- UK Army completes Exercise Bavarian Charger 2013
11 June 2013 British Army personnel from 20th Armoured Brigade have finished Exercise Bavarian Charger 2013, conducted in Germany, aimed at helping prepare for post-Afghanistan deployment contingency missions.
Involving participation from more than 2,000 troops and 750 vehicles, the three-phase exercise was the first of three large drills being carried out by the brigade this year to refresh their core skills having returned from Afghanistan in 2012.
The first phase featured comprehensive two-week live-firing manoeuvres on the training ranges of Grafenwohr, and culminated in a series of attacks with the combined firepower of Challenger main battle tanks, Warrior vehicles, Apache helicopters, infantry and artillery assets.
Carried out on ranges in Hohenfels, the second phase replicated the kind of challenges armed force will face while moving through a hostile environment, as well as providing an opportunity to evaluate the skills of 1 Logistic Support Regiment.
The third phase focused on the planning and execution of operations at battle group and company level.Commenting on the exercise, Headquarters 20th Armoured Brigade captain Strachan-Hayes said it marked the culmination of four or five months of training within the battle groups of the brigade that built individual soldiers' skills to platoon and company levels.
"We don't know what contingency will look like, the future of operations might be very different so we have to look at a broad spectrum of capabilities," Hayes said.
"This exercise has focused on the worst case scenario; how we might attack or defend against a force that is of parity, integrating the all arms concept with the aviation assets, and transitioning from offensive operations into security operations where we would be required to protect the local nationals and reassure the population."
The exercise also tested the 5th Battalion The Rifles (5 RIFLES) and Queen's Dragoon Guards Battle Groups on tactics that involved sweeping across the battlefield in armoured vehicles prior to switching to peace support operations needing a more subtle and tempered approach.

First RAF students ace Hawk T2 course
The first four Royal Air Force student pilots to fly the service's BAE Systems Hawk T2 advanced jet trainer under the UK Military Flying Training System (MFTS) programme graduated at RAF Valley in north Wales on 12 June. Lasting roughly 11 months, the lead advanced fast jet trainer course comprised around 120 live flying hours and a similar number delivered using synthetic training devices, the RAF says. The students' instruction culminated with a sortie simulating the delivery of a precision-guided bomb in a scenario involving surface-to-air missile threats and enemy fighters, it adds.

The increased use of synthetic training via MFTS, "has unlocked the potential to improve efficiency and lower costs," says Jim Keeler, managing director of Lockheed Martin/Babcock joint venture Ascent Flight Training - the Ministry of Defence's training system partner for the project. A second course, with four RAF and two Royal Navy student pilots, is due to conclude in August 2013.

Royal Navy gets Eagle eyes in £30m deal for unmanned planes
20/06/2013 The Royal Navy is to get its first unmanned ‘eye in the sky’ in a £30m deal to buy the ScanEagle reconnaissance aircraft. The pilotless plane has been used by the US Navy over the past decade and has been trialled by the Royal Navy. - Citation :
- Its ability to deploy during the day and night coupled with the technology it uses, will give commanders a clearer picture of the operational situation whenever it’s required.
Mr Philip Dunne
Royal Navy warships are to get their first ‘eye in the sky’ pilotless reconnaissance aircraft in a £30m deal. Whitehall is investing in the small, unarmed ScanEagle robot planes which can be launched from the flight decks of Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels day or night to gather intelligence and survey the wider area of operations. The aircraft has been used extensively by the Americans for the past decade – and was trialled aboard frigate HMS Sutherland back in 2006. Now the MOD is buying the small plane to complement the existing intelligence, surveillance and econnaissance assets used on Royal Navy operations such as helicopters and long-range radar. The small drone – the official military terminology is Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, or UAV – has a wingspan of just over three metres (10ft) and weighs 22kg (48lbs) and is launched from a pneumatic catapult. Flying at about 60 knots, it is piloted by a specialist team on board the ship who will plan the ScanEagle’s missions, control its flights and monitor and analyse the information it gathers using its state of the art sensors, including a video or infra red camera, beaming back ‘real-time’ high resolution images via a satellite link.
It stays airborne around for 15 to 18 hours at distances upwards of 70 miles from the ship. Once its flight is over it returns to the mother ship where it’s caught by dangling a rope vertically, which catches in a hook at either end of each wing. The aircraft is grappled by a recovery device and lifted back on board. “ScanEagle represents an important addition to the Royal Navy’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capability,” said Capt Ian Annett, who’s been involved with the project. “Its ability to deploy during the day and night coupled with the technology it uses, will give commanders a clearer picture of the operational situation whenever it’s required." Minister for Defence, Equipment, Support and Technology, Philip Dunne, added: “ScanEagle provides the Royal Navy with proven surveillance capability that has already been used on operations by other nations, so we know we are getting top quality equipment. The technology is off-the-shelf and will be available to the Royal Navy as soon as possible. “Our continued investment in Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance systems is essential to keeping our Armed Forces up to date with the latest capabilities and this will be a central part of the MoD's investment in new equipment over the next 10 years.”

- U.K. Typhoons Get Emergency Clearance To Refuel From Voyager
June 24, 2013
LONDON — The U.K. Royal Air Force (RAF) has given an emergency clearance for its Eurofighter Typhoon to refuel from the country’s new Airbus A330 Voyager multi-role tanker transport aircraft. The unusual decision is understood to have been made about two weeks ago, and will allow Typhoons to refuel from the Voyagers despite the fact that the U.K. Military Aviation Authority (MAA), the certification agency that normally approves such clearances, has not yet given the aircraft combination a Release to Service notice. According to the U.K. defense ministry, the Typhoons have been given an Operational Emergency Clearance (OEC) by the MAA. Authority documentation states that an OEC is given when: “operations may require the clearance of equipment and material at short notice and where the operating risk is greater than that normally acceptable.” Defense officials told Aviation Week that the OEC provides the RAF with the “flexibility” to use its fleets in the most effective way, “should the need arise.” The nature of that need is not clear but could be related to the provision of a tanker for the Quick Reaction Alert role—Typhoons on ground alert to meet or intercept suspect aircraft. Among the most recent of these was a launch to escort a Pakistan Boeing 777 on May 24. When the Typhoons are dispatched, a tanker is also launched—usually one of the RAF’s aging Vickers VC-10s in case the fighter aircraft need extra endurance. Recent poor dispatch rates on the VC-10 may have prompted commanders to consider a Voyager aircraft instead. The RAF and AirTanker, the private company that owns and operates the Voyagers on the RAF’s behalf, are hopeful that the release to service documents for the Typhoon will be finalized “very soon.” In May, Airtanker was cleared to begin air-to-air refueling with the Panavia Tornado GR4. The first mission was launched on May 20. Until that time AirTanker’s Voyagers have only been cleared to operate in the strategic air transport role flying troops and cargo. The aircraft also are cleared to carry out medevac missions. AirTanker is not due to take on the refueling role in its entirety for another year, in May 2014, although clearances to begin air-to-air refueling had been expected much earlier. However, military certification authorities had been unhappy with the flight characteristics of the Cobham-designed High Speed-Variable Drag Drogue originally fitted to the hoses of the Voyager. These were changed back to the standard Sergeant-Fletcher-designed drogue currently fitted to the VC-10 and Tristars as well as to tankers from other

- Third UK F-35B arrives at Eglin AFB
The UK's third Lockheed Martin F-35B short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) Joint Strike Fighter arrived at Eglin AFB, Florida, on 25 June. The British aircraft was flown in from Lockheed's Fort Worth, Texas, plant by US Marine Corps pilot Lt Col Roger Hardy on a flight that lasted 90min. "In less than a year, we have taken ownership of our first three aircraft and begun both pilot and engineer training," says Royal Air Force Group Captain Harv Smyth, the senior UK officer at Eglin AFB. "Today's arrival of BK-3 is the latest step in delivering the F-35's unprecedented capability to UK defence." This particular aircraft, BK-3 (ZM137), is the last of three UK F-35Bs currently on order, but the country is expected to have a fleet of 48 aircraft in service before 2020. Those 48 jets are expected operate from both land bases and from the UK's new Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. The three current UK aircraft are operating in a training capacity as part of the USMC's VMFAT-501 squadron at Eglin AFB. However, the aircraft will eventually move to Edwards AFB, California, to participate in the F-35's operational evaluations.

- Briggs secures UK MoD's mechanical handling equipment contract
28 June 2013 Briggs Equipment has secured a contract for delivery, management and maintenance of the UK Ministry of Defence's (MoD) mixed fleet of mechanical handling equipment.
Awarded following a comprehensive tender process, the £87m contract primarily involves the replacement of 1,046 assets as part of a proposed capital investment of approximately £31.5m in the next seven years.
Around 84% of total assets are expected to be sourced in the country, providing a major boost to the domestic industry.
As well as forklifts, tractors, trailers, side loaders and container handlers, the contract also includes high-performance warehousing equipment and other products from 23 different manufacturers.
Briggs Equipment CEO Richard Close said the contract demonstrated the company's ability to efficiently respond to the MoD's changing requirements.
Briggs strategic development director Gary Clements said: "A significant volume of the equipment will be manufactured by NACCO Materials Handling Group, which has supplied the MoD with Hyster equipment for the last 40 years."
Over the course of the contract, the company will collaborate with the MoD to help drive further efficiencies as it restructures the armed forces.
In addition to supply and sustainment of the equipment, a customised management information portal has been developed by the company for effective fleet management within a military environment.
During tender process, Briggs successfully demonstrated its ability to sustain 3,000 assets throughout 302 locations both at home and 13 countries worldwide, as well as the Royal fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessels.
Further contract details were discussed by UK Defence Equipment, Support and Technology Minister Philip Dunne during the recent Defence Vehicle Dynamics (DVD) 2013 exhibition in Bedford, UK.

- RAF Lossiemouth Tornado squadron grounded over staff shortages
RAF Tornado at Lossiemouth The RAF Lossiemouth squadron was grounded last October
The Ministry of Defence is being urged to re-think redundancies after it emerged a Lossiemouth RAF Tornado squadron was grounded due to staff shortages.
The decision - involving 13 of the jets - was taken for a period of three days last October.
Extra ground staff were moved to Lossiemouth from other RAF stations to plug the gap.
The RAF said the decision proved the highest priority was flight safety.
Angus Robertson, the Moray MP and SNP defence spokesman, said defence cuts had to be re-thought. http://www.bbc.co.uk

- Minister for Defence Materiel – BAE Systems UK awarded contract for fast jet trainer upgrade
8 July 2013
Minister for Defence Materiel Dr Mike Kelly AM MP today announced that BAE Systems UK has been awarded a contract to upgrade the Lead-In Fighter Hawk fleet.
Dr Kelly said as the manufacturer of the original Hawk aircraft, BAE Systems UK, will conduct the multi-million dollar upgrade.
“This upgrade is based on a later version of the aircraft developed for the UK Ministry of Defence,” Dr Kelly said.
Both BAE Systems UK and BAE Systems Australia have been working closely with Defence to define the scope of the upgrade, leveraging off previous Hawk development programs.
“Australian industry will also be engaged, ensuring compatibility with the current Lead-In Fighter training capability, construction of simulator facilities, modification of the Hawk Fleet, and in-service support of equipment.”
Dr Kelly said upgrading the fast jet training system will ensure its effectiveness into the next decade.
“This provides a solid foundation for the progression of aircrew onto the F/A-18 Classic and Super Hornets and the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) when it is introduced into service,” Dr Kelly said. http://www.minister.defence.gov.au

- UK to train 2,000 Libyan military personnel, Hague confirms
10 July 2013
The UK Armed Forces will train up to 2,000 Libyan military personnel in basic infantry and junior leadership skills later this year, foreign secretary William Hague has confirmed.
In a written response to the Parliament, Hague said the training would be carried out at Bassingbourn Barracks in Cambridgeshire, to professionalise Libyan soldiers and also help them achieve peace and stability across the country.
"The government firmly believes that a stable, open and democratic Libya contributing to wider regional stability and security is in the UK's interest," Hague said.
"That is why we are working closely with the US and other European countries to lead the broader international effort, co-ordinated by the UN Support Mission in Libya, to support Libya's democratic transition and the Libyan authorities' efforts to make visible improvements in public security in Libya."
UK defence secretary Philip Hammond added: "The UK provides world-class defence training and education to many countries, creating lasting ties between our armed forces and enhancing their ability to work together towards regional security and stability." The courses are estimated to run for at least ten weeks, and the trainees will arrive in a number of small groups following full vetting by the Libyan Government, with checks on their medical, physical and behavioural suitability.
Funded by the Libyan Government, the training forms part of a defence and security assistance package developed by Britain in collaboration with the US, France and Italy to support Libya's democratic transition.
As part of the package, UK Prime Minister David Cameron offered to train around 7,000 Libyan soldiers along with other G8 nations during last month's G8 Summit in Northern Ireland, UK.
In addition, Britain is planning to support Libya in security domain, creation of accountable and human rights-compliant security and justice structure, transparent and effective financial management, strengthening private sector development and economic governance systems

- Dambusters to get new F-35 Lightning II fighter
The renowned Dambusters will become the first RAF squadron to get Britain’s new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, head of the RAF, will today announce the famous 617 Squadron will become the first to fly the F-35 stealth fighter known as the Lightning II.
The decision secures the future of the world-famous squadron when it stops flying its ageing Tornado GR4 jets next year.
The Dambusters, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, were formed in 1943 and entered history the same year by breaching the Mohne and Eder dams using a specially developed bouncing bomb.
Eight aircraft and their crews were lost in the perilous raid, but it was credited with causing severe damage to Germany’s industrial heartland.
In 1944, the squadron also took part in the bombing raid which sank the German battleship the Admiral von Tirpitz.
More recently the squadron has flown in Iraq and Afghanistan.
An MoD source said: “The Dambusters have a strong heritage and special place in the nation’s history.
“It’s fitting that an RAF squadron that played such a key role in the Second World War is to fulfil a leading role in the future of Britain’s airpower with this state of the art stealth combat jet.”
The squadron will get between 12 and 16 aircraft in 2016 and be based at RAF Marham in Norfolk. From 2018 it will also fly from the Navy’s new Queen Elizabeth class carriers.
The Navy will get the second squadron of Joint Strike Fighters.
Britain has agreed to buy at least 48 of the fighters, which are priced at around £71 million each, and has already taken delivery of three test jets. The Ministry of Defence has said it is waiting to decide whether to order another 90 as originally planned.

- Airbus Military steps up C295 MPA offer to UK
The UK's lack of a dedicated maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) fleet is continuing to draw the attention of companies eyeing a potential need to acquire successors for the Royal Air Force's British Aerospace Nimrod MR2s, the last of which were retired from use in March 2010.
Industry sources say a UK air ISTAR [intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance] optimisation study is set to soon enter a second phase, following an analysis of initial engagement between potential bidders and the Ministry of Defence. If progressed, this could lead to the latter seeking to establish a funding line by April 2014 to conduct work leading to a possible future purchase.
Several senior RAF officers were given a tour of a Portuguese air force Airbus Military C295 multimission aircraft at the 20-21 July Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at Fairford in Gloucestershire. Operated by the service's 502 Sqn from Montijo air base, the adapted transport was on static display in its MPA configuration, which includes onboard operator workstations, an electro-optical infrared camera and a maritime search radar.
Portugal operates 12 C295s, with five equipped with the pallet-based MPA fit at any one time. This configuration includes fuselage-mounted side-looking airborne radar sensors, used for tasks including pollution detection.
"We have a 200-mile [range] radar which can track up to 1,000 targets," says 502 Sqn commanding officer Lt Col Pedro Bernardino. Other roles undertaken by the unit in four years of operating the C295 have included troop transport, supporting long-range search and rescue operations involving the Portuguese air force's AgustaWestland AW101 helicopters, and acting as a command and control platform during aerial firefighting activities, he says.
Airbus Military has already discussed potential co-operation with local equipment suppliers for a potential UK competition, says Gary Soul, head of strategy and business development at EADS UK. The company, which he says "has a slick solution, with some winning ideas", displayed a model of a torpedo-equipped C295 in RAF markings in its chalet at RIAT. The manufacturer has already cleared a similar combination for the Chilean navy, and recently performed airborne separation tests using MBDA's Marte Mk2 anti-ship missile. Other possible candidates for a potential UK multimission/MPA requirement would include the Boeing 737-based P-8 and a so-called Swordfish offering based on the Saab 2000. The Swedish company brought an unmodified example of its out-of-production regional airliner to RIAT, using it to fly in senior executives including chief executive Håkan Buskhe.
Following its retirement of the Nimrod MR2 and cancellation of the planned replacement Nimrod MRA4 in late 2010, the MoD is sustaining a so-called "seedcorn" initiative aimed at maintaining personnel experience on dedicated MPA assets flown by allies Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA.
The MoD planned to spend £3.8 million ($5.8 million) during the 2012-13 financial year on the seedcorn activity, with this involving 34 RAF personnel, according to information released in April. http://www.flightglobal.com

- Royal Navy's sixth Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) keel laid
The UK’s submarine capability has taken a significant step forward today with work beginning on the assembly of Agamemnon, the Royal Navy’s sixth Astute Class submarine. The keel, which is the first part of the boat to be built, was unveiled at a ceremony at BAE Systems’ shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness by Defence Minister Philip Dunne.
It comes as the MoD announces that the first two of the seven Astute Class submarines, HMS Astute and HMS Ambush, are nearing completion of their extensive sea trials and have been handed over to the Royal Navy to begin to prepare for operations.
The seven Astute Class submarines are being built for the Royal Navy to replace the Trafalgar Class submarines.
The Astute Class has greater firepower, state of the art communications equipment and advanced stealth technology making them quieter than their predecessors and harder to detect.
HMS Astute and HMS Ambush are the first submarines in Class accepted by Navy Command, which is responsible for operating all of the Royal Navy’s vessels.
The next three submarines in the Class: Artful, Audacious and Anson are all at varying stages of build and today’s keel laying for Agamemnon marks the next key milestone for the programme.
BAE Systems Maritime Submarines (BAES (MS)) is responsible for delivering all seven Astute Class submarines and for the design of the successor to the Vanguard class, which will carry the UK’s nuclear deterrent.
The MoD has agreed a new contract with BAES (MS) that will not only help to sustain the thousands of highly skilled defence jobs based at Barrow-in-Furness but drive down the costs of building future submarines. http://www.navyrecognition.com

- Royal Navy gets Merlin Mk2 helicopters
23 July 2013
Five upgraded Merlin helicopters featuring a range of advancements have been handed over to the Royal Navy, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
A total of 30 Fleet Air Arm helicopters are being upgraded under a £750m deal with Lockheed Martin.
The Merlin Mk2 is said to represent the next-generation of anti-submarine maritime patrol helicopters, with improvements also set to enable the helicopters to carry out counter-piracy and casualty-evacuation duties.
The upgraded Mk1 aircraft have been fitted with advanced glass cockpits, improved avionics and consoles, touch screen displays and an improved ability to share data with other aircraft and ships and to detect and track targets.
After undergoing extensive trials the first helicopters are expected to be ready to deploy by the summer of 2014.
Commander Ben Franklin, commanding officer of the Merlin Helicopter Force, said: "The delivery of the first five aircraft to the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm is a real milestone of this successful programme, which will provide vital support to the navy as it fulfils its role in protecting UK interests across the globe."
Commodore Andy Lison, responsible for the Merlin, Lynx and Sea King teams in MOD's procurement body Defence Equipment and Support added: "I am delighted that we are now firmly in the delivery phase of the project. The Merlin Mk2 is a truly exceptional aircraft and the programme to develop and build this aircraft has brought together the very best of MoD and defence industry to future-proof this vital capability for defence." http://www.defencemanagement.com

- Bristow Group Sign Contract for 11 AW189 Helicopters for UK Search & Rescue
(Source: AgustaWestland; issued July 23, 2013) At a ceremony held in London on 18th July, AgustaWestland and Bristow Group signed a contract for 11 AW189 Search & Rescue (SAR) helicopters that will be used to deliver SAR services in and around the UK.
The contract was signed by Mike Imlach, Director of European Operations, Bristow Group and Geoff Hoon, Managing Director International Business, AgustaWestland, in the presence of Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport.
In addition to the aircraft, AgustaWestland will provide related training, maintenance and support services.
The 11 AW189s will be built at AgustaWestland’s Yeovil facility and operated by Bristow in the UK, with a phased introduction to service between 2015 and 2017. The overall programme value to AgustaWestland, which was announced in March 2013, is in excess of €275 million.
Bristow Helicopters Ltd. was awarded a contract by the UK Department for Transport in March 2013 to provide SAR services to the UK for 10 years and selected the AW189 SAR variant as one of the central platforms for the UK SAR programme.
Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport, said “This deal will not only ensure that the UK is served by a new generation of state-of-the-art search and rescue helicopters but will also provide a welcome boost to Britain’s world-class aerospace industry. This is good news for those who rely on our search and rescue helicopters and good news for British manufacturing.”
Daniele Romiti, Chief Executive Officer, AgustaWestland commented “We are delighted to sign this contract today with Bristow who has a long and proud history of providing life-saving SAR services. The selection of the AW189 for this prestigious SAR contract, after extensive evaluations of competing types, confirms that the aircraft is ideally suited to conduct this demanding role and we are confident that this success will lead to further success for the AW189 in the SAR role around the world.”
Mike Imlach, Director of European Operations, Bristow Group, added “Bristow Helicopters Limited is excited to be working in partnership with AgustaWestland on the development and supply of the new technology AW189 to the UK Government. The aircraft has great potential and will be a tremendous addition to the Bristow Group Search and Rescue aircraft fleet and the fact that it will be assembled in Yeovil will help the UK economy further.”
The AW189, the latest helicopter produced and equipped by AgustaWestland to undertake SAR missions, builds on the Company’s heritage and expertise in search and rescue both in the UK and abroad. The iconic Westland Sea King, which has been operational for over 30 years, is currently flying the majority of Search and Rescue missions in the UK alongside the AW139 which is undertaking the same role, primarily on Britain’s south coast, for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.
Since its launch in June 2011, the AW189 has become the outright market leader in the 8 tonne class with over 80 orders and options placed by many of the world's leading operators. The AW189 SAR helicopter is part of AgustaWestland’s family of new generation helicopters that also includes the AW169 and AW139, the best-selling helicopter in its class with over 720 aircraft ordered in 60 countries.
These helicopters all possess the same high-performance flight characteristics and safety features whilst sharing the same common cockpit concept and design philosophy. This approach facilitates synergies for operators of these models in areas such as training, maintenance and support.
Bristow is a long-standing customer of AgustaWestland with the AW139 already in service and the AW189 on order for offshore oil and gas transport operations. It was one of the first operators to order the all new AW189 helicopter.

- Third British soldier dies after SAS training session in Welsh Brecon Beacons
Updated Wed Jul 31, 2013 10:16am AEST Map: Wales
A third British soldier taken ill earlier this month during a gruelling training exercise for entry into the elite Special Air Service (SAS) regiment has died, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.
The two other soldiers, Edward Maher, 31, and Craig Roberts, 24, died after temperatures reached 29.5 degrees Celsius during the training exercise on July 13 in the Brecon Beacons mountain range in south Wales.
The men were members of the Territorial Army, Britain's reservist force, and were hoping to join the SAS.
British defence secretary Philip Hammond has announced a full inquiry into the incident.
"It is with great sadness that we can confirm that a third army reserve soldier injured during a training exercise in the Brecon Beacons has died of his injuries," the MoD said in a statement.
"The family have asked for a period of grace before he is named and request that this is respected by the media."
The Brecon Beacons offer some of Britain's most rugged terrain, and the mountain range is regularly used for military training exercises.

- RAF tornado forced to make emergency landing after bird strike
A Tornado jet has had to make an emergency landing at a Scottish airport after a bird strike.
The GR4 aircraft from Norfolk's RAF Marham landed at Prestwick Airport, Ayrshire, following the incident shortly after 10.30pm yesterday.
The two-person jet, which was on a training mission, was still at the airport this afternoon, being checked over by engineers.
It is not yet known if it suffered any damage as a result of the incident.
An RAF spokesman said: "The two-seater aircraft was on a standard training mission in Scotland.
"It had a bird strike. The crew were aware of it and they made a precautionary landing into Prestwick.
"The aircraft is still there and it's awaiting engineering assistance before recovery."
It is not clear how long the jet will remain at the airport, the spokesman added.
He said the aircraft, carrying a pilot and a weapons systems operator, would have been in the vicinity of Prestwick when the crew made the decision to divert to the airport.
"It landed safely and both crew are fine," he added.
Prestwick Airport said its emergency procedures swung into action after it was made aware of the plan to land the jet.
A spokesman said: "An RAF Tornado experienced a bird strike and declared mayday at 10.36pm last night.
"Prestwick declared emergency so all the emergency services were there to await the aircraft, which arrived 10 minutes later.
"It landed safely at 10.46pm. The emergency was called off, and everyone stood down, at 11pm precisely."
