Airbus Helicopters delivers first H225M aircraft to Brazilian Navy
Naval News November 2021 Navy Forces Maritime Defense Industry
POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, 24 NOVEMBER 2021 15:24
According to information published by Airbus on November 24, 2021, the company has delivered the first H225M in naval combat configuration to the Brazilian Navy. Stationed at the naval base in São Pedro d'Aldeia, the aircraft will boost the Brazilian Navy's mission capabilities including anti-surface warfare and maritime surveillance.
Naval version of the H225M aircraft (Picture source: Airbus)
Developed by the engineering team at Helibras (the Brazilian subsidiary of Airbus Helicopters), this naval version of the H225M aircraft is the most complex configuration that has ever been produced for this multirole helicopter.
The aircraft's embedded systems include the EWS IDAS-3 (countermeasure system), MBDA Exocet AM39 B2M2 missiles, the APS143 tactical radar and the naval mission system N-TDMS (Naval Tactical Data Management System) developed in partnership with Atech and Airbus Defense and Space, which is responsible for making the command and control of all embedded systems, including the missile system.
The last stage of the firing campaign with the Exocet AM39 B2M2 missiles was successfully carried out last June, representing a major milestone in the program, which led the way to qualification and delivery.
The naval H225M is part of the contract signed by the Brazilian government in 2008 and includes 50 H225Ms to be operated by the three armed forces. So far, 39 H225Ms have been delivered to the Brazilian Armed Forces, all of them assembled locally by Helibras.
Exocet AM39 is the airborne version of the Exocet anti-ship missile family. It can be launched from strike aircraft, Maritime Patrol Aircraft, and helicopters.
With a range of up to 70 km, depending on the altitude and speed of the aircraft, the Exocet AM39 enables the aircraft to remain at range from enemy air defenses.
When carrying out a low altitude attack, the missile may also be launched under the target ship radar coverage. Ingress is at a very low altitude over the sea (sea-skimming).

H125 order for Brazilian Armed Forces
Brazil is negotiating a deal with Airbus Helicopters for 27 H125 Esquilo helicopters, twelve for the Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB, Brazilian Air Force) and fifteen for the Comando da Força Aeronaval (Brazilian Naval Air Command). Both services will use the H125 for training purposes superseding the H-50 (HB350B) and IH-6B (Bell 206B) respecitively.
Funds for this deal are freed up from the Super Cougar/Puma programme (HX-BR). The air force will get one H-36 (EC725AP) less and the navy will give up one of five UH-15A (EC725BR-M) on order. The army will also give up one HM-4 (EC725), but instead of H125s they will get an extension on their support contract.
According to the Scramble database the FAB still has 25 H-50 Esquilo (HB350B) in their active inventory. The Navy has 17 IH-6B (Bell 206B) in their active inventory.

Brazililian Navy commissions Riachuelo-class submarine Riachuelo
Naval News September 2022 Navy Forces Maritime Defense Industry
POSTED ON FRIDAY, 02 SEPTEMBER 2022 14:42
According to information published by the Brazilian MoD on September 1, 2022, the Brazilian Navy has officially commissioned the Riachuelo-class (Scorpene class) submarine Riachuelo.
Brazilian Riachuelo class submarine Riachuelo (Picture source: Brazilian MoD)
Due to several technologies and innovations, the "Riachuelo" Class submarines (S-BR) are more versatile than the Tupi Class submarines (Tupi, Tamoio, Timbira and Tapajó) and are considered operationally superior to several submarines available in the world today.
They have advanced sensors - such as a sonar array and periscopes with night vision cameras - and a combat management system equipped with modern and complex algorithms that allow the submarine to detect and classify targets at long distances. The S-BR also has greater autonomy than its "Scorpène" class ancestor, due to a design change that included a midsection to increase accommodation and water tanks.
Through a technology transfer process, the construction of the S-BRs is being carried out by Brazilian labor (engineers and technicians) with technical assistance from the French company Naval Group.
The Nationalization Program has already qualified around forty Brazilian companies for the manufacture of submarine components, in more than one hundred projects, the main ones being: the manufacture of the salt water valves by the company Micromazza, the manufacture of the batteries by the company NewPower and the manufacture of the strut bearing by the company Miba.
For the construction of the Brazilian conventional submarines and, in the future, the Conventionally Armed Submarine with Nuclear Propulsion "Álvaro Alberto", a naval complex was built in Itaguaí that has several facilities, equipment, and specialized systems.
It is one of the most modern shipyards in existence, since the construction of submarines requires highly skilled labor and an industrial park equipped to enable the execution of the various manufacturing, commissioning, and testing activities. All this requires the integration of sophisticated technologies, following rigorous norms and standards of quality and safety.
Training the first crew
The training of the first crew lasted about two years and four months and was divided into three stages: preliminary, onshore, and onboard. In the preliminary training, the crew was submitted to theoretical exams and individual interviews. A Preliminary Training Plan was also prepared, executed by the Centro de Instrução e Adestramento Almirante Áttila Monteiro Aché.
The onshore and onboard training phases were carried out by instructors from Défense Conseil International, which is a partner company of the French Ministry of Defense, responsible for the international transfer of its military know-how to the Armed Forces of friendly countries.
After the Armament Display, the Submarine "Riachuelo" will be submitted to the Commission of Inspection and Training Advisory, which will guarantee its full employment capacity.
Afterward, it will undergo Operational Evaluation, an important process for the establishment of operational parameters, which will serve as a basis for all units of the class, foreseen in the PROSUB scope.
The population will be able to see the new ship during the Naval and Naval Aviation Parade, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), on September 7. During the event, three aircraft and 20 ships from the MB and other countries invited to the celebrations of the Bicentennial of Independence will run along the waterfront, starting at 9:30 a.m., starting at Recreio beach and ending at the Copacabana Fort.
Basic characteristics of the Riachuelo
The Submarine Riachuelo has a total length of 70.62 meters, hull diameter of 6.2 meters, surface displacement of 1,740 tons, and immersion displacement of 1,900 tons.
Its combat system is equipped with six gun tubes, capable of launching heavy electro-acoustic torpedoes, tactical missiles of the submarine-surface type, and bottom mines.
The Riachuelo will be the seventh Navy ship to receive this name, in honor of the Naval Battle of Riachuelo, which occurred on June 11, 1865, during the Triple Alliance War.
Besides the Submarine Riachuelo, the MB owns the Submarines Tupi, Tamoio, Timbira, and Tapajó, of the "Tupi" Class, and the Submarine Tikuna, of the Class of the same name.

Brazilian army to get Italian-made Centauro II as new 8x8 combat vehicle
POSTED ON FRIDAY, 25 NOVEMBER 2022 17:00
As written by Roberto Caiafa in InfoDefensa on November 25, as expected since even before the tender was published, the Centauro II armored vehicle proposed by the CIO consortium formed equally by Iveco Defense Vehicles and Leonardo has been selected by the Brazilian Army to become its new wheeled combat vehicle, which the land force announced this day on the website created for the tender.

What is important to notice is that the Italian vehicle prevails over the General Dynamics Land Systems LAV 700 AG, which ended second in the competition, and the NORINCO ST1-BR, ending in third position. The contract, which provides for the purchase of at least 98 Centauro IIs and which may be extended to 221 in the coming years, introduces 120mm ammunition to the Brazilian Army, digital fire control systems, integrated communications for the C2 combat, passive and active defenses, all digitized and integrated with a modern and functional battlefield management system. It will be the most sophisticated and complete combat vehicle in the history of the Brazilian Army.

NORINCO's ST1 ended third in the Brazilian competition (Picture source: Army Recognition)
The Centauro II is considered as the benchmark in combat wheeled armored vehicles, since it is the only one specifically developed for this purpose and not an adapted armored personnel carrier. The version that will enter service with the Brazilian army is the same as the Italian army’s one. The vehicle is equipped with a Leonardo Hitfact MkII turret, armed with a 120mm/L45 cannon. The Hitfact MkII turret is NATO-qualified.
According to what was published by the magazine Tecnología & Defesa echoed by Roberto Caiafa, the Centauro II and the Guaraní share approximately 28.5% of components, which makes them practically members of the same family of armored vehicles.
The Centauro II is a modernized version of the Centauro 1 anti-tank armored vehicle that was presented for the first time in June 2016 during the Eurosatory defense exhibition in Paris. The previous version of the Centauro was the first 8x8 anti-tank vehicle in the world to be armed with a high-pressure gun.
The Centauro II is a new generation of fire support vehicle based on wheeled armored vehicle chassis armed with a third-generation 120/45 mm gun, with integrated muzzle brake and semi-automatic loading system. The weapon system provides a firepower equivalent to all most modern main battle tanks and is capable to fire the latest generation of 120 mm NATO ammunition including APFSDS (Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot) and Multi-Purpose MP ammunition.
The Centauro II has a crew of four including a driver, commander, gunner, and loader. The vehicle is based on a V-shaped armored monocoque hull with a turret mounted at the rear of the hull. Both are of all-welded steel armor construction and integrate add-on armor and technical solutions offering STANAG 4569 level of protection against direct fire, anti-tank mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and the latest generation of kinetic ammunition.
The main armament of the Centauro II consists of a 120 mm/45 caliber gun fitted with a semi-automatic loading system with 12 ready-to-fire ammunition. Another batch of 19 ammunition is stored in the hull, in a compartment separated from the crew equipped with a fire-suppression system. The 120mm gun is an evolution of the Ariete MBT (Main Battle Tank) 44 caliber 120mm gun using a pepperpot muzzle brake and other features that reduce the recoil force from 45 tones in the Ariete to 25 tones in the Centauro II. The second armament includes one 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and d a Hitrole L remote weapon station that can be armed with a 7.62 mm machine gun or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.
The Centauro II has an 8x8 driveline offering a high level of mobility in all-terrain conditions. The vehicle is powered by an IVECO Vector 8V Euro III 720 hp engine, coupled to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It can run at a maximum road speed of 105 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 800 km.
The Centauro II can negotiate a gradient of 60%, side slopes of 30%, and a fording depth of 1.5 m without preparation. It has an angle of approach and departure of 40° and can cross natural or man-made obstacles up to 0.6 m high, and trenches 2 m wide.
