The strengths of the Turkish defence industry have been a high-level of cost effectivity, high quality, on time delivery and a very effective after-sales support in all of those regions. We are also working on a new export credit mechanism for Government to Government (G2G) sales of defence products. We believe that Turkish defence products will be also advantageous in terms of finance after establishing this credit mechanism.

Turkish armored vehicle manufacturer Otokar is also seeking to expand its presence on the African continent with its Cobra light armored vehicle.
The company, which first displayed its armored products at the Africa Aerospace and Defence Exhibition last year, said it is pushing hard to develop new defense equipment supply deals with Africa. Algeria, which has a number of Cobra light armored vehicles, is among the African countries targeted for Otokar’s expansion into Africa.
Lale Sariibrahimoglu, Ankara - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 15 August 2013
Turkey has cancelled a contract to build warships worth around USD2 billion after the prime minister's inspection office concluded it was not in the public interest.
"The tender was not carried out in a competitive manner by not allowing other eligible companies to bid in the project," a source from the prime minister's office told IHS Jane's . "If more companies competed in the tender it could have made possible a reduction in price. Hence, the inspectors' report concluded that the tender violated the rules of competition."
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed the inspectors' report - completed at the beginning of August following an investigation into the tender proceedings - which suggested cancellation of the tender to open a new one. ...

Turkey's achievements in the defense industry in recent years continue to attract potential new partners such as Brazil, a leading emerging economy. The potential for cooperation in a good number of projects in the defense industry is expected to be discussed by top-level officials from both sides as Celso Amorim, Brazilian minister of defense, is in Turkey on the occasion of the activation of the office of a military attaché at the Brazilian Embassy in Ankara.
“I think we will discuss seven or eight [projects] and then concentrate on two or three of the projects,” Amorim told Today's Zaman on Monday. Buying arms from one another may also come onto the agenda, but the minister particularly stressed the potential for cooperation in joint projects, but noted that it is not possible at this stage to state which projects the two countries may work on together.
Turkey's homemade corvette with stealth technology and the unmanned aerial vehicle (Anka-Phoenix) together with the attack helicopter Turkey has recently produced with the help of Italian AgustaWestland are some of the leading Turkish weapons Brazil seems to be interested in. “You have a corvette which has very high standards […] very good helicopters. I think the UAV is [also] a possibility,” said the minister of defense of Brazil, a country which has been busy redeveloping its own corvette. “We can learn from each other and improve each other,” added Amorim, a career diplomat who also served for many years as minister of foreign affairs.
For its part, the South American country is ready to cooperate with Turkey in areas in which it is stronger than Turkey, such as light fighter and civilian jets. Brazil has also been developing its own unmanned aerial vehicles with the help of the Israeli Elbit Systems. “Brazil is very good at civilian airplanes,” stated Amorim, who sounded hopeful about cooperation, but also noted that the two countries are at present at the learning stage, trying to get to know each other's capabilities better.
Satellites may also turn out to be a potential field of cooperation between the two countries. Turkey has been making efforts to produce its own satellite, a field where Brazil, having already produced its own satellite some years ago, is stronger than Turkey. “Even satellites. … Maybe we can look at it [for possible cooperation as well],” the minister commented.
Turkey, having assigned a defense attaché to Brazil three years ago, is also eager to improve defense ties with South America's largest economy. In an effort to boost bilateral ties, Turkish Minister of Defense İsmet Yılmaz also paid a visit to Brazil last year.
As part of the strengthening of relations between the two countries, the exchange of cadets and officers may also come onto the agenda. Noting that courses are usually offered in English at academies of most armed forces in the world, Amorim stated, “So, we can receive people from your war colleges, [defense] academies and vice versa.” Amorim was received by President Abdullah Gül on Monday and is also expected, on Wednesday, to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, with whom he is known to have very good personal relations.
The Turkish defense industry has been developing by leaps and bounds in recent years. As per data from the Defense and Aerospace Industry Manufacturers Association (SaSad), the total industry turnover, including sale of items produced by the civilian aviation industry, reached $4.4 billion in 2011, while the total exports figure amounted to $1.1 billion in the same year. The defense-only figure, which is stripped of civilian aviation items, stands at $817 million. In 2012, defense industry exports, both civilian and military, rose to $1.262 billion, while the figure was only a little over $600 million in 2007, and $850 million in 2010.
As per the strategic plan of the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM) for 2012-16, the industry aims to increase yearly revenue to $8 billion and exports to $2 billion by 2016. Presently ranked 16th in terms of turnover, the industry hopes to place in the top 10 in the world by 2023, the centennial of the foundation of the Turkish Republic. Turkey is also working towards the domestic production of fighter jets, with the first test flight expected to take place in 2023.
UMTAS anti-tank missile datalink operates in S-band
The radio frequency (RF) datalink that provides Roketsan's UMTAS (Uzun Menzilli Anti-Tank Füzesi) long-range antitank missile with its lock-on-after-launch (LOAL) capability was developed by Turkish company Aselsan. The RF VBB (RF Veri Bagi Birimi) is a two-way datalink and operates in S-band (2-4 GHz). It has a 3 Mbps downlink speed and 30 kbps uplink speed.
A complete datalink consists of an electronic unit and antenna mounted in the missile, and an electronic unit and antenna mounted in the launcher.
The missile's electronic unit is 145 mm in diameter, 25 mm thick, and weighs less than 500 g. The launcher's electronic unit is of near identical size and weight. Both require a 24-32 V DC power supply.
Different types of antenna have been developed for the missile and launcher by Turkish company Meteksan Savunma. That used in the missile takes the form of a flat strip with a height of 92 mm and a weight of less than 500 g.
Mounted on the front part of the UMTAS launcher, the antenna unit takes the form of a flat panel measuring 140 mm x 135 mm, and 25 mm in thickness. It weighs less than 300 g.
Qualification trials of the RF VBB datalink ended in December 2012, and the hardware is currently in production.
The datalink hardware is designed to cope with temperatures ranging from -35° to 60° C, and to operate at altitudes of up to 15 000 ft.
Developed as the main anti-tank weapon of the new Turkish T-129 ATAK attack helicopter, UMTAS is being promoted on the international market as the TAM-LR (Turkish Anti-tank Missile - Long Range). According to the latest information released by Roketsan, the length of the missile is 1,800 mm, a figure slightly longer then the 1,750 mm previously stated.
Turkish first training aircraft Hürkuş made its maiden flight
Hürkuş, TAI’s Primary and Basic Trainer Aircraft (HÜRKUŞ) Development Program aircraft made its maiden flight in TAI facilities Kazan, Ankara today. The33 minute long flight was successfully accomplished. Turkey plans to have three versions of Hürkuş. First for civilian use, second for military training and last for military use with weapon pylon.
Design, development, prototype production and international certification via utilization of domestic facilities by the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) of an original trainer that would meet Turkish Armed Forces’ future needs and take a share in the world trainer market, and constitution of Technical Data Package and Integrated Logistic Support infrastructure for these prototypes. The aircraft has been named HÜRKUŞ, in commemoration of Vecihi Hürkuş.
The Hürkuş contract has been signed on 15 March 2006 between Undersecretariat of Defence Industries (SSM) and TAI. The Program is constituted of 6 phases. In July 2006 Preliminary Definition Review, in December 2006 Conceptual Design Review, in August 2007 Preliminary Design Review and in April 2009 Critical Design Review phases have been accomplished.
Aug 22/13: Brazil. Turkey and Brazil are forming a number of working groups on defense cooperation. Their release specifically mentions that the aeronautics working group will be studying the assembly of Turkish helicopters in Brazil. The T129 is the only candidate that fits. Note that Brazil already fields a handful of Russian Mi-35M attack helicopters, with a limited secondary capability as transports. On the other hand, they could definitely use more armed helicopters, and local production appeals.
The flip side is that Turkey would be studying the assembly of Brazilian aircraft in Turkey. Embraer offers the Super Tucano, a number of military aircraft based on their ERJ 145 regional jetliner, and the KC-390 medium transport. Turkey is committed to buy 10 A400M medium transports, but they have 32 C160 and C-130 medium transports to replace, so a future KC-390 buy is possible. Other possibilities are more restricted, as Turkey already has projects or orders in those categories: KAI’s KT-1 for training, Boeing’s E-737 AWACS for aerial surveillance, and Airbus ATR-72s and CN-235s for maritime patrol. Qatar introduces new Aselsan naval remote weapons system
Turkish company Aselsan has supplied the Qatari Navy with a first batch of the new SMASH naval remote controlled gun system.
Six units were ordered under a contract, agreed in February of 2012, between Aselsan and Turkish shipbuilder Yonca-Onuk JV - the company selected to deliver the Multi-Role Tactical Platform (MRTP) ship programme to the Qatari Navy.
IHS Jane's understand that the SMASH systems were purchased principally to arm three MRTP 34 fast patrol boats, purchased by Qatar in 2012. Three MRTP 16 fast intervention craft were also reportedly acquired in the same year.
SMASH was publicly unveiled in May 2013, during the IDEF 2013 defence industry exposition in Istanbul, Turkey.
