China developing a stealth bomber

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 18 H20-103229_copy1

China is developing a new stealth bomber called the H-20 to firm up the PLA strategic bomber force, said Bill Sweetman, a military journalist and Richard D. Fisher, an expert in Chinese military development.

Russia and China are both proceeding with bomber plans while the United States is developing its own Long-Range Strike Bomber project, said the Washington-based Aviation Week & Space Technology report. China's H-20 bomber is most likely to be developed and produced by Xi'an Aircraft Industrial Corporation. The aircraft concept will probably be a subsonic low-observable "flying wing" configuration.

The development of a stealth bomber received "renewed national attention" back in Oct. 2013, according to colonel Wu Guohui, an associate professor from China's National Defense University. "In the past China has been weak regarding bombers, but in the future will develop long-range strike aircraft," he said. Even though the PLA Air Force has said virtually nothing regarding their plans, the H-20's completion is rumored to fall somewhere around 2025.

By that time, China will need the stealth bomber to accomplish two important strategic ambitions. The first is denying the US from entering the First Island Chain, extending from Alaska to the Philippines. Second, China will have to soldify its leadership in the Far East with a wide force projection capability. The H-20 would allow the PLA Air Force to complement the gathering global aircraft carrier and amphibious projection capabilities of its navy.

The H-20 could be developed as an unmanned combat aerial vehicle if the US and Russia decide to design their future bombers as such.

In the meantime, the PLA continues to develop a new version of the H-6 bombers and upgrade obsolete models with new weapons. Russia's rejection of China's request to purchase the more advanced Tu-22M3 leaves the country with no option but to develop or upgrade its own aircraft.

Chinese Navy Continues Flight Test Campaign of Future Maritime Patrol Aircraft Y-8FQ Cub/GX-6

A new picture recently surfaced from China showing the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) added a second Y-8FQ aircraft to conduct flight test and eventually qualify the new type of Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA). The Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) variant of Y-8, the Y-8FQ Cub (also known as GX-6 for High New 6) first surfaced on the Chinese internet in November 2011 as we reported at the time.

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 18 Y-8FQ_Cub_GX-6_MPA_Maritime_Patrol_Aircraft_ASW_PLAN_Chinese_Navy_1
PLAN Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) Y-8FQ Cub/High New 6 (GX-6) number 732 during a test flight in August or September 2014.

The Y-8FQ is based on the Y-8 Transport aircraft by Shaanxi Aircraft Company, equipped with four WJ-6C turbofan engines with 6-bladed propellers. The tail of the plane has been modified to improve handling at low speed and low altitude as request by MPAs mission profiles, when on ASW missions. On such mission the MPA would use its MAD (Magnetic Anomaly Detector) boom to detect submarines. This boom is clearly noticeable at the tail of the Y-8FQ.

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 18 Y-8FQ_Cub_GX-6_MPA_Maritime_Patrol_Aircraft_ASW_PLAN_Chinese_Navy
PLAN Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) Y-8FQ Cub/High New 6 (GX-6) number 731 during a test flight in December 2013.

From the picture above, we can note that the Y-8FQ is fitted with a chin radome housing some kind of maritime surveillance or surface search radar. It is also fitted with an Electro Optic/Infra-Red turret and several antennas both at the top and at the bottom of the fuselage. Finally, note the weapon bay doors just in front of the main landing gear, as well as the large bulbous window at the rear for visual observation.

All in all this new Y-8FQ Cub/High New 6 Maritime Patrol Aircraft has all the attributes of a capable MPA like the P-3 Orion, Atlantique II or IL-38. The first Y-8FQ MPA will likely be operated by 2nd Naval Aviation Division 6th Regiment Dalian-Tuchengzi.

Chinese Submarine Headed to Gulf of Aden For Counter Piracy Operations

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 18 Song-class_Submarine_5

China has sent a submarine to the Gulf of Aden to help in counter piracy operations — a first for the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) submarine fleet, according to the Chinese Ministry of National Defense. In a press briefing last week, ministry spokesman Col. Geng Yansheng confirmed a PLAN submarine was headed off the coast of Somalia to join a Chinese task force effort to piracy in the region.

News of the submarine emerged earlier this month when what appeared to be a Song-class diesel attack submarine (SSK) took on fuel and provisions in Sri Lanka from Sept. 7 to 14, raising questions if China was expanding submarine operations into the Indian Ocean.

“What needs to be pointed out is that it is a common practice for navies of all countries to have their submarines and ships replenished at certain intervals at ports,” Geng said.

A later statement from the ministry indicated the submarine was not part of a larger Chinese push into the Indian Ocean.

Still, the submarine’s presence has caused concern for India and other countries in the region wary of China expanding operations beyond the Western Pacific and the South China Sea.

China has spent considerable funds on infrastructure in ports like Sri Lanka’s Colombo and Pakistan in the Indian Ocean for years raising concerns of the Indian government.

“Chinese warships are deployed in the Indian Ocean Region and we are continuously monitoring them and see what is their deployment,” chief of the Indian Navy Adm. Robin Dhowan told reporters on Sept. 25.
“Along with it, our aircraft, submarines and warships are always deployed to face any challenge.”

India and China have also been at odds at the countries’ shared Himalayan land border.

Though China claims the visit by the attack boat was benign, the ambitious trek to the Gulf of Aden is a test of the logistics needed to operate its submarines further afield.

“The port call in Colombo highlights China’s need for logistics facilities for ships and submarines deployed along its sea lines of communications,” read a Tuesday analysis in Jane’s Defense Weekly.
”The fact that the facilities used were at one of two ports developed by China in Sri Lanka, as it has also done in Pakistan and Myanmar, is likely to reinvigorate the debate about Chinese construction of maritime infrastructure in the [Indian Ocean Region.”

It’s unclear when the submarine — and its accompanying tender — will join the PLAN flotilla in the Gulf of Aden. However, the length of the journey from China’s submarine base on Hainan Island is about 5,500 nautical miles. For the 2,200-ton Song, that journey could take up to three weeks, according to Jane’s.

Submarines have been used previously in counter-piracy operations as primarily surveillance platforms.

J-15 fighters conduct finger-four formation flight

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 18 Fourflight-152429_copy1

Four PLA Navy J-15 fighters conducted a finger-four formation flight over a carrier-based fighter test center at Xincheng in Liaoning in northeastern China on Aug. 28, according to the state-run Global Times.

An image of these four carrier-based fighters was uploaded to a Chinese military website by an unknown internet user. The state newswire Xinhua reported previously that President Xi Jinping, who also heads the Central Military Commission, was visiting the base when the flight took place. Xi met the pilots and commanders of the fighter unit aboard China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, after all the aircraft landed on the runway of the Xincheng test center.

The report said that the photos demonstrate the first time J-15 fighters have flown in finger-four formation. Four of these formations together form a squadron formation. China inherited the tradition of the finger-four formation from the Soviet Air Force, which adopted it during the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939.

Later on, the United States Army Air Corps and Naval Air Force adopted a similar concept called the "fighting pair." The carrier-based fighters of the US Navy have a tradition of conducting landing operations in finger-four formation. After flying past the port side of an aircraft carrier from the opposite direction, all four fighters land on the flight deck at intervals of 30 seconds if the weather is good. During bad weather, this time can be extended to 45 seconds or one minute.

New Delhi: Fifth generation fighter planes are going to be the future of armed forces across the globe.

According to a senior defence consultant Edward Hunt, several countries, including India, are pulling out all the stops to bolster their arsenal with the state-of-the-art machines.

Hunt, a consultant at Defence and Security, wrote in an article published in UK-based Jane's Defenc e weekly that China is planning to acquire close to 700 5th generation fighter planes.

US, with the only operation 5th generation fighter plane- F22 Raptor, is on the look out to purchase 2,616 fifth-generation fighter planes.

A major bulk of this purchase will be in the form of F 35 and F 22 manufactured by US-based Lockheed Martin.

Members of NATO including Great Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Turkey and Canada are planning to purchase a combined 600 F-35 fighters. In the Asia-Pacific region, Japan, South Korea and Australia will purchase an estimated 300 F-35s, the report said.

Russia, China and India are expected to increase their fifth-generation fighter aircraft strength by 1,500 jets.

The fifth-generation fighter aircraft will replace the ageing fleet of fourth-generation jets, like Su 27, Su 30 and Mig29.

Chinese aviation firms, Chengdu and Shenyang, are in process of developing their own fifth-generation fighter planes.

The report said that People's Liberation Army (PLA) will acquire 200 to 300 J-20 from Chengdu Aerospace Corporation and close to 400 J-31s from Shenyang Aircraft Corporation.

The procurement will help China counter threats posed by F 35 fighters of Korea and Japan in the South China Sea.

India's fifth-generation fighter program, FGFA, in collaboration with Russia, is well on course and it is expected to be complete by the end of this decade.

So far, USAF is the only defence force with an operational fifth-generation fighter
plane, F22 Raptor.

The Raptor made its debut recently as part of US-led military operations in Syria

China Conducts Flight Test of New Mobile ICBM

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 18 DF-31A-mobile-missile
DF-31B is Beijing’s sixth road-mobile nuclear strike system

’s military has conducted the first flight test of a new variant of one of its road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles in a sign that Beijing is increasing its strategic strike capability against the United States.

The test of a new DF-31B missile was conducted Sept. 25 from a missile test range in central China.

A Pentagon spokeswoman declined to provide details of the test.

“We continue to monitor China’s military modernization, including its missile tests,” Cynthia O. Smith, the spokeswoman, told the Washington Free Beacon.

No details of the missile test could be learned, but the test was believed to have been carried out from China’s Wuzhai test facility.

Nongovernment military analysts said the new missile likely is an increased-range or improved performance weapon, and possibly a multi-warhead version of the ICBM.

A Chinese military enthusiast website has identified the DF-31B as a mobile missile variant designed specifically for travel on rugged terrain or other difficult road conditions.

Mobile missiles are considered a greater strategic threat because tracking their location and targeting them in a conflict is very difficult. The missiles can be hidden in garages or caves to avoid detection by satellites and other sensors.

China has made clear in its state-run media that its nuclear forces are being developed for use against the United States. The Global Times reported Oct. 28 that a submarine-launched missile attack on the United States would kill between 5 million and 12 million Americans.

The new DF-31B is the latest addition to China’s rapidly growing nuclear missile arsenal that includes older silo-based missiles and five other road-mobile missiles. They include the long-range DF-31, DF-31A and DF-41 ICBMs, intermediate-range DF-26Cs, and medium-range DF-21s—a missile the Chinese have developed into a dual, nuclear-conventional weapon that includes an anti-ship variant. A DF-21 variant also is believed to be used as China’s anti-satellite missile system.

China has some 40 DF-31s and DF-31As, and the DF-41, which is expected to carry multiple-nuclear warheads, is said to be near deployment.

China also has deployed new submarine-launched missiles called the JL-2 that are based on new missile-firing nuclear-powered submarines that the U.S. Navy has said will begin their first sea patrols this year.

China also is working a high-technology hypersonic strike vehicle that is launched atop a missile and travels at extremely high speeds along the edge of the earth’s atmosphere. The glide vehicle is being designed to deliver a nuclear warhead through U.S. strategic missile defenses.

“They have an extraordinary selection of cruise missiles, and a ballistic missile force that they developed,” Adm. Jonathan Greenert, chief of Naval Operations, told a security forum in August, adding that in a future conflict, China’s missiles pose the most serious threat.

“If [a conflict is] in their backyard, I’m a little worried about their ballistic missile [force] because of its reach,” Greenert said.

China in late July conducted a flight test of a DF-31A, the fourth known flight test of that new missile in the past two years.

The latest missile test, which was not announced by the Chinese government, highlights Beijing’s largely secret strategic nuclear forces buildup.

Rick Fisher, an analyst who closely monitors the Chinese military, said the testing of a new DF-31 variant should be a worry for U.S. security officials.

“The emergence of a third version of the DF-31 raises the question of whether there is a multiple warhead version,” said Fisher, with the International Assessment and Strategy Center.

Fisher said the DF-31B also might be a silo-based missile or one designed specifically for China’s so-called “Great Underground Wall”—a network of 3,000 miles of tunnels and underground nuclear facilities that was first revealed several years ago.

“China has a track record of using warhead systems on multiple missile programs,” he said. “The advent of multiple warheads on the DF-41 may indicate new versions of the DF-31 may be so equipped. If real, this would accelerate China’s warhead growth.”

The testing of a third DF-31 variant, along with Moscow’s nuclear weapons modernization program “places greater pressure on Washington to proceed with modernizing America’s nuclear deterrent,” Fisher said.

Mark Stokes, a specialist on Chinese strategic forces, said the new ICBM variant could be a technically improved weapon.

“A DF-31B would most likely be an incremental, phased improvement on the DF-31A,” said Stokes, with the Project 2049 Institute.

“As a matter of PLA defense industrial process, R&D on an improved variant would have begun after the DF-31A entered full rate production,” Stokes said.

The Pentagon’s most recent annual report on the Chinese military states “The Second Artillery continues to modernize its nuclear forces by enhancing its silo-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and adding more survivable mobile delivery systems.”

“In recent years, the road-mobile, solid-propellant [DF-31A] ICBM has entered service,” the report said, adding that “China also is developing a new road-mobile ICBM known as the Dong Feng-41 (DF-41), possibly capable of carrying multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRV).”

Shanghai shipyard 'to build second Chinese designed aircraft carrier'

Work on China's secondlocally designed and built aircraft carrier will soon get under way at Jiangnan Shipyard, overseas reports says

China will soon start building its second locally designed aircraft carrier in Shanghai, according to a Canadian report.

Kanwa Asian Defence, an English-language monthly defence review produced in Toronto, said Shanghai's Jiangnan Shipyard was preparing to start work on the carrier.

When completed, the carrier and another under construction in Dalian will give the PLA Navy two fully functioning, battle-ready aircraft carriers.

The recently completed Liaoning, the refitted former Soviet carrier Varyag, is classed as a training platform, not a full combat vessel, by the navy, since it went into service in September 2012.

Counter to many expectations, the new carrier about to be built at the Jiangnan Shipyard will use conventional, not nuclear power.

The report was also carried in the Chinese-language sister publication, Kanwa Defence Review.

Military experts said China would not attempt a nuclear-powered carrier until a range of issues were resolved, such as the reliability of nuclear-powered engines, crew training and establishing a reliable home port for carrier maintenance.

According to the report, Chinese shipbuilding industry sources said the design for the second carrier had not been completed.

The Kanwa report countered earlier predictions by Western analysts that the new carrier would be nuclear-powered, like the planned Soviet Ulyanovsk-class carrier.

The Ulyanovsk was slated to be Moscow's first nuclear-powered supercarrier, with an 85,000-tonne displacement. But like the Varyag, the ship was never completed and the hull was scrapped in 1992.

Last year, China Shipbuilding Industry Corp, the largest state-owned shipbuilder, said Beijing had approved funding to develop core technology for nuclear-powered ships, which to many observers indicated plans to build nuclear-powered carriers.

Li Jie , a military expert in Beijing, said China already had experience with maritime nuclear power, but so far the technology was restricted to the PLA's growing submarine fleet.

"Compared with submarines, a carrier is much bigger. It will take time for our nuclear engineers to develop a safe and powerful engine capable of driving a huge platform of more than 100,000 tonnes," Li said.

The first locally designed carrier is being built in Dalian, where the Liaoning was completed in a decade-long fit-out.

The Dalian Shipyard completed the new carrier's steel plate cutting ceremony at the end of last year.

China To Debut Two New Fighter Aircraft At Zhuhai Air Show?

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 18 J16_1413983459

China may debut two new models of domestically-made fighters at the 10th China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition, according to Zhou Lewei, head of the Zhuhai Conference and Exhibition Bureau.

The most possible models may be two of the J-10B, J-15 or J-16, according to Zhou Lewei. According to China Military Online, J-10B is a reasonable guess, because it is said to have entered mass production and made frequent appearance. It has been coded to 130, so it is mostly likely to show at the exhibition. The aircraft adopts updated airborne devices, including AESA, HMDS, IRST, etc. After more advanced power systems are mounted, the fighter will become one of the most advanced warplanes in the world. And the J-15, nicknamed “Fei Sha” (Flying Shark) in Chinese, is improved from the 4th-generation fighter. Although it hasn’t made an official debut, it has been made public for multiple times and there is no surprise for it to show at the Zhuhai exhibition.

PLA Navy recruitment focuses on ship-borne fighter-pilot hopefuls

The 2015 pilot recruitment of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) recently kicked off, expecting to recruit 5% more pilots next year and placing more emphasis on selecting ship-borne fighter-pilot hopefuls, said news from CCTV.

It is reported that the PLAN's pilot recruitment consists of three stages - preliminary selection, comprehensive examination and final selection and recruitment. Preliminary selection will take place in October to November this year, comprehensive examination in February to May next year, and final selection and recruitment will be carried out after the results of next year's national college entrance exam are published.

With the continuous development of China's aircraft carrier, a large group of excellent ship-borne aircraft pilots is needed to establish the combat capability of the carriers.

Zhu Jianfeng, deputy director of the PLAN pilot recruitment office, introduced the new changes in the recruitment this year. "We have expanded the scope of pilot recruitment, set our eyes on those with the potential to carry out ship-borne flight in advance, introduced the psychological quality selection system for ship-borne pilot trainees, and officially incorporated cultural test in the preliminary selection."

China is capable of completing construction on its first Type 001A aircraft carrier within just six years according to Kanwa Defense Review, a military magazine operated by Andrei Chang, a military analyst in Canada who is also known as Pinkov.

To celebrate the Liaoning's second year of service with the People's Liberation Army Navy, the Sina Military Network based in Beijing displayed photos of the ship.

A defense expert told the London-based News of the World that China's Type 001A aircraft carrier will look very similar to the Liaoning, however, it will likely be larger.

The Kanwa Defense Review said that the Dalian Shipyard has already begun construction on the Type 001A carrier. The shipyard has been working on the project for ten years. For security reason, a 400-meter long indoor building berth was built. The article said that the aircraft carrier will likely be equipped with a steam turbine designed in Harbin in northeastern China and the steel plates for the ships will be mostly sourced from Shanghai.

Like the Liaoning, the Type 001A has a ski-jump ramp.

The magazine said that the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai is designing a second domestic aircraft carrier as well. This new ship is likely to be fitted with a catapult similar to US carriers.

The Washington-based Strategy reported that the ship will have four catapults and three escalators on board.

China to buy 5,000 Russian air-to-air missiles: Japanese report

Armée Chinoise / People's Liberation Army (PLA) - Page 18 PL12-175408_copy1

China is likely to purchase 5,000 R-73 and R-77 air-to-air missiles from Russia, writes Toshiyuki Roku, retired commander of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's Air Development and Test Command, in an article for the Tokyo-based Japan Military Review.

Since China's domestic air-to-air missiles such as the PL-12, the SD-10A and the PL-9C were designed based on technology from Ukraine and are still unable to compete against US counterparts, the People's Liberation Army realizes that it needs the more advanced Russian missiles to go head to head against the US and Japan in any potential future air combat, Roku wrote. He said China has already bought 1,500 R-77 missiles and 3,300 R-73 missiles from Russia.

Roku said the R-73 short-range missile developed in 1985 was considered the most powerful air-to-air missile during the Cold War, superior to the AIM-9M air-to-air missiles used by NATO air forces from 1982. The R-77 medium-range air-to-air missile designed in 1992 has similar capabilities to the AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile of the United States.

Before it receives F-35A fighters from the United States, Roku suggested that the JASDF develop or purchase new missiles to maintain aerial superiority in the skies over the East China Sea. Japan's main air-to-air missiles are the AAM-4 short-range and the AAM-5 medium-range missiles, which Roku said had both been upgraded in Japan. He also drew attention to the development of Chinese medium-range air-to-air missile with Ramjet.
