In a significant development that would provide the much-needed impetus to artillery’s firepower, India is ready with an indigenous 155mm, 52-calibre state-of-the-art gun. The Bangalore-based defence public sector undertaking, Bharat Earth Movers Limited, is ready with the wheeled gun and field trials have already started at its testing tracks in the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Karnataka.
This development comes in the backdrop of the fact that the artillery has not purchased a long-range gun in about 20 years following the Bofors gun controversy. The Government recently gave the nod to inviting global tenders for the 155mm guns and the proposed contract for over 1,000 guns, besides other range of artillery guns including Howitzers, worth over `20,000 crore.
Talking exclusively to The Pioneer, BEML chairman and managing director VRS Natarajan said they were the nodal processing agency for this gun, which would enhance the lethality of the defence forces. The gun is part of a technology transfer between a Slovakian company, DMD, and BEML to produce this high-precision gun for the Indian armed forces.
Natarajan said, “We have already been made a nodal processing agency for the 155mm, 52-calibre gun which is a state-of-the-art weapon to be inducted by India. We will produce and supply this to the defence forces. It’s a technology transfer; India wants to go for a very upgraded tank which is faster, lighter and able to have a greater fire power with lethality.”
He also said, “For the wheeled gun project, we have tied up with a Slovakian company, DMD, for a defence offset and the vehicle has already been made available for trial.
The time frame is about three years from the date of order by the defence forces. We expect it to commence in the current year or at most the next year.”
According to the BEML chief, the company was also looking at the tracked version of the same gun, which will give better fire power. “We have already set up a state-of-the-art, world-class test track. We have a firing range too,” Natarajan said, adding that the PSU was also in the process of setting up infrastructure for the overhauling of T72 and T90 tanks.
According to officials, the 155mm, 52-calibre gun — which is already in use by NATO countries - would augment Indian capabilities. At present, BEML has set up a testing range at KGF and started the trial of Suzana guns. This wheeled gun would increase the artillery power of the Indian Army. The gun’s trial evaluation is over and it is waiting for the request for proposal from the Indian Army, the officials added.

Slovakia signs for 14 Lockheed Martin F-16 combat aircraft
Dec 13, 2018
Slovakia has signed an agreement with Lockheed Martin for 14 Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70/72 combat aircraft (12 single-seat and 2 two-seat models).
Slovakia has signed the contract on Wednesday with Lockheed Martin vice president of international business development Ana Wugofski for new F-16 Block 70/72 combat aircraftto replace its Russian made MiG-29 jets.
“I’m delighted to be here today to witness this historic, very important moment,” U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan said in Bratislava. “This is a significant step for Slovakia in it is own defense, as an important NATO ally, and as an important step forward in the bilateral relationship between the United States and Slovakia,” Sullivan said.
The first four jets are scheduled to be delivered by 2022, the remainder the following year.
Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini said his country will pay over 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) for the aircraft. The deal also includes ammunition, the training of pilots and other personnel and logistics services.
“By signing, Slovakia declares it is ready to meet its obligations to increase its military budget and reach the goal of two percent of gross domestic product,” Pellegrini said.
The Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70/72 is the latest and most advanced F-16 on the market today. The F-16 Block 70/72 configuration includes numerous enhancements designed to keep the F-16 at the forefront of international security, strengthening its position as the world’s foremost combat-proven 4th Generation multi-role fighter aircraft.
The F-16 Block 70/72 provides advanced combat capabilities in a scalable and affordable package. The core of the F-16 Block 70/72 configuration is an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, a modern commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)-based avionics subsystem, a large-format, high-resolution display; and a high-volume, high-speed data bus. Operational capabilities are enhanced through a Link-16 Theater Data Link, Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod, advanced weapons, precision GPS navigation, and the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (Auto GCAS).
The Slovak Ministry of Defence (MoD) is acquiring a 25 Zuzana 2 self-propelled howitzers, according to a local media report.
Deliveries of a first four 155 mm self-propelled howitzers for the Slovak armed forces are scheduled for the July 2020, another five by the end of the same year, eight more howitzer until the end of 2021 and the last eight artillery systems by the end of 2022.
The contract, announced by the Slovak MoD, is worth more than $206 million (EUR175 million) and includes crew training, spare parts, ammunition.
The Zuzana 2 is an advanced wheeled 155mm self-propelled gun-howitzer with automatic loading of ammunition developed by KONŠTRUKTA-Defence. The 155 mm self-propelled howitzer is mounted on a TATRA 8×8 special chassis. The chassis offers enhanced mobility and long range.
The artillery system is a new version of the 155mm / 45 calibre Zuzana self-propelled howitzer which entered into service with the Slovak Army in 1998.
The Slovak armed forces currently field 16 ShKH Zuzana 155 mm SPHs with a 45 calibre-length barrel.

Slovakian UH-60M on delivery
At this moment, two new UH-60M Black Hawks are at Bremerhaven (Germany) to be delivered to the Vzdušné sily Ozbrojených sil Slovenskej Republiky (SAF, Slovak Air Force) this week.
The two multi-purpose helicopters are expected to depart Bremerhaven on 26 August 2019 towards Sliac air base (Slovakia) and later on to their new home base Presov (Slovakia), where they will be assigned to Vrtulnikové kridlo, 1. Vrtul’niková letka.
The SAF already received four such Black Hawks since august 2017, when the first two (serials 7639 and 7640) were delivered. These were followed by two others (7641 and 7642) in July 2018.
With the delivery of these two (serials 7448 and 7449,) the SAF received six out of nine ordered UH-60Ms. The other three are schedules for delivery later this year. These Black Hawks are replacing the aging Soviet build Mi-17s.
Scramble is looking for the construction numbers and FMS serials of almost all Slovakian Black Hawks, only a few are known to us. Take a look at our free accessible database (*) to see what information is missing. If you have supplementary information, please let us know so we can update our database. Thanks in advance!

Will Slovakia buy KAI FA-50?
South Korea’s sole aircraft manufacturer, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is negotiating with the Slovakian Government for the sale of ten KAI FA-50 fighter/attack aircraft to the Vzdušné sily Ozbrojených sil Slovenskej Republiky (SAF, Slovak Air Force). A possible contract is valued at USD 500 million.
The SAF wants to replace its ageing fleet of L-39 Albatros trainer aircraft. Currently, the air force operates six L-39 trainers, two L-39ZAM and four L-39CM.
On 2 November 2021, South Korea's president Moon Jae-in arrived in Budapest (Hungary) for his European tour. On Thursday he was guest to a summit with the prime ministers of Hungary, Czechia, Poland and Slovakia (members of the Visegrád Group). This was the second summit between South Korea and the group.
In October 2021, Yonhap News Agency reported that KAI was seeking to export the FA-50 to the SAF. During the visit of the South Korean president, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between KAI and LOTN on 3 November 2021. Through this MoU, KAI seeks to discuss industrial cooperation plans with LOTN for the FA-50’s participation in the procurement competition for advanced trainer and light attack aircraft and to facilitate industrial offset negotiations.
It is expected that Slovakia issues a request for proposals (RFP) in the beginning of 2022.

Slovakia and Finland to buy 76 Patria AMVxp 8x8 armored combat vehicles
Defense News August 2022 Global Security army industry
POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, 31 AUGUST 2022 10:57
Slovakia and Finland with Patria have signed a comprehensive government-to-government (G2G) agreement to purchase 76 armored combat vehicles (ACV) from Patria.
IFV variant of the Patria AMVxp 8x8 armored combat vehicle (Picture source: Patria)
Within Slovakia’s BOV 8x8 programme, Patria will contribute to the development of the local engineering and defence industry with transferring high-end armored modular vehicle technical experience and innovations. Geographically, industrial cooperation covers Slovakia widely. The programme will create educational benefits and jobs that provide work for decades, including life cycle services that come after the project.
“Patria is proud to provide the most modern spearhead combat vehicle solution for Slovakian Land Forces. We’ve had intensive and productive negotiations with the Slovakian Ministry of Defence and the Slovakian industry. Together with Konštrukta Defence, EVPU and CSM, as well as with other local companies, we have created a long-term solution that provides Slovakia with sustainable security of supply. Additionally, this agreement provides Slovakia the possibility to continue stable acquisition of vehicle variants and related support of full lifecycle services under the same contract”, states Jukka Holkeri, Executive Vice President for Global Division in Patria.
In March 2022 the Slovakian Ministry of Defence selected Finland with Patria AMVxp 8x8 as BOV 8x8 programme tender winner. Patria AMVxp 8x8 came out on top after system tests and feasibility study evaluation. In the end of March, the Slovakian government announced approval for the Slovakian Ministry of Defence to start contract negotiations with Finland and Patria. The agreed purchase consists of 76 armored combat vehicles, with three vehicle variants.
Gun System variant of the Patria AMVxp 8x8 armored combat vehicle (Picture source: Patria)
Patria AMVxp is built on the success of Patria AMV in the 8x8 armored wheeled vehicles sector. The Patria AMV (Armored Modular Vehicle) is an 8×8 multi-role military vehicle. Its main feature is its modular design, which allows the incorporation of different turrets, weapons, sensors, or communications systems on the same carriage. Designs exist for different APC vehicles (armored personnel carrier) and IFV versions (infantry fighting vehicle), communications versions, ambulances and different fire support versions, armed with large caliber mortar and gun systems. The vehicle has a very good level of mine protection and can withstand explosions of up to 10 kilograms (22 lb) TNT. The AMV has protection levels up to 30 mm APFSDS frontal arc. Another important feature is the very good mobility (combining speed, agility, and crew comfort) in rough terrain, enabled by the sophisticated but rugged hydropneumatic suspension adjusting each wheel individually.
Patria AMVxp’s mobility is based on an upgraded powerline providing 450 kW engine power together with an Integrated Terrain Control System (ITCS). Patria AMVxp’s electrical power generation is measured to match even future requirements for C4I, Battlefield Management and Situational Awareness Systems. Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) together with the vehicle’s digital backbone ensures soldiers to have the best possible platform to meet their objectives in every theatre of operation.
