The exercises, that according to media reports will reportedly involve troops from Hungary, Romania, Saudi Arabia and Northern Cyprus, are due to last until June 30.

Koalas for the Turkish Army
The first Leonardo (formerly known as AgustaWestland) AW119T Koala training helicopters destined for the Türk Kara Havacilik Komutanlığı (Turkish Army Aviation Command) have been seen in January and February 2023 when performing test flights from Varese-Venegono Airport (Italy). Although CSX82076 (c/n 15521) was still test flying in its primer paint-scheme in January, Scramble Magazine assesses that it will be painted in the same Turkish Army livery that is sister, serial CSX82083 (c/n 15522), was seen when test flying in February. In June 2022, the Turkish Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM - Savunma Sanayii Mustesarligi) placed a firm order for the delivery of fifteen Leonardo AW119T (T for Turkish) Koala training helicopters. Scramble Magazine first reported on the tender for a new helicopter in August 2019.
Scramble Magazine expect this order for the AW119T to be an initial order that, once the type proves to be successful, will result in follow-on orders. The Koala helicopters will replace the Agusta-Bell AB206R Jet Ranger training helicopters. The current fleet of Jet Rangers are operated out of Isparta/Süleyman Demirel airport by the Kara Havacilik Okul Komutanlığı (Army Aviation School Command), Döner Kanat Uçuş Eğitim Kurulu (Rotary Wing Flight Training Course).

Türkiye to get new F-16s, if Congress approves
During the 11-12 July 2023 NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave the green light for Sweden to join NATO.
For those who follow the developments and political course of Türkiye closely, the statement by US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan that “the US will move ahead with the transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey in consultation with Congress” did not come as a real surprise.
Back in February 2023, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken publicly confirmed that the Biden Administration supported a possible sale of F-16 fighter aircraft to Türkiye, and this has now gained traction after president Erdoğan agreed to drop his veto on Sweden joining NATO.
Dating back to October 2021, the Turkish government made inquiries to procure 40 new F-16s in the Block 70/72 “Viper” configuration and Viper upgrade packages for 79 existing Block 50/Block 50+ Fighting Falcons. The USD20 billion deal would also include 900 air-to-air missiles and 800 bombs.
In mid-May of this year, the Türk Hava Kuvvetleri (TurAF, Turkish Air Force) received the first F-16 Block 30 that was modernised with the indigenously developed Özgür (aptly translated to: “Free”) Project. Türk Havacılık ve Uzay Sanayi (TUSAŞ or Turkish Aerospace Industries) developed the upgrade. Özgür-upgraded F-16s can fire indigenous ammunition and missiles which marks the independence that Ankara is seeking and the huge strides that the Turkish defense industry is making.
Although the Özgür upgrade is primarily intended to be applied to the Block 30 and Block 40 F-16s, it could potentially also be fitted in the Block 50 F-16 fleet if the US Congress would block the transfer of the upgrade kits.
Scramble Magazine assesses that if the US Congress approves the sale of new F-16Vs and upgrade kits to Türkiye that Greece will get the final green light for their request to buy up to 24 F-35A Lightning II aircraft.

Turkish Air Force to get all F-16C/D fighters modernized by 2025
Aviation Defense News July 2023
POSTED ON THURSDAY, 27 JULY 2023 15:10
The Turkish Air Force possesses a total of 270 F-16C/D aircraft, all falling under the Block 30/40/50 models. An agreement was reached at the 16th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) in Istanbul on July 26, as reported by Anadolu news agency, stating that Turkey will finalize the modernization of its F-16 Block-30 and F-16 Block-40/50 type fighter jets by 2025. The task of modernization will be carried out by the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI).

Haluk Görgün, the head of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), revealed that the F-16s will undergo modernization using indigenous avionic equipment. Both software and hardware will be updated to facilitate integration with indigenous ammunition.
The F-16 Özgür modernization program, led by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), focuses on upgrading the existing 35 F-16 Block 30 jets. The upgrades include the installation of a unique mission computer with national avionics and national OFP software. Additionally, the aircraft will receive various component upgrades, such as a national mission computer, system interface units, cockpit upper front control panels, fuel hydraulic indicators, engine display screens, emergency indicators, national sound safety devices, national friend-foe identification (IFF) systems, multi-mode receivers, inertial navigation systems, interface blinding units, helmet-integrated aiming systems, center cockpit indicator, and color multifunction displays.
The F-16C (single-seat) and F-16D (two-seat) variants were introduced in 1984, with the initial version being Block 25. The Block 25 featured improved cockpit avionics and radar, allowing all-weather capability and the use of beyond-visual-range (BVR) AIM-7 and AIM-120 air-to-air missiles. Subsequent versions included Block 30/32, 40/42, and 50/52 for the F-16C/D. The unit cost of an F-16C/D was US$18.8 million in 1998, while the estimated operational cost per flight hour ranged from $7,000 to $22,470 or $24,000, depending on the calculation method.

New livery for some TurAF T-38M Talons
The Türk Hava Kuvvetleri Komutanlığı (TurAF, Turkish Air Force) applied a stunning new paint scheme on some of its T-38M Talons. The two-tone grey color scheme will only be applied to aircraft used in Combat Readiness Training. An impressive angry bee (Ari (Bee) in Turkish - the motto of 121 Filo operating the Talons) is painted on the tail and orange details are applied to the tail and stabilizers.
121 Filo operates under 2nci Ana Jet Üssü Uçuş Eğitim Merkez Komutanliği (2nd Main Jet Base Flight Training Center Command) from Izmir Çiğli.
Turkiye 121 Filo T 38M 38159 oct23 2 320The artist behind the design is Omer Erkmen Artworks, who also designs many of the patches used by the Turkish armed forces. The Talons were painted by the 1nci Hava İkmal Bakım Merkezi Komutanlığı (1st Aircraft Maintenance Center Command) in Eskişehir.
So far, two T-38Ms are known to have this new livery: 63-8159 (c/n N5506) and 62-3737 (c/n N5442).
