueling with a KC-130J from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252, where he was rated as "on par with any other transition pilot."
Perhaps most importantly, the visiting pilots experienced the MV-22's trademark features of speed, range and maneuverability - proven advantages over the helicopters that the Osprey has replaced. They learned, first hand, how the Osprey can keep its crews and passengers above the threat of ground fire during flight, and how its maneuverability, particularly its ability to rapidly accelerate and decelerate, reduces exposure to threats during approach and departure. As 2nd MAW Commanding General Maj. Gen. Jon Davis has been known to say, "By the time the bad guys know you're there, you're already gone.
As with any military personnel exchange, other benefits were realized. Both visits were a learning experience for the seasoned Israeli pilots on how U.S. Marines operate, and for the Marines who worked with them.
"We are not too different from each other, we think the same and understand each other very well," said Carmeli.
"We came to agree on most topics and how to accomplish the missions." Golan added, "The Marines did a marvelous job with their hospitality and professionalism, it took a lot of effort and they are very good people here."

IAF mulls missile defense system for helicopters

Proposal comes in face of growing surface-to-air missile threat against IAF aircraft from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

Talkbacks (1)
The air force is looking into installing an active protection system aboard its helicopters that would intercept enemy missiles, similar to a system recently proven in combat on IDF tanks.

The proposal comes in face of the growing surface-to-air missile threat against IAF aircraft from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

The requirement for such a system was recently issued by the IAF’s Helicopter Air Directorate in light of the success of the Trophy active protection system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which intercepted a rocket-propelled grenade fired at a Merkava Mk 4 tank deployed along the border with the Gaza Strip in March.

The Trophy system, which weighs 800 kg, would not be appropriate for helicopters since it fires off a cloud of countermeasures that could damage the aircraft’s rotor. The Trophy consists of radar that detects threats and activates one of two launchers, which discharges a cloud of “hard-kill” countermeasures that physically attack incoming threats.

“We are looking into a hard-kill system for helicopters that would

Israel to issue trainer request by early August

A request for proposals for the selection of an advanced jet trainer for the Israeli air force is expected to be released no later than the first week of August.

Israel Defense Forces has started discussions over its next five-year procurement plan, and a source said that once the trainer selection gets a "line in the budget book" the RFP will be issued.

The RFP will be issued by Tor, a joint venture formed by Elbit Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries. This will purchase the selected aircraft and sell flight hours on the type to the air force.

On 14 July, Israeli sources said the demand from two rivals - the Alenia Aermacchi M-346 and the Korea Aerospace Industries/Lockheed Martin T-50 - would allow the funding of 40% of the selected aircraft using the US Foreign Military Funding (FMF) mechanism.

This is possible because the engines and some other systems for both aircraft are sourced from US industry. The Israeli defence ministry will acquire such equipment as so-called "government-furnished equipment".

The use of the FMF mechanism will also ease the direct burden on Elbit and IAI in acquiring the new fleet of aircraft.

South Korean sources said KAI has recently made efforts to match the price of its T-50 with that of the M-346.

The RFP will be answered by the two manufacturers by November, with a selection expected in March 2012.

IDF F-16 grazes a tree during landing

July 15, 2011 (by Asif Shamim)
Israel Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Ido Nechushtan ordered the temporary suspension of all training flights after an F-16 nearly crashed during a landing approach at Ramat David Air Base.

Armée Israélienne / Israel Defense Forces (IDF) - Page 16 Main.php?g2_view=core
The jet believed to be single-seat F-16 "Barak" grazed the top of a tree top during landing. The pilot felt the hit, climbed, circled the base and safely landed the plane on the second attempt. Technical crews said the jet sustained only minor damage and will return to service.

Nechushtan immediately called a halt to all training flights in the wake of the incident, and ordered a investigation into its circumstances. The IAF will hold discussions and seminars to discuss safety issues with pilots.

The F-16, which comprises the backbone of the IAF's fighter squadrons, has been involved in two fatal accidents in the past two years.

IDF eyes faster processing of spy-satellite footage

The IAF is hoping that with a new processing system it will be able to interpret footage faster, and possibly even more accurately.

Talkbacks ()

In an effort to improve its intelligence capabilities, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) is looking to develop technology that will automatically process, analyze and catalog footage taken from the country’s spy satellites.

Israel currently operates the Ofek 9, Ofek 7 and the Ofek 5 reconnaissance satellites, as well as the advanced TecSar satellite, which is one of a handful in the world that uses advanced radar technology instead of a camera enabling it to take pictures at night, and in bad weather. The IDF also receives services from two commercially- owned satellites, known as Eros A and Eros B.

Currently, the IAF trains soldiers to read and interpret satellite footage, which is used in many cases to track military buildup in enemy countries – as well as the transfer of weaponry and their location.

If, for example, a satellite detects a missile launcher in the Gaza Strip or southern Lebanon, it is then filed into a bank of targets that could be used in a future conflict.

Due to the increase in reconnaissance satellites – as well as their contribution to Israeli intelligence-gathering efforts, and the increase in productivity – the IAF is hoping that with a new processing system it will be able to interpret footage faster, and possibly even more accurately.

“Today, almost all of the processing is done by soldiers and we want it to be done quicker with a new system,” a senior officer explained.

The IAF has reached out to local industries such as Elbit Systems, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for assistance in developing the new program.

Last year, the IAF introduced a new mission- planning system to enable automated control over its seven spy satellites.

The Multi-Satellite Planning System, as it is called, was developed by Elbit Systems and is used by the Military Intelligence unit, which is responsible for controlling Israel’s satellites and determining their reconnaissance and surveillance missions.

The new program enabled soldiers to insert missions into the system, which then chooses the closest satellite, and depending on weather conditions, the one that is suitable for the specific mission.

Israel operates two types of satellites in space: electro-optic satellites, which use a high-resolution camera to take pictures of targets of interest; and SAR satellites, which use radar systems to create high-resolution images in all weather conditions, even through clouds and fog.

IAF to seek 2nd squadron of F-35s in new multi-year plan

Fighter jet purported to be one of most advanced jets in world with ability to fly undetected in enemy territory; IAF pilots to train in US.

Talkbacks (19)

The Israel Air Force plans to purchase a second squadron of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters during the upcoming IDF multi-year procurement plan that is currently under review within the General Staff.

Last October, Israel purchased its first squadron of 20 F-35s in a $2.75 billion deal. The aircraft are manufactured by Lockheed Martin and are expected to begin arriving in Israel in late 2016- early 2017.

The fifth-generation stealth F-35 is purported to be one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world with the ability to fly undetected in enemy territory. Its uniqueness stems not only from its stealth capabilities but also due to its integrated sensor suite which provides pilots with unprecedented situational awareness and enables the sharing of information between the various aircraft.

The second contract would likely be of a similar number of aircraft and could mean – depending on when the second deal is signed – that the IAF could have 40 operational aircraft by the end of the decade.

The requirement for new aircraft is underscored by developments in the region and particularly the military buildup in the region. Last week, for example, Iraq announced plans to purchase 36 F-16 fighter jets from the United States, a decision that raised eyebrows in Israel.

The IAF plans to start sending pilots to the US in 2016 to begin training on the F-35 together with American pilots who will by then have received the aircraft. This way, when the planes are delivered to Israel later that year or in the beginning of 2017, the IAF will be able to use them fairly quickly in operations.

The IAF recently dispatched two officers to the US where they are working together with the Pentagon on configuring the F-35 for Israel. The officers will work together with the Pentagon and Lockheed Martin on issues involving the integration of Israeli technology into the fighter jet.

IAF officers said on Sunday that they did not anticipate that the delivery date for the F-35 would slip beyond 2017. If it did, the IAF will need to consider purchasing a gap filler for the period. In the past, the IAF had considered purchasing additional F-15s to fill the gap that would be created in the event that the JSF program is further delayed

In related news, the IDF General Staff recently approved a new operational doctrine for how to jointly operate its growing number of missile defense systems in a future conflict when Israeli airspace will be crowded with aircraft, enemy missiles and interceptors.

Under the new doctrine, the IAF has regulated specific flight areas and altitudes for aircraft and has developed new command-and-control systems which fuse data obtained from ground and airborne sensors to provide missile defense operators with an accurate picture of Israel’s skies.

Israel currently operates the Iron Dome counter-rocket system designed to intercept short-range rockets and the Arrow-2 missile defense system designed to protect Israel from long-range ballistic missiles. Under development are the David’s Sling for medium-range missiles and the Arrow-3 which will serve as Israel’s upper tier defense system.

IDF unveils special guided missile used in Lebanon, Gaza

Tamuz missile based on Spike Long-Range Missile developed by Rafael, operated by elite Meitar unit in IDF Artillery Corps.

For years, Israel has been rumored to have secret missiles, but on Monday, for the first time, the IDF unveiled a special guided missile system that has seen successful action in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

Called Tamuz, the missile is based on the Spike Long-Range Missile developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and is operated by Meitar, an elite unit that operates under the Artillery Corps. The missile was opened to foreign exports a number of years ago.

The missile has a range of 25 km. and can penetrate armored vehicles. It can come with a different anti-personnel warhead. The missile is launched from an armored personnel carrier from two launchers, each of which is capable of carrying three missiles. The APC can carry an additional four missiles inside.

The Tamuz uses an advanced electro-optic camera that transmits the image of its target back to operators inside the APC, who then manually drive it toward the target. Tamuz teams work closely with an artillery unit, which operates Hermes 450 reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles that provide the intelligence on the targets that are then attacked by the Tamuz missile.

“The missile provides us with the ability to accurately attack targets from a standoff position without needing to physically come into contact with the enemy,” explained Col. Sharon, commander of the Artillery Corps’ David’s Sling Formation.

The Tamuz was used extensively during the Second Lebanon War in 2006 when Meitar fired 600 missiles at Hezbollah targets. Nevertheless, the results were not satisfactory and a new operational doctrine was written for how to operate the missile in an urban terrain and against which targets. The missile was again used against Hamas targets during Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip in January 2009 with greater success.

The Artillery Corps established the guided weapons unit following the Yom Kippur War in 1973 when IDF tanks came under heavy antitank fire and the military had difficulty engaging Syria’s and Egypt’s tanks.

According to OC Artillery Corps Brig.-Gen.

David Suisa, the Tamuz missile is an example of the type of advanced and accurate firepower the corps can bring to a future battlefield.

“We are in a different place today in comparison to the past,” Suisa said. “In a future war, the Artillery Corps will operate advanced weapons with enormous firepower as shown by the combination of using the Tamuz and UAVs such as the Hermes.”

IDF sources said the decision to unveil the Tamuz came after long deliberations within the defense establishment. One of the reasons the missile was declassified was since the IDF has decided to upgrade Meitar’s capabilities with new weapons systems, and while it will still use the Tamuz, it will not buy more after the current arsenal is exhausted.

On Tuesday, the Artillery Corps will begin its summer draft. The corps noted a record-high demand among recruits to serve in artillery units, with each slot filled by a soldier who asked to serve in the corps. This is in comparison to a few years ago when only half the positions were filled by men who asked to serve in the corps.

IAF ups pressure for V-22 buy

The Israeli air force (IAF) will increase the pressure on the country's ministry of defence to fund the purchase of Bell-Boeing V-22 tilt rotors, following a positive evaluation of the aircraft.

A delegation from the IAF, including pilots and technical experts, recently visited US Marine Corps sites in the United States, to inspect the USMC's MV-22B Ospreys.

Israeli sources said that feedback from the IAF was overwhelmingly positive.

The IAF now wants to include an initial order for "limited" numbers of the V-22 in the multi-year spending plan being prepared by the Israeli Defence Force.

That wish may not be granted, however, but as a contingency the IAF may use reserve budgets to fund the purchase.

Scott Donnelly, chief executive of Bell parent company Textron, recently suggested that up to 12 countries, including Israel, would end up purchasing the Osprey.

Arrow missile-defense may be installed on new warships

The General Staff has yet to decide whether it will buy two new surface vessels, estimated to cost over $500 million, is expected to make decision within weeks.

The IDF is considering installing Arrow missile-defense systems on new missile ships that it might acquire under the multi-year budget plan currently under review.

The General Staff has yet to decide whether it will buy two new surface vessels, estimated to cost over $500 million, and is expected to make a decision in the coming weeks.

The navy had originally decided to purchase the US Navy’s littoral combat ship, under development by Lockheed Martin, but backed away from the deal after the price soared. It is now looking into buying designs from Germany’s Blohm+Voss and to have the vessels built by Israel Shipyards, a privately owned company based in Haifa that already builds the navy’s smaller Shaldag patrol boats.

The thinking behind the installation of Arrow missiles on navy ships is the ability to make the missile-defense system mobile and to deploy it even far from the country in the event of a conflict. It would also enable the country to ensure survivability of key capabilities in the event that the ground-based systems are damaged.

Industry sources said that the Arrow, manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries and Boeing Company, could be deployed on ships. One of the first tests of the system was done from a platform at sea.
The US Navy already operates ships equipped with missile- defense systems called Aegis, which are fitted with SM-3 interceptors. In March, the US deployed the USS Monterey guided-missile cruiser in the Mediterranean and it is currently considering the deployment of a second vessel to beef up missile defense for its allies in the region and as part of its European missile-defense plan

IAF to Equip Choppers with Protective Systems

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) is planning to install systems on helicopters to protect against missile attacks.

The IAF decision comes following the recent shoulder-launched missile attack on a US Army Chinook helicopter, which killed 38 people, including 30 elite US troops.

The IAF also believes that insurgent groups in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon have obtained a significant number of shoulder-to-air missiles, including the Russian SA-7 and SA-8.

The installation of an active protection system aboard its helicopters would intercept enemy missiles like similar systems recently proven in combat on Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) tanks, according to the Jerusalem Post.

IAI mulls inflight refuelling for Heron UAS

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is evaluating aerial refuelling for the upgraded version of its Heron unmanned air system (UAS), which is better equipped to perform maritime missions.

The Israeli navy is in the process of phasing out its manned Westwind 1124 Seascan maritime reconnaissance aircraft, which have been operated since 1978, and using the Heron instead.

The new version of the Heron is equipped with an improved Elta Systems maritime radar, enhanced electro-optical payload and satellite communications.

An upgraded electrical system also supports the carriage of additional payloads.

Avi Bleser, marketing director of IAI's Malat UAS division, said the maritime version of the Heron has an operational range of 1,000km (540nm) and a loiter time of 8h. However, its total endurance can reach more than 20h, he said.

The maritime Heron normally operates in cooperation with navy ships, which can employ a "slave" mode to receive data from the UAS to avoid detection by enemy ships or aerial platforms.

The Israeli air force is operating Heron 1 ("Soval") UAS' with maritime patrol sensors as a "subcontractor" to the Israeli navy.

The service is now using the type to protect Israel's offshore natural gas fields from possible terrorist attacks by Hezbollah militants, foreign sources have claimed.
