In 1976, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) awarded funds to General Dynamics, Rockwell and Grumman under the Forward-Swept Wing Program. Forward-swept wings offer low drag and improved low-speed handling characteristics, but they are extremely difficult to manufacture using conventional techniques. The use of advanced composite materials makes the wing rigid enough to withstand the forces introduced by aerodynamic stress, while simultaneously avoiding a weight penalty.

The engineers at General Dynamics studied several designs, including one with canards and an aft-mounted wing. The final design submitted to DARPA used the landing gear and most fuselage components of the traditional F-16, yet it had a slightly lengthened and strengthened fuselage to allow the forward-swept wing to be attached, since the new wing was slightly larger than the traditional wing.

The SFW/F-16 was rejected by DARPA in January of 1981 in favor of the Grumman 712 (an F-5/F-20 derivative), later designated the X-29A. The decision was mainly a political one, as many thought that the test-scene at NASA was heavily dominated by General Dynamics' F-16s (AFTI, CCV, F-16XL). Another much-cited reason was that "One could only learn so much from a single airframe", though in retrospect, ongoing experiments with the F-16 seem to prove this wrong. It is interesting to note that the chosen design, the X-29A, consists for about 16% of F-16 components, including the Fly-By-Wire Flight Control System.

After the F-5 airframe was chosen for this project, all development into this version halted.

Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircaft Systems has proposed an improved version of the F-16, the F-16X, as the USAF's next multirole fighter. It would have a new wing based on that of the F-22 and no vertical tail. It would have twice the range of the F/A-18E/F at two thirds of the cost.

Interim improvements leading up to the F-16X could be introduced on F-16C/D block 50 Plus aircraft, incorporating color cockpit displays, a terrain-referenced navigation system, synthetic aperture radar, and a passive missile warning system. Later block 60 aircraft would have an internal LANTIRN system, APU and increased internal fuel in the dorsal spine.

The production of the F-16X would begin about 2010 if the program ever gets the go-ahead.

LMTAS has recently studied to turn NASA's F-16XL research aircraft into a tailless demonstrator, but there are no plans to conduct the modification due to lack of funding.

The study examined removing the vertical tail and providing directional control with a thrustvectoring engine and a new wing featuring all-moving wingtips and high-rate leading edge flaps. The new wing would have had more sweep and delta planform instead of the F-16XL cranked-arrow planform. As a lower-cost alternative the LMTAS engineers also studied keeping the F-16XL wing and modifying the ailerons.

The $250,000 six-months study started in the fall of 1995 as NASA was searching for experimental "X-plane" contenders in several categories, including high-performance fighters. The benefits would be a weight and drag reduction, and a lower, stealthier, radar cross-section, with agility that matched the standard Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter without angle of attack limits.

The F-16 would have been powered by the thrust-vectoring version of the Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engine that is now being used in NASA's F-15 Active program. It has a modification of the conventional circular nozzle to achieve vectoring.

The F-16XL design's ailerons were modified by extending the tips 1-2 ft., and adding an outboard area forward of the hingeline.

Since LMTAS has been awarded the contract to develop the F-35 as the next multirole fighter of the USAF and a lot of it's allies, futher development of this version isn't expected anymore.

les but derière la forme des ailes était d'augmenter la capacité d'emport du F-16U et de le doter d'une structure plus solide, mais j'imagine que ça a affecté la maniabilité exceptionnelle de falcon c'est la raison pour laquelle on a abandonné cette configuration et on a opté finalement pour la configuration traditionnelle du falcon.
c'est vrai qu'avec des plans canard il aura retrouvé sa manoeuvrabilité exceptionnelle, mais personnellement je préfère le design traditionnel.

tir avec cannon et GBU, a signaler que ce sont les troupes qui vont la designation de la cible par laser. et non pas l'avion par pod (LANTIRN ou SNIPER).

Three years later the Fuerza Aérea de Chile (FACh) added 18 F16 MLU A/Bs from the Dutch Air Force (RNLAF) costing $180 million US dollars. These replaced ageing Mirage 5 Elkan and Mirage 50/Panthers in the FACh fleet.

This second batch of 16 F-16s MLUs, including spares and support equipment, would cost 170 million US dollars and would be delivered in 2009. When all are delivered Chile's Air Force will have 44 F-16s, one of the strongest and most modern fleets on the South-American continent.

The new planes would be stationed in the Southern part of the country, however this moved has been met with criticism from members of congress who deem this as a possible unfriendly act to there neighbors Argentina.

The fund for military equipment purchases in Chile is financed with a percentage of copper windfall earnings and supported by legislation dating back to the Pinochet years. The bill is to be amended following a political agreement reached in Congress to review legislation inherited from the military regime and considered non democratic.

Military affairs analysts estimate the fund currently has 2.9 billion US dollars and is expected to increase in the coming months.

Et pourquoi on ne négocierai pas avec les israeliens pour qu'ils nous refilent une vingtaine de F-16 sufa??? Après tout il existe bien déja des contrats militaire avec le pays.....

faut pas exagerer tout de meme,en plus ils en ont besoin,ils font pas de surplus,et n´ont pas de problemes budgetaires non plus...le maroc prendra soit comme le pakistan des ex-ANG ou comme le chili des MLU(belgique)

vous paraissez tous si sûr que le Maroc va acheter des avions d'occaz la prochaine fois Smile je ne suis pas si sûr que ça, je suis plutôt optimiste, si achat il y a, ça sera pas pour demain, et dans dix ans je pense que le maroc aura assez de ressource pour acheter entre 24 et 48 chasseur 4+ qui deviendront plus fiables et moins chers après avoir décroché des contrats à l'export (ex: rafale).

faudra d'abord recevoir les 24 en cours et declarer les escadrons opérationnels sur F-16 52+ (pas possible avant 2012 si les livraisons commencent en 2010 comme prévu).
