"Jieyang", tenth Type 056 Corvette (Jiangdao class), commissioned in Chinese Navy (PLAN)
A commissioning, naming and flag-presenting ceremony of the new "Jieyang" corvette (locally designated guided missile frigate) of the Chinese Navy (PLAN) was held on the morning of January 26, 2014 at a naval port in Shantou of south China’s Guangdong province, marking that the ship is officially commissioned to the South China Sea Fleet of the PLAN.
"Jieyang" is the Tenth Type 056 Corvette (Jiangdao class). The ship was launched exactly one year ago at the Huangpu Shipyard in Guangzhou on January 26, 2013, it is the third unit of the class built in Guangzhou, and the 2nd Type 056 corvette commissioned in 2014.
The PLAN now has 10 Type 056 corvettes in service: 2 with the North Fleet, 3 with East Fleet and 5 with the South Fleet.
According to a Chinese MOD statement, the “Jieyang” ship (hull number 587) is a new-generation light guided missile frigate independently developed by China. It has a length of 88.9 meters, a beam of 11.14 meters and a full-load displacement of over 1,300 tons.
The “Jieyang” ship adopts advanced designs, uses cutting-edge technologies, integrates many types of weaponry and equipment, and features high integration and informatization, good stealth performance and strong electromagnetic compatibility.
After its commissioning to a maritime garrison command under the South China Sea Fleet of the PLAN, the warship is mainly responsible for such missions as patrol, alert, escort, anti-submarine and anti-ship operations and so forth.

PLAN inducts minesweeper into North Sea fleet
The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) commissioned its latest Wochi-class (Type 081A) mine countermeasures vessel, Qingzhou , on 26 January. The boat was handed over in a naming and flag presentation ceremony held at the naval port in Dalian, Liaoning province. The Wochi class is a new type of mine countermeasures vessel that bears some resemblance to the T43-class (Type 6610), albeit around 5 m longer. Boats in the class are armed with two 37 mm 62.8 calibre Type 76 guns. According to a report by the PLA-sponsored China Military Online, Qingzhou will be inducted into the North Sea fleet to assume coastal defence duties off northeast China.

The Type 056 corvette: China's new anti-sub weapon of choice
While most Western military experts have focused their attention on the production of the Shenyang J-15, China's first carrier-based fighter, and the launch of larger surface combat vessels including two Type 054A frigates and one Type 052D destroyer, the official website of the People's Liberation Army Navy said that the Type 056 Jiangdao-class corvette is in fact the class of ship of which the nation produced the most in 2013.
The Beijing-based Sina Military Network said ten Type 056 Jiangdao-class corvettes had been launched this year to replace the older Type 037 submarine chasers. Mounted with two triple torpedo tubes, the Type 056 is designed to conduct anti-submarine operations within China's exclusive economic zone. Combined with SJG-206 low frequency towed array sonar, the Type 056 is capable of directing anti-submarine helicopters against enemy submarines.
Currently, the Type 056 incorporates a helipad at the stern for a light helicopter. The Sina Military Network stated that the Russian-built Kamov Ka-28 anti-submarine helicopter will be chosen to serve with the corvette in the near future. The Ka-28 helicopter is able to detect submarines at a depth of 500 meters and at running at speeds up to 75 kilometers per hour. However, only the Harbin Z-9E helicopter can be operated from the helipad of the Type 056 before the organic helicopter support facility is mounted aboard the vessel.
The Z-9E helicopter is unable to carry as much anti-submarine weaponry and equipment as the Ka-28, according to the website. The Ka-28 can be armed with one 533 millimeter homing torpedo, one torpedo rocket, ten PLAB 250-120 bombs and two OMAB-25-12D bombs. Unlike the Ka-28, which can detect enemy submarine with its own VGS-3 dipping sonar, the Z-9E cannot carry sonar and weapons simultaneously. For this reason, two helicopters, one for detecting and the other for striking must be dispatched for anti-submarine missions.
The Sina Military Network suggested that the V750 unmanned helicopter designed by Weifang Tianxiang Aerospace Industry Company may be a better choice to operate alongside the Z-9E aboard the Type 056 because the helipad cannot carry two manned helicopters. With a range of 500 km and a speed of 161 km/h, the V750 can increase the combat capability of the Type 56 by two in combination with the Z-9E. Since the V750 cannot carry 324 mm torpedoes due to its small size, and its primary mission is to locate enemy submarines.
Designed as a part of the PLA Navy's anti-submarine warfare system, Sina Military Network said Type 056 corvettes are not likely to be used in independent operations. Instead, they will be used with support from other vessels such as Type 054A frigates or other surface vessels. After the launch of the first Type 056 vessel in 2012, the Bangladesh Navy has already purchased two ships from China. The Royal Thai Navy and the Nigerian Navy are also potential buyers of the Type 056s.

Chinese AEW&C aircraft effective for mission over E China Sea
Since the establishment of the East China Sea air defense identification zone (ADIZ), the Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C) has constantly been a subject of public discussion.
A recent report about the first PLA AEW&C aircraft fleet captured immediate attention from both at home and abroad after being published. In an interview with China Central Television, Du Wenlong, a Chinese military expert, said that with the AEW&C aircraft, China can efficiently contain reconnaissance made by foreign forces.
It is reported that all-day-long incessant patrols have been carried out in the past few days by the AEW&C aircraft force to monitor the ADIZ in the East China Sea. In the future, the system will directly command an air combat cluster including fighters, bombers and tankers in coordination with the ground forces.
According to Du, the Chinese AEW&C aircraft are capable of accurately monitoring, identifying, tracking and warning different types of foreign military aircraft that enter the ADIZ. Any reconnaissance or surveillance operations targeted at China can be detected by the system, and when necessary, the system can guide fighters to intercept malicious intruders efficiently.

Xi Jinping told Liaoning's captain to get aircraft carrier ship-shape soon
"[You should] build up [the carrier's] combat readiness, logistics and support expeditiously," Xi told Captain Zhang Zheng before wrapping up his inspection of the Liaoning, according to an account in this month's issue of Dangjian (Party Construction) magazine.
The Liaoning, originally the Soviet Admiral Kuznetsov class carrier Varyag, was sold to China in 1998 after it was stripped of all weapons and engines. It underwent years of refitting and was handed over to the Chinese navy in September 2012 as an "aircraft carrier training platform".
In November it sailed for the first time in battle formation with warships in the South China Sea.
In December, two of the Liaoning's escort ships confronted the USS Cowpens during a carrier group exercise in nearby waters in an incident that the Pentagon described as a near-collision. The US State Department raised the matter with Beijing.
Zhang said that Xi, who is also chairman of the Central Military Commission, paid attention to details of the carrier's weapons and equipment, and was particularly keen about the ship's preparations for combat readiness, according to the magazine published by the Central Publicity Department.
Analysts at the time said Xi's inspection was designed to send a strong message to regional rivals, who were also strengthening their own navies.
But some Chinese defence researchers noted that the country would need at least three carrier battle groups to defend its national interests at sea, and that would be unlikely to happen before 2020 due to China's lack of shipbuilding capability and other technical reasons.
Wang Min, the Communist Party chief of Liaoning province, was reported as saying last month that a second aircraft carrier was being built in Dalian .

New Chinese submarine patrol puts Hawaii, Alaska within nuke range - report
The Chinese are preparing to deploy submarines armed with nuclear missiles that will patrol the northern Pacific Ocean and come within range of at least two US states, according to a new report from the US Navy.
The US Naval Institute (USNI) reported that the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has tapped the Jin-class nuclear ballistic submarines to begin patrols in 2014. The subs will carry intercontinental range missiles that are thought to have a range of no less than 14,000 kilometers (8,699 miles) and can deliver a single or multiple warheads.
“With a range in excess of 4,000 [nautical miles], the JL-2 submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM), will enable the JIN to strike Hawaii, Alaska and possibly western portions of CONUS from East Asian waters,” Office of Naval Intelligence Officer Jesse Karotkin wrote in his testimony last month to the US China Economic Security Review Commission.
The new Jin-class Type 094 submarines are a technological marvel when compared to the Type 092 class that the PLAN has traditionally relied upon. Weighing 11,000 tons when fully submerged, the Navy sees this development as proof that the Chinese “want to get more on par with Western countries.”
“The three JIN [ballistic missile submarines] currently in service would be insufficient to maintain a constant at-sea presence for extended periods of time, but if the PLA Navy builds five units as some sources suggest, a continuous peacetime presence may become a viable option for the PLAN,” Karotkin noted.
Karotkin explained in his report that a number of factors have forced China to modernize its Navy, which now has more than 60 submarines, 55 medium and large amphibious ships, roughly 77 principal surface ships, and nearly 100 other small craft.
“At the dawn of the 21st Century, the People’s Liberation Army Navy remained a largely littoral force. Though China’s maritime interests were rapidly changing, the vast majority of its naval platforms offered very limited capability and endurance, particularly in blue water. Over the past 15 years the PLAN has carried out an ambitious modernization effort, resulting in a more technologically advanced and flexible force,” he wrote, as quoted by USNI.org.
“This transformation is evident not only in the PLAN’s gulf of Aden counter-piracy presence, which is now in its sixth year, but also in the navy’s more advanced regional operations and exercises. In contrast to its narrow focus a decade ago, the PLAN is evolving to meet a wide range of missions including conflict with Taiwan, enforcement of maritime claims, protection of economic interests, as well as counter-piracy and humanitarian missions.”
China also proved it has updated other military forces last month when, according to the Pentagon, the PLAN flight-tested a hypersonic missile delivery vehicle capable of penetrating any existing defense system with nuclear warheads. The weapon is one that experts have hailed as a game-changer for its ability to hit a target with a nuclear warhead before defense systems can react.
The Pentagon confirmed to the Washington Free Beacon that the test flight had taken place but offered no further explanation. The US is the only country in the world known to have such a weapon in its arsenal.
“We routinely monitor foreign defense activities and we are aware of the test,” a spokesman said.

China Expands ‘Flanker’ Family
While much of the world’s media attention is focused on China’s indigenous fighter programs, such as the J-10, J-20 and J-21/31, Shenyang continues to develop the “Flanker” series that has been in PLAAF (People’s Liberation Army Air Force) service since 1992. The latest versions to go into production are the J-15 carrier-borne fighter, and the J-16 multirole attack aircraft.
Fighter Flankers
China began its association with the Sukhoi Flanker in 1992, when the country became the first outside the former Soviet states to acquire the heavy fighter. Three batches of Su-27SK single-seaters and Su-27UBK two-seaters were acquired directly from Russia, and they initiated a major transformation of China’s air defense capability.
Based on this experience, China negotiated a license to manufacture the Su-27SK at Shenyang. Finalized in 1996, the contract covered 200 aircraft, beginning with the assembly of kits supplied from Russia and moving to increased Chinese production. Known as the J-11, the Shenyang-assembled Flanker suffered from quality control issues, and production ended after only 105 had been produced. They included a number of J-11As with some cockpit and weapon upgrades.
As Shenyang and the collocated 601 Institute gained more experience in building the aircraft, the facilities began to develop an “indigenized” version, the J-11B. Eager to free itself of dependence on Moscow, Chinese industry developed a number of key components that would allow the construction of aircraft without Russian supplies, and also allow them to use weaponry of Chinese origin.
By far the most important new component was the Shenyang Liming WS-10A Taihang engine to replace the Saturn AL-31F. A single flight-test article flew in a J-11WS testbed in 2002, and in 2004 the first true J-11B prototype flew for the first time, with two WS-10As. Production of the J-11B got under way with Chinese engines, but ongoing reliability problems forced subsequent aircraft to return to the AL-31F. Now it seems those issues with the WS-10A have been overcome and production J-11Bs are entering service with the Chinese powerplant. Late last year photos appeared of J-11Bs with a different style of nozzle, suggesting further improvements to the WS-10A.
As well as new engines, the J-11B sports a Chinese multi-function radar, infrared search-and-track turret and a databus that allows the carriage and delivery of range of Chinese weapons, including the PL-12 active-radar air-to-air missile. The cockpit also uses Chinese components, providing modern workplace with five multi-function displays.
J-11Bs entered PLAAF service toward the end of 2007 and their numbers have grown considerably since then. In early 2010 the Chinese naval air arm (PLANAF) began to receive J-11Bs for shore-based fighter operations. To partner the single-seat J-11B, Shenyang has also developed a “homegrown” two-seater designated J-11BS. This aircraft first flew in 2007, and entered service with both the PLAAF and PLANAF in 2010.
Flying Shark
Just as the Soviet Union turned to a navalized version of the Flanker (Su-33) to meet its initial carrier-borne fighter needs, so China turned to the Sukhoi design when developing an aircraft to equip its new carrier, Liaoning. In fact, China acquired an Su-33 prototype from Ukraine to assist in the development of its own carrier fighter.
Designated J-15 and named the Flying Shark, China’s carrier-borne Flanker is very similar to the Su-33 in terms of airframe and aircraft systems but with greater use of composite material to keep weight down. In terms of mission equipment, it draws heavily on the indigenous systems developed for the J-11B. It has a similar radar, although it is thought to have expanded modes for its maritime mission. It has the J-11B’s indigenous missile approach warning system and a modern, five-screen cockpit.
In terms of weaponry, the J-15 is armed with a wide range of precision armament for both air-to-air and air-to-surface tasks, including anti-ship missiles. An unusual feature is the ability to carry a buddy-buddy refueling pod on the centerline, allowing a J-15 to top up other aircraft during long-range missions with heavy weapon loads. The pod appears to be identical to the Russian UPAZ-1A pod, and may have been imported or copied.
As with the J-11B, the J-15 has suffered from the inability of Chinese industry to come up with a reliable powerplant. The intended engine is the WS-10H, a navalized version of the WS-10A with increased thrust to improve takeoff performance from the Liaoning’s ski-jump deck. However, only two of the prototypes have been seen with WS-10H engines, while at least five are powered by Russian AL-31Fs.
A prototype with AL-31F engines made the J-15’s first flight in August 2009, and by May the following year the first takeoffs were being made from a land-based dummy ski-jump. Carrier trials began late last year, the first official takeoffs and landings being conducted by two prototypes on November 23. From photos seen in December it is apparent that the first production machines are emerging from the Shenyang facility, powered by Russian engines.
Meanwhile, Shenyang is also working on a two-seater, possibly designated J-15S. A prototype with WS-10A engines made a first flight in November 2012. Although most likely intended for initial use as a trainer, the J-15S could also find a combat role as an attack and electronic warfare platform.
Attack Flankers
Impressed with its initial batches of Su-27s in the air defense role, China also looked to the big Sukhoi to fulfill a requirement for a heavy attack platform. In late 2000 the first batch of Su-30MKK two-seat fighter-bombers arrived from Russia, and with it the PLAAF’s ability to deliver precision-guided weapons was transformed. Two batches of Su-30MKKs, each of 38 aircraft, were procured for the PLAAF, while the PLANAF received 25 Su-30MK2s with a modified radar providing multi-target anti-ship missile capability.
Based on their experience with developing the “indigenized” J-11B from the Su-27SK, Shenyang and the 601 Institute have embarked on a similar program applied to the Su-30MKK. The result is designated J-16, and it is likely to become the main attack aircraft for the PLAAF, and possibly for the PLANAF as a land-based anti-ship platform.
As with the J-11B, the J-16 incorporates a high degree of Chinese equipment, including WS-10A engines. The most important improvement is an AESA radar of Chinese origin, although little is known about this sensor. Like the J-15 and Su-30MKK, it has a retractable refueling probe.
Details of the J-16 program are sketchy but it appears that the Flanker derivative made its first flight in late 2011. Last year at least two prototype J-16s were undergoing PLAAF trials, and it is possible that the type is now beginning to enter a wider operational evaluation phase.
Chinese “Super Flanker”?
For two decades the subject of China acquiring the Su-35 has been raised periodically in the media. The second generation of the Flanker design incorporates many changes to the airframe, avionics and powerplant. In recent years it is the engines (Saturn 117S/AL-41F) that are believed to have been the subject of the greatest interest from China, which has experienced considerable problems in developing its own reliable fighter powerplants.
A potential Su-35 sale to China began to be discussed in early 2012, initially covering 48 aircraft but later reduced to 24. Reports regarding the sale continue to be issued and late last year a senior Russian official said he expected a deal to be signed in 2014. However, there have been conflicting reports from China that the acquisition will not proceed.

The Navy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLAN) will establish multi-platform landing equipment systems in 2014, reporters learnt from the Armaments Department of the PLAN in early spring.
Previously, the PLAN troops have reaped many results in promoting the development of multi-platform landing equipment. New types of equipment including dock landing ship and air cushion landing craft have been commissioned to the PLAN in succession, and the research on large landing ship also harvested success. The rapid development of various landing equipment has laid a sound foundation for systematic construction.
According to a briefing, the Armaments Department of the PLAN will continue to tackle key problems to facilitate the establishment of multi-platform landing equipment systems and eliminate the loopholes. As an example of the efforts, a new type of air cushion landing crafts once serving in the Chinese naval escort taskforces will be commissioned to the PLAN in a row. Such landing crafts adopt home-made high-power gas turbines and hover-fans for stable driving force, showing sound adaptability to various battlefields.
In addition, the navy will also focus on enhancing the overall information level of landing equipment systems so as to further elevate the information exchange and precise-strike capabilities of landing equipment.

Australian surveillance plane scrambled to monitor Chinese naval activity
Feb 16 2014
By David Cenciotti
Royal Australian Air Force Orion aircraft launched to monitor Chinese military exercise that took Beijing’s warships closer to Australia than ever before.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, an unannounced military exercise held in the waters to the north of the Red Continent, brought three Chinese vessels so close to the coastline, to force the Royal Australian Air Force to scramble an AP-3C from RAAF Base Edinburgh, near Adelaide, to observe the warships activities.
The Chinese vessels, two destroyers and a landing ship, came through the Sunda Strait, skirted the southern part of Java, sailed close to Christmas Island before turning northbound through the Lombok Strait near Bali.
Obviously, since it remained in international waters, the Chinese flotilla did nothing really aggressive, even if the trip near Australia proves once again China wants to send the rest the world the message that People’s Liberation Army Navy can operate in both the Indican Ocean and the Pacific and counter the U.S. and Indian maritime powers in the Asia-Pacific region.
The U.S. has recently started deploying strategic bombers to Darwin, in the North of Australia: a B-52 deployed to Guam for a rotational bomber presence in the Pacific has landed there at the end of January to take part in a short term bilateral training with the RAAF.

Based on the DF-21 medium-range ballistic missile, China has recently developed a more advanced DF-25 medium-range ballistic missile. The advanement follows India's completion of its Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile, capabile of carrying nuclear warheads, reports the Qingdao News website.
The range of the DF-25 is estimated to be 3,200 kilometers. Even though it is still unable to compete against the Agni-V — with a range of 5,000km — the DF-25 is still capable of striking all major targets within the Asia-Pacific, including US military facilities at Guam, said the report. The DF-25 is also the first medium-range missile which can carry multiple conventional warheads.
The DF-25 can carry up to three warheads to strike multiple targets in a region. Combined with the Beidou Navigation Satellite System, the DF-25 can be mobilized to conduct precision attacks against US carrier strike groups as well. This will become another deadly threat to the US naval force operating in the Western Pacific, along with the DF-21D, according to the report. In addition, the the DF-25 is very difficult to intercept.
In this article, the Qingdao News website said that the speed of the DF-25's warhead is estimated at 7,000km/second, surpassing any ability of American surface-to-air missiles based in the Asia-Pacific region to intercept it. Once this weapon is mobilized against the United States, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, there will be no other weapon with the ability to stop it from reaching its target. In short, it renders the US Theater Missile Defense system in the region completely useless.
