Iranian Navy Dispatches Heavy-Class Submarine to High Seas in East Asia

Armée Iranienne/Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran - Page 9 13920829000392_PhotoI

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Navy's Tareq-class submarine, 'Younus', was dispatched to the East Asian waters, a Navy commander announced on Wednesday.
“The (Iranian) Navy will dispatch the ultra heavy Tareq-class submarine, ‘Younus’ as part of the Navy’s 28th flotilla of warships to the countries of East Asia,” Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Navy for Operations Admiral Siyavash Jarreh said Wednesday afternoon, a few hours before the 28th flotilla left the harbor in Southern Iran.
He underlined Iran's sophisticated technology in the naval industry, saying “The most complicated technology of world’s military equipment belongs to submarines.”
The Admiral said that Alborz destroyer and Bandar Abbas helicopter-carrier warship will accompany Younus in this crucially important extraterritorial mission of the Iranian Navy.
“The Navy’s 28th Flotilla will berth at Mumbai and Colombo ports during its voyage,” he added.
In 2011, 'Younus' submarine managed to set a new record in sailing the international waters and high seas for 68 days.
Iran's Younus submarine, sailing alongside warships of the 14th fleet of the Iranian Navy, returned home in early June 2011 following an over two-month-long mission in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
In May 2012, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari lauded Iranian experts' success in repairing heavy submarines, saying their outstanding capabilities and mastery of the hi-tech used in naval vessels display the failure of enemy sanctions and pressures.
He said the submarine, called Tareq, is now fully ready to be dispatched to the high seas.
In September 2012, the Iranian Navy officially launched a heavy submarine after the subsurface vessel was overhauled by the country's experts.
Tareq 901 submarine was launched in Iran's Southern port city of Bandar Abbas at the order of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution and Commander in Chief Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.
In August, the Iranian Navy dispatched its 27th flotilla of warships to the high seas to protect the country's cargo ships and oil tankers against pirates.
Admiral Sayyari said the 27th fleet was dispatched after the return of the 26th fleet of the Iranian Navy, comprised of the Bandar Abbas warship and the Alvand destroyer returned home.
Sayyari also said that the mission of the warships is to provide security for Iranian oil tankers and commercial ships sailing on the open seas.
He added that the 26th Fleet had operated in the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea, and the Northern Indian Ocean during its mission on the open seas and visited a number of ports in Oman and Djibouti.
The Iranian Navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008, when Somali raiders hijacked the Iranian-chartered cargo ship, MV Delight, off the coast of Yemen.
According to UN Security Council resolutions, different countries can send their warships to the Gulf of Aden and coastal waters of Somalia against the pirates and even with prior notice to Somali government enter the territorial waters of that country in pursuit of Somali sea pirates.
The Gulf of Aden - which links the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea - is an important energy corridor, particularly because Persian Gulf oil is shipped to the West via the Suez Canal.

Report: Satellite Imagery Shows Iran Launching Biggest Submarine Yet in Persian Gulf

Iran has launched its Fateh-class submarine, the largest it has ever built, into the Persian Gulf, and is building a second at the Caspian port of Bandar Anzali, according to satellite imagery seen by IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly, which is publishing the photographs later on Wednesday.
Jane’s said that at about 48 meters, the Fateh-class is bigger than the largest subs built by North Korea, which is believed to have helped Iran produce its 29-meter Ghadir midget subs. The one being built at Bandar Anzali will also be the first submarine launched in the Caspian.
“This is another step in the militarization of the hydrocarbon-rich Caspian, where Iran has yet to come to an agreement with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan regarding their territorial boundaries,” Jane’s wrote.
The defense sector weekly said that Iran may be planning to unveil the new subs on Navy Day, November 28th, marking a naval victory over Iraq in 1980.
The unveiling would come just days after a U.S.-brokered international treaty lifted economic sanctions on the regime.

Overhauled Lavan Warship, Combat Chopper Back into Operation

Armée Iranienne/Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran - Page 9 13920610000349_PhotoI

TEHRAN (FNA)- The newly-overhauled warship, Lavan, which has been equipped with advanced weapons and radar systems, and the newly-overhauled SH3D combat helicopter came back into operation in a ceremony attended by senior Iranian commanders on Saturday.
Navy commanders said the overhaul of Lavan chopper carrier, including renovation and operationalizing its hydraulic systems which needs a very complicated technical procedure, has taken 33 months.
Meantime, the SH3D combat helicopter also came back into operation for the Navy after nearly 20 months of overhaul repairs and seven months of tests.
Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Army Brigadier General Abdul-Rahim Mousavi and Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari were present in the ceremony.
Lavan warship is capable of carrying RH and SH helicopters as well as armored personnel carriers.
In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.
In September, Sayyari had announced in September that the country's Navy has equipped its newly-overhauled warship, Lavan, with advanced weapons and radar systems to improve its performance and fire power.
"Some repairs and changes have been made to the body as well as the sailing, sonar and radar systems, weapons and information-gathering sensors of the warship," he told reporters on the sidelines of a forum in the Northern city of Noshahr at the time.
"The warship needed an overhaul and equipment with the state of the art and novel technologies and therefore the warship's weapons have been modernized," he added.
"The overhaul operations have been thoroughly made by the young and committed experts of the naval industry," he added.
On Wednesday, a senior Navy commander announced that the Iranian Navy plans to expand its fleet by launching three new warships later this week.
“Two missile-launcher warships, namely Neyzeh and Tabarzin, as well as Sirjan logistic warship will join the Navy’s military fleet on December 1 (Sunday),” Commander of Iran’s Second Naval Zone Rear Admiral Mohammad Reza Abbasian told reporters, addressing a press conference in the Southern city of Bushehr.
He noted that the three vessels have been fully renovated by Iranian experts and by using indigenized knowledge.
The Iranian Navy has accelerated and widened its progress after Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei described it as "a strategic force".
"Given the current issues of the world and today's geopolitical conditions of the world, we should strengthen ourselves in sea and in coast as far as we can," Ayatollah Khamenei stressed on November 28, 2010, addressing senior Navy commanders here in Tehran in a ceremony to commemorate the National Navy Day.
The leader also stressed that increasing manpower, recruiting talented personnel and taking innovations and initiatives into action are highly necessary for the future of the country's naval forces.
Iran's naval power has even been acknowledged by foes. In a Sep. 11, 2008 report, the Washington Institute for the Near East Policy said that in the two decades since the Iraqi imposed war on Iran, the Islamic Republic has excelled in naval capabilities and is able to wage unique asymmetric warfare against larger naval forces.
According to the report, Iran's Navy has been transformed into a highly motivated, well-equipped, and well-financed force and is effectively in control of the world's oil lifeline, the Strait of Hormuz.
The study says that if Washington takes military action against the Islamic Republic, the scale of Iran's response would likely be proportional to the scale of the damage inflicted on Iranian assets.

Navy Commander: Iran to Dispatch 28th Flotilla to Mumbai Tomorrow

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari announced that the navy’s 28th Flotilla will be dispatched to India’s Mumbai port on Thursday.
Admiral Sayyari noted that the 28th Flotilla comprises Alborz destroyer, Bandar Abbas helicopter-carrier warship and the Tareq-class submarine, Younes, and added, “This flotilla will berth in Mumbai with the mission of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries and supervising the security of Iran’s interests.”
Another ranking commander of the Iranian Navy had announced earlier that the Younus submarine would be dispatched to the East Asian waters.
“The (Iranian) Navy will dispatch the ultra heavy Tareq-class submarine, ‘Younus’ as part of the Navy’s 28th flotilla of warships to the countries of East Asia,” Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Navy for Operations Admiral Siyavash Jarreh said last month.
He underlined Iran's sophisticated technology in the naval industry, saying “The most complicated technology of world’s military equipment belongs to submarines.”
“The Navy’s 28th Flotilla will berth at Mumbai and Colombo ports during its voyage,” he added.

L'Iran va installer son nouveau radar 3D LRR à balayage électronique "Asr" sur ses navires de combat

Iran will install its newly unveiled Asr radar system on the Jamaran destroyer, head of the Iranian Navy's Industrial Research and Self-Sufficiency Organisation Rear Admiral Ali Gholamzadeh said, Fars news agency reported on Dec. 4.
The Asr naval phased array long range radar system being manufactured by the Navy Industrial Research and Self-Sufficiency Organisation was unveiled on Nov.27.
Gholamzadeh went on to note that the radar is also planned to be installed on the Sahand destroyer which is being built.
"If a new radar system is not manufactured until the Sahand destroyer's launch, Asr will be installed on board," he said.
Gholamzadeh also underlined that sailing range of the Sahand would be twice that of the Jamaran destroyer as well as its weapons.
In recent years, Iran's Navy has been increasing its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.
The Islamic Republic has repeatedly asserted that its overseas naval presence is meant to convey a message of peace and friendship to regional countries.
In line with international efforts against piracy, the navy has also been conducting patrols in the pirate infested Gulf of Aden since November 2008 in order to safeguard merchant containers and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran or other countries.

Iran Mulls Replacement for Russian S-300 Missile System

Armée Iranienne/Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran - Page 9 Bilde?Site=M5&Date=20140113&Category=DEFREG04&ArtNo=301130011&Ref=AR&MaxW=640&Border=0&Iran-Mulls-Replacement-Russian-S-300-Missile-System
Tehran is considering a replacement for the Russian S-300 missile defense system, a senior Iranian lawmaker told Fars news agency Monday.

TEHRAN — Tehran is considering a replacement for the Russian S-300 missile defense system, a senior Iranian lawmaker told Fars news agency Monday.
Russia signed a contract with Iran in 2007 to deliver five S-300 advanced ground-to-air missiles — which can target aircraft or guided missiles — at a cost of $800 million (590 million euros).
In 2010, Russia's then-president Dmitry Medvedev cancelled the contract because of UN sanctions and strong US and Israeli pressure over concerns about Tehran's disputed nuclear program.
"We had a meeting with the Iranian ambassador to Russia and held talks over the (delivery) of a substitute system for S-300," Fars quoted Esmaeel Kosari, the head of parliament's Defence Committee, as saying.
"A team from defense ministry has already gone (to Russia) and another team is due to go there again to discuss the issue," Kosari said.
But his comments are at odds with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's stance on the delivery of a substitute system for S-300.
"We still insist on the implementation of the previous agreements... considering the very good ties between Iran and Russia we hope to resolve the problem in an acceptable way," Zarif said in December.
Iran lodged a $4 billion lawsuit against Russia at an international court in Geneva.
Western powers had slapped Iran with sanctions over suspicions it was using its nuclear activities to produce an atomic bomb, despite repeated denials from Tehran, which insists its program is peaceful.
Iran and major world powers clinched a historic nuclear deal in November.
Tehran agreed to curb parts of its nuclear drive for six months in exchange for modest sanction relief and a promise by Western powers not to impose new measures on its economy.
On Sunday, Both sides agreed to implement the deal.

Iran Planning to Send Team to Russia to Choose Replacement for S-300 Missile System Delivery

TEHRAN (FNA)
“I accompanied the chairman of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission (Alaeddin Boroujerdi) in a meeting with the Iranian ambassador to Russia and discussed the substitute system for the S-300,” Chairman of the parliament’s Defense Committee Esmayeel Kosari told FNA today.

“A team from the defense ministry has left (for Russia) and another team is due to travel there again to discuss the issue,” he added.

Kosari underlined that when the time is ripe for the endorsement of a contract to buy a substitute for the S-300 defense shield from Russia, the Iranian parliament will also send its representatives to the talks to become informed of the process.

In 2007, Iran signed a contract worth $800mln to buy five Russian S-300 missile defense systems.

But the deal was scrapped in 2010 by then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who was unilaterally expanding on sanctions against Iran imposed by the UN Security Council.

Iran filed a $4bln lawsuit against Russia in the international arbitration court in Geneva, which is currently pending review.

Moscow has struggled to have the lawsuit dropped, including by offering the Tor anti-aircraft systems as replacement, media reported in December, adding that the offer was rejected by Tehran.

The Antei-2500, however, may be a better solution. The system does not formally fall under the existing sanctions against Iran while still being useful for the Middle-Eastern country.

While the S-300 was developed for the use by missile defense forces, the Antei-2500 was specifically tailored for the needs of ground forces, which could also be an advantage for Iran, known for its large land force.

The S-300 is a series of Russian long range surface-to-air missile systems produced by NPO Almaz, all based on the initial S-300P version. The S-300 system was developed to defend against aircraft and cruise missiles for the Soviet Air Defense Forces. Subsequent variations were developed to intercept ballistic missiles

The S-300 system was first deployed by the Soviet Union in 1979, designed for the air defense of large industrial and administrative facilities, military bases, and control of airspace against enemy strike aircraft.

Iran sends warships to Atlantic

TEHRAN: Two Iranian warships set sail Tuesday for the Atlantic Ocean on their navy’s first-ever mission there, state TV reported.
The voyage comes amid an ongoing push by Iran to demonstrate the ability to project power across the Middle East and beyond.
The report said that the destroyer Sabalan and the logistic helicopter carrier Khark will be dispatched on a three-month voyage.
“The warships will have task of securing shipping routes as well as training new personnel,” the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Iran’s navy chief Admiral Habibollah Sayyari as saying.
It said the ships, carrying some 30 navy academy cadets for training along with their regular crews, left the southern Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. It did not mention any ports of call.
Iran has regularly deployed warships to the Gulf of Aden off the eastern coast of Africa to fight piracy and protect commercial ships.
The recent Iranian naval surge is also a response to US naval deployment near the Islamic Republic’s coasts in the Persian Gulf. The US Navy’s 5th fleet is based in Bahrain — across the gulf from Iran.
It has also sent its warships to Syrian waters in recent years.
In 2012, Iran said it aims to put warships in international waters off the US coast within the next few years, and extend its reach as far as Antarctica.

Iran to fit its new "Sayyad (Hunter) 2" surface to air missile on Mowdge class vessels

Fars News Agency, quoting Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Navy for Operations Admiral Siyavash Jarreh, announced that the new Sayyad 2 Surface to Air Missiles would be modified in order to be fitted on Iran's Navy Mowdge class "Destroyers" (Frigate in western standards).

Armée Iranienne/Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran - Page 9 Sayyad_2_SAM_Iran

The Iranian defense ministry in November inaugurated the production line of Sayyad 2’.

The production line of the missile was launched in a ceremony attended by Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan.

“The designing and production of Sayyad 2 missile was brought on agenda to have the needed defensive tool for confronting (possible) air raids,” Dehqan said, addressing the ceremony in Tehran.

“The missile enjoys a solid fuel engine with a combined guiding system and high operational capabilities,” he added.

Dehqan explained that Sayyad 2 is a missile for mid-range and high-altitude air defense systems, designed based on the state-of-the-art technologies which can destroy different types of helicopters, drones and targets with small radar cross-section and high speed and maneuverability within its operational range.

Iran successfully test-fired its latest air-defense missile system, Sayyad 2, in 2011.

Iran had earlier unveiled Sayyad 1 surface-to-air missile which is a two-staged air defense missile that is capable of destroying targets with low Radar Cross Section (RCS) at low and medium altitudes.

The system enjoys the capability to defuse jamming and electronic warfare attacks.

Sayyad 2 is an upgraded version and enjoys higher precision, range and destruction power compared with its previous version.

Iran's first home-made destroyer, Jamaran, was launched in late February 2010. The Mowdge Class vessel has a displacement of around 14,000 tons and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities and is armed with a variety of anti-ship, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles.

Iran to Unveil New Generation of Home-Made Fighter Jet

February 02, 2014 - 14:02
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian air force commander announced that the country is producing new generation of its home-made Saeqeh (Thunderbolt) fighter jet, adding that the new aircraft will be unveiled in coming months.

Armée Iranienne/Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran - Page 9 139211131308463802031573

Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Air Force Brigadier General Alireza Barkhor told the Tasnim News Agency on Sunday that the construction phase of the new aircraft has already been completed.

The commander said the new generation of Saeqeh is a twin-seat fighter jet, adding that the aircraft will be officially unveiled in the next Iranian year (will start on March 21).

“God willing, efforts are underway to have the operational flight of first twin-seat Saeqeh fighter jet on Farvardin 29 (April 18, 2014, also National Army Day),” Barkhor stated.

The twin-seat aircraft means that the fighter jet will have more power, mobility, navigation equipment, fire power, pay load and operational range.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

Azarakhsh (lightning) is Iran's first domestically-manufactured combat jet.

Saeqeh (Thunderbolt) fighter jet is a follow-up aircraft, derived from Azarakhsh. Iran unveiled its first squadron of Saeqeh fighter-bombers in an air show in 2010.

On February 2, Iran unveiled its latest fighter aircraft, the Qaher-313 (Conqueror-313). The single-seat stealth fighter jet can take off and land on short runways.

Tehran has repeatedly assured other nations that its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.

Iran modernizes U.S. surface-to-air missile system

Iran has modernized the U.S.-made surface-to-air missile system MIM-23 Hawk, Commander of Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base, Farzad Esmaili said, Iranian ISNA news agency reported on Feb. 3.

MIM-23 Hawk is a U.S. medium range surface-to-air missile. The Hawk was initially designed to destroy aircraft and was later adapted to destroy other missiles in flight. The missile was also produced outside the US in Western Europe, Japan and Iran.

Farzad Esmaili said that experts of the Khatam al-Anbia have modernized and optimized the system.

"The medium range of the system has been improved," Esmaili said. "The system's medium and high radar range has also been increased, while the low radar range has doubled."

Esmaili noted that the system's radar efficiency has increased by 40 percent, after optimization.

Esmaili also noted that the system has improved fire control system, as well as updated monitors and cooling mechanisms. He said the system was tested by local experts.

It should be noted that Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base has started using home-made simulators for Hawk and Skyguard air defense missile systems, Iran's IRNA news agency reported on Jan. 28.

Esmaili attended the inauguration ceremony held on Jan. 28 at the base's university.

In recent years, Iran has claimed it made great achievements in its defense sector and has attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.
Tehran established an arms development program during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s to counter the weapons embargo imposed on it by the U.S. and its Western allies.

Since 1992, Iran has manufactured its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, radars, boats, submarines and fighter planes. Iran also unveiled its first domestically-manufactured long-range Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in 2010.

Tehran has repeatedly assured other nations that its military might poses no threat to other countries since the Islamic Republic's defense doctrine is based entirely on deterrence. (Cihan/Trend az)

Iran: We've Developed a Missile 'Better than S-300'
Advanced missile would be used against aircraft and cruise missiles, says Tehran.

Iran continues to present technological achievements in the field of military industry. The Commander of the country's Air Defense Forces, Farzad Ismail, said that the missile "Bawer " (Faith) made in Iran, has reached the operational phase of development and that it features more advanced capabilities than the S-300 Russian-made missile.

The S-300 is a long range surface-to-air missile – manufactured by the Russian firm Almaz – designed to intercept aircraft and cruise missiles, and its most advanced models can also target ballistic missiles.

The corresponding missile in the West is the MIM-104 Patriot made in the United States.

At the end of the previous decade there was talk about Rusia's intention to sell the S-300 to Iran, but in 2010 a senior Russian source said that the transaction had been frozen.

Ismail noted that in response to the delay in the transfer of missiles from Russia to Iran, the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, instructed the Iranian Ministry of Defense to develop its own missile. The matter was handed over to the Air Defense Command, Khatam al Anbia, and a number of scientific and academic centers.

The second phase of the project, which has been going on for five years, focuses on radar, launchers and the missile itself. A model of the missile was presented in military parades in Tehran.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said his forces are working on three new destroyers, noting that they are the upgraded versions of Jamaran-class warships.
The new destroyers known as Jamaran-3, 4 and 5 are being manufactured by the Iranian experts, and will be unveiled respectively in the future, Sayyari told reporters in the northern port city of Anzali on Friday.
The Iranian Navy launched its first domestically-built destroyer, Jamaran, in the waters of the Persian Gulf in February 2010.
The 1,420-ton destroyer is equipped with modern radar systems and other electronic warfare capabilities and has a top speed of up to 30 knots and a helipad.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the commander touched on the Iranian naval forces’ missions in the high seas, saying the country’s naval fleets have escorted some 2,000 vessels in the oceans over the past 4 years to protect them against pirate attacks.
And earlier on Thursday, Sayyari announced that the Navy is enhancing the presence of its fleet in the international waters and high seas.
He had explained that the international waters belong to all countries and “we will boost our presence in the high seas day after day”.
This comes as Iranian Navy’s fleet of warships has entered the Atlantic Ocean for the first time this week and is moving towards the US maritime border.
Iranian Navy’s 29th fleet of warships departed for the Atlantic Ocean late in January in a bid to protect the country’s cargo ships and oil tankers in the high seas.
The fleet is planned to serve intelligence, combat and training purposes. It is comprised of Kharg logistic warship –capable of carrying helicopters—and Sabalan destroyer, and is scheduled to travel some 25,000 nautical kilometers on its journey towards the Atlantic Ocean within three months.
