- In a significant development that would provide the much-needed impetus to artillery’s firepower, India is ready with an indigenous 155mm, 52-calibre state-of-the-art gun. The Bangalore-based defence public sector undertaking, Bharat Earth Movers Limited, is ready with the wheeled gun and field trials have already started at its testing tracks in the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Karnataka.
This development comes in the backdrop of the fact that the artillery has not purchased a long-range gun in about 20 years following the Bofors gun controversy. The Government recently gave the nod to inviting global tenders for the 155mm guns and the proposed contract for over 1,000 guns, besides other range of artillery guns including Howitzers, worth over `20,000 crore.
Talking exclusively to The Pioneer, BEML chairman and managing director VRS Natarajan said they were the nodal processing agency for this gun, which would enhance the lethality of the defence forces. The gun is part of a technology transfer between a Slovakian company, DMD, and BEML to produce this high-precision gun for the Indian armed forces.
Natarajan said, “We have already been made a nodal processing agency for the 155mm, 52-calibre gun which is a state-of-the-art weapon to be inducted by India. We will produce and supply this to the defence forces. It’s a technology transfer; India wants to go for a very upgraded tank which is faster, lighter and able to have a greater fire power with lethality.”
He also said, “For the wheeled gun project, we have tied up with a Slovakian company, DMD, for a defence offset and the vehicle has already been made available for trial.
The time frame is about three years from the date of order by the defence forces. We expect it to commence in the current year or at most the next year.”
According to the BEML chief, the company was also looking at the tracked version of the same gun, which will give better fire power. “We have already set up a state-of-the-art, world-class test track. We have a firing range too,” Natarajan said, adding that the PSU was also in the process of setting up infrastructure for the overhauling of T72 and T90 tanks.
According to officials, the 155mm, 52-calibre gun — which is already in use by NATO countries - would augment Indian capabilities. At present, BEML has set up a testing range at KGF and started the trial of Suzana guns. This wheeled gun would increase the artillery power of the Indian Army. The gun’s trial evaluation is over and it is waiting for the request for proposal from the Indian Army, the officials added. d'autres photos de ce système _________________

- Slovakia to replace Mig29s with Swedish JAS39
Slovakia is considering ordering Swedish JAS-39 Gripen jets to replace its fleet of Russian MiG-29s, local media reported Wednesday.
Although U.S. F-16 remains an option, the Slovak Defense Ministry appears to be inclined toward Gripen, because the European jet is cheaper and less demanding in maintenance, said the SME newspaper.
Another factor favoring Gripen is Slovakia's plan to create a joint squadron with the neighboring Czech Republic, which has rented 14 Gripens for nine years and is preparing to extend the contract, it said. http://macedoniaonline.eu

- Slovakia to open talks with Sweden on Gripen jet fighters
IN ITS effort to boost defence capabilities, Slovakia is set to begin official talks on the rental of Gripen jet fighters from Sweden, with the Slovak government assigning the task to Defence Minister Martin Glváč at its regular session on March 18.
Glváč envisaged the beginning of the negotiations back in late January. The government maintains, as quoted by the TASR newswire, that Sweden is the only country to offer Slovakia an option whereby it could rent flying hours. Details of the costs and number of Gripens to be used in Slovakia are still to be elaborated during the talks.
The Slovak Armed Forces currently have Mig-29 jet fighters at their disposal, the contract for which will expire in 2016. According to Glváč, Slovakia cannot afford to purchase new fighter jets. The Czech Republic is also renting Gripen aircraft from Sweden.
Glváč said, according to the SITA newswire, that the Defence Ministry addressed several producers, governments and military attaches.
“The only partner who fulfils our current conditions is the Swedish government, and the producer of Gripens,” he said.
Glváč also said, as quoted by SITA, that there is still the possibility to continue with current jet fighters for which the license ends in November 2016, or Slovakia might agree with some ally on the protection of air space http://spectator.sme.sk

- Slovakia has signed an agreement with Poland to purchase 30 Rosomak 8x8 armoured vehicles.
Slovakia plans to buy 30 armored personnel carriers (APC) Rosomak from Poland over the next three years in a deal worth about $32 million, Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz said on Friday, July 3, 2015. The agreement was signed during Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico's official visit to Poland.
Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz praised the deal as a success of the Polish weapons industry, saying: "We want to promote Rosomaks not only in Europe, but also worldwide."
She added the agreement secured the employment of 3,500 people working at the plant in Siemianowice Slaskie, where the Rosomaks are built.
During the Defense Exhibition IDET 2015 which was held in May 2015, Polish Armament Group has presented the new ‘Scipio’, a cooperation between the Polish and Slovak defence industries based on the 8x8 wheeled armoured vehicle Rosomak.
The Scipio unveiled at IDET 2015 used the chassis of the Polish 8x8 armoured Rosomak fitted with a turret designed and manufactured by the Slovak Company EVPU. The turret is armed with a 30 mm main gun. Both Russian 2A42 30 mm gun or American Mk 44 Bushmaster II 30 mm gun, manufactured by Orbital ATK, can be used as main armament. Secondary armament first consists of PKT 7.62 mm or FN Minimi 7.62 mm machine guns.
At IDET 2015, the Scipio was also armed with two Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) Konkurs mounted to the left side of the turret.
The Polish Rosomak is a local variant of the Finnish Patria Armoured Modular Vehicle (AMV). he Rosomak was ordered by the Polish MoD (Ministry of Defence) in 2002 in order to modernize the Polish Army fleet. It is a Polish license-produced version of the Finnish Patria AMV.
The Rosomak has very similar layout of the Finnish AMV. The IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) variant of the Rosomak is fitted with an Italian turret Hitfist-30P. The turret is armed with with a Bushmaster II 30-mm cannon and coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun.
The Rosomak is a combat proven combat vehicle. It has been deployed with the Polish Army during the conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan and during peacekeeping mission in Chad and Central African Republic.

- Slovakia replaces semi-automatic pistol inventory
Remigiusz Wilk, Warsaw - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
24 December 2015
The four 9 mm semi-automatic handguns ordered by Slovakia on 16 December (from top): the Glock 17 Gen4 'intervention pistol'; and three CZ 'service pistols': the semi-compact CZ 2075D RAMI P, compact CZ P-07, and standard CZ P-09. Source: Slovakian Ministry of Internal Affairs
Slovakia has signed a four-year framework agreement worth EUR22.92 million (USD25 million) on 16 December for the delivery of 46,600 semi-automatic pistols for its armed forces, police, customs officers, prison and court guards, and financial crime investigation services. It is the largest rearmament programme in the history of Slovakian security forces.
To meet its various requirements, Slovakia is buying handguns chambered in 9x19 Parabellum, along with accessories, from Czech company Ceska Zbrojovka (CZ) and Austria's Glock. Beretta and SIG Sauer (represented by local dealer Rapier) also bid for the requirement, but were unsuccessful.
Due to each of the services' various needs, the tender was split into two parts, with two types of handguns chambered in 9x19 mm sought: 26,641 'intervention pistols' in three variants (11,841 standard; 7,700 compact and 4,100 semi-compact) featuring a manual safety catch; and 20,000 'service pistols' with only internal safety mechanisms. The weapons are to be delivered with accessories such as holsters, pouches, lanyards, and tactical flashlights.
CZ is to deliver 'service pistols' chambered in the 9x19 mm calibre worth EUR14.1 million. These will comprise three types of handgun: the standard CZ P-09 (EUR265 each); the compact CZ P-07 (EUR285 each); and the semi-compact CZ 2075D RAMI (EUR295 each).
Glock, meanwhile, will provide 20,000 Glock 17 Gen4 'intervention pistols' worth EUR8.7 million.
According to the Slovakian Ministry of Internal Affairs, each handgun was purchased for EUR290.
The new handguns are to replace the current standard pistol of the Slovak armed forces and police: the CZ vz 82 chambered in 9x18 mm, which was introduced in 1992. Slovakia intends to sell off its CZ vz 82s.
First deliveries of the new handguns are expected in January and February 2016. Around 24,000 are planned to be delivered to the police (12,000 Glocks for patrol officers and 11,000 CZ pistols for investigation units), 15,000 to the army and the rest to other services.

The Slovak Republic Armed Forces received six Tatra T 815-79OR99 38 300 8x8.1R-L2 High Mobility Heavy Duty (HMHD) tactical trucks in late January 2016 as part of an ongoing wheeled vehicle fleet recapitalisation programme that began in 2012.
The L2 variant features NATO STANAG 4569 Level 2 protection to counter small arms fire and mine threats. The vehicle is 9.8 m long, 2.55 m wide, and 2.98 m tall and has a maximum payload capacity of 19,450 kg.
Powered by a Tatra T3C-928-90 12.7-litre turbocharged V8 diesel that develops 402 hp, it can achieve a maximum road speed of 85 km/h.
Unlike previous piecemeal attempts to modernise its logistics vehicle fleet, the service has already received over 200 new vehicles from four suppliers under the latest initiative.
