- Most non-Turks wouldn't know about it but a ton of high rank military officials were persecuted and jailed on a bogus coup charge a few years back. These were the torch carriers of the original secular Atatürk ideal and they came from this legacy of coups so Erdogan didn't trusted them at all.
All the Kemalist generals went in to work knowing they will be arrested and trialed as traitors even though they knew they were being setup. Pretty much none of them tried to flee most of them came with their bags ready to go to prison. It's not just the trialed generals as well I remember reading about 700 pilots resigning as a protest in just a 6 month period. This is back when Gülen and Erdogan were good buddies so after the bogus coup purge (Ergenekon and Balyoz) they were replaced with Gülen's people. Soon after all the high chiefs (effectively all the top chiefs of every branch of the military) resigned together. This was practically the end of secular Kemalist reign in the military and created a power vacuum where undeserving people got their spots and effectively weakened the military at every level. Most of these people were Gülenists so Erdogan was almost the architect of his own undoing since he gave the keys to the military to cleric Gülen.
Mete Yarar said that it is expected that around 600 pilots will be arrested in near future since the majority of Air Force seems to be under Gülen's control. They also made sure they had a man in every major assisting role (like president's special contact, military secretary, generals bodyguards etc) so that they can control them if need be. Which is what happened during the coup attempt.
They called all the top generals to the Armed Forces HQ and grabbed all of them as they came in. A general was a guest at a wedding when the helicopters came for him and fired warning shots at the reception before they took him away. Some generals realized a coup was going on and they send their bodyguards away to avoid getting captured by them. They grabbedChief of General Staff Hulusi Akar (top post in Turkish military) in his office and immediately put a gun to his head asking to sign the coup manifesto and effectively get ALL of the military under their control. He refused and was tortured. They put a belt around his neck and strangled him. Bruises around his neck is visible. At this point in coup they are grabbing every top general and neutralizing them and try to get them on their side. Akıncı Airbase (Akıncı=Raider fitting name heh) near Ankara is apparently where they were set as their main HQ. All the non Gülenist staff was told that there was no flights this week due to intense heat so they were cleared to go but I think they just kept a small ground crew so they could prepare the F-16's for a "training mission".
At the same time in the Special Operations HQ a Gülenist general -one of the main coup planners- tries to convince a sergeant to join them. It is reported that the sergeant didn't hesitate at all and just shot him in the head the moment he learned about it. They killed him soon after. This was apparently a big loss for the coup soldiers because he was a coordinator and one of the brains behind it all so I think this is a critical moment where it all started to fell apart for them.
Simultaneously in other HQs they try to convince another general to join them. He says I will think about it and tells the Turkish Intelligence that there is going to be a coup, alerting them to what is going on.
Around 40 special operatives are being brought in by four Black Hawks to kill the president. Their radio comms are intercepted by Turkish Intelligence, commanders talk about a past remark made by Erdogan about Gülen's cult effectively alerting Turkish Intelligence of the assassination attempt. They shoot at the hotel from air and repel down but only see the few bodyguards left behind. Erdogan escapes the assassination attempt by 15 minutes. Erdogan's bodyguards get him on ATA (Turkish presidential plane) and fly off to İstanbul Atatürk Airport which is now being occupied by tanks and soldiers in the control tower.
They get as many conscripts as they can but at this point all the plan has been moved forward since the word is out. Some exiled Gülenist police are smuggled high ranked soldier uniforms so they can order conscripts around. They tell them there is a terror threat, it's a training mission etc. to get them moving. Kuleli military school calls students that are in İstanbul for an event. They give them guns and uniforms and send them off to various places to take control. At this point it's all pretty incoordinated there are footage of whatsapp groups being used to communicate. They are comprised of a bunch of conscripts not knowing what is going on and a just a few ranked coup plotters and Gülenists in disguise. They try to take control of landmarks and media but they are very uncoordinated. They just airlift 4-5 conscripts to take control of media buildings. Police and protestors are grabbing them everywhere. They all just have a single plotter with them to order them around so pretty much all group just surrenders except the few guys who are Gülenists. They have a shootout and they are either dead or they surrender after they realize coup is failing.
Some units apparently believed that this was a complete coup with all the Turkish Armed Forces backing it so they hear the free generals speaking on media telling every soldier to stay in their barracks. They relay that message to the others cutting down the clueless soldiers numbers. One of the generals who was on tv live calling the coup plotters traitors and ordered the soldiers to their barracks was later arrested as well.
Police is in a hostage situation at Turkish Armed Forces HQ with the plotters. There is a shootout with the police inside the HQ and the protestors are starting to break in and they airlift the generals with Black Hawks to the Akıncı Air Base. Coup plotters have six F-16 and two Super Cobra attack helicopter circling in Ankara protecting the transport helicopters. One of the gunships attack a TURKSAT television building and kill 6 staff. Tanks are out in the streets in both Ankara and İstanbul. Just an hour after they make their appearence Erdogan and other politicians start calling people to the streets to stand against the coup. Reports of gunfires (mostly warning shots at air) follow. Small groups of soldiers are against protestors and police. Standoffs on Bosphorus bridges, İstanbul Atatürk Airport, Taksim in İstanbul and in Kızılay square, near Armed Forces HQ in Ankara. Protestors start climbing up tanks and try to open the hatches while in some places like Atatürk Airport most tanks are convinced to leave. A single tank is left in the Atatürk Airport and starts firing at the crowd. It later turns out that the guy who refused to surrender inside the tank was a Gülenist ex chief of police. A Leopard tank fires at a police vehicle (infamous TOMA anti riot vehicle) on Bosphorus bridge. A tank attempts to get away from the swarming protestors and crushes a couple cars and a protestor.
Erdogan's plane is near Atatürk Airport. Pilot is acting like they are a passenger jet to the control tower. Tower reports them the possible fast moving miltiary aircraft flying above Bosphorus. Two tanker aircraft from İncirlik airbase are helping the coup jets. They manage to land Erdogan safely after the airport is taken back by police and protestors. Erdogan is greeted by a large crowd.
Gunship above Ankara starts fires it's autocannon and kills protestors standing in front of a tank. Innocent passerby gets killed in his car while trying to get his child to the doctor as well.
General of Special Operations is ambushed by two cars but manages to escape from the blockade and meets up with his bodyguards. However a Super Cobra gunship is reported of their position and they are hit by a missile. One of the bodyguards loses his legs in the attack but the General drives on towards his HQ and finds it occupied by coup soldiers. He calls up his trusted soldiers and they manage to take the HQ back with 30 soldiers. Which immediately becomes a center to fight and coordinate against the coup. It's the only HQ during the coup attempt that was functioning.
Police Special Operations HQ is the staging area for the police where they were getting their orders and prepare to go against the coup. They were bombed by two F-16's. Highest number of casualties are from here. Ground crew in Akıncı Airbase see what is happening in Ankara on their TV and realize the bombs they loaded on the aircraft was used there. They are forced to work with weapons drawn at them.
Helicopters land at various media facilities to take control but police and protestors get them with minimal bloodshed. CNNTurk studio was evacuated but audience was still able to hear gunshots in the building live. State channel is briefly taken over by a number of soldiers and they are forced to read the coup manifesto live to millions watching them live announcing martial law. Just after a couple hours the studio will be freed and redact everything with a huge crowd in the studio.
As things go bad for the coup plotters things start to spiral out of control. Grand Assembly building is targeted by a Super Cobra gunship and F-16's start doing low altitude supersonic bombing runs while the representatives are inside doing livestreams over the internet calling people to stand against the coup.
Jet Two Super Cobra helicopters hit the main police headquarters in Ankara along with tanks supporting them in the ground. Tanks crush police cars in the yard. Turkish Intelligence HQ is also targeted by a gunship. Small arms fire all over Ankara is heard trying to shoot down the aircraft but they are no use.
In a naval base near İstanbul, Turkish Navy commander tries to get to his flagship TCG Yavuz in order to take control of the naval forces and stop them from falling under the coup plotters orders. He was at a military resort when two M60 SABRA tanks came towards his location. He quickly hopped on his boat and tried to find his way to the closest naval ship to assume command against the coup forces. Little does he know that the TCG Yavuz's first and second in command officers are coup plotters and he is promptly captured by them and taken away on TCG Yavuz frigate. Order is sent to the whole Gölcük Naval Yard fleet. All navy ships disembark but they are suspicious of TCG Yavuz's intentions. Another frigate turns on it's weapon systems toward TCG Yavuz warning that they will be shot if they sail towards İstanbul. TCG Yavuz cuts off communication for a while. They will later return the Navy commander and the frigate escaping on a small boat themselves.
PM Binali Yıldırım orders government jets to down coup jets. Super Cobra gunship is downed on the outskirts of Ankara while the coup jets are still unreported as of today in June 18.
People of Kazan county near Ankara realized Akıncı Airbase was used as the coups main base they tried to stop flights and were met with gunfire. Lots of casualties there. The real armed forces started an operation to rescue the joint chiefs and Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar. They were successful in rescuing all the hostages.
A huge armed convoy of 550 coup commandos going into Ankara was stopped by security forces the morning after. Six unauthorized C-130 transport plane landed at Malatya airport to begin the second wave of attempt but they were stopped by parked fire trucks on the runway. After a six hour siege 39 soldiers in them surrendered. There was also a tracked vehicle that crashed some cars outside the base and started shooting. Their tracked vehicle broke down on the highway and police arrested them.
Sources Security Expert and ex soldier Mete Yarar's statements on CNNTurk Special Coverage : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iiI2MPf25k ...and various Turkish media stories and footage. I also live very close to Grand Assembly in Ankara so I added from my experience as well. | |
