- US Navy to Receive Advanced Thermal Seeker
The US Navy could shortly deploy an advanced weapon system to defeat multiaxis attacks by small combat boats. The low-cost imaging terminal seeker (LCITS) is a future naval capability (FNC) that will be equipped to the unguided Hydra-70 rocket with an imaging infrared guidance solution for a more precise interception of target. LCITS comprises three main subsystems including a targeting integration system aboard the helicopter, a digital smart launcher and the guided imaging rocket. The helicopter tracks the position and velocity of the target by using its targeting system and transfers the information to the rocket launcher before the weapon is released. The new technology enables the pilots to increase the number of targets that can be quickly engaged, at ranges up to 7km. Currently, the Office of Naval Research-sponsored technology is entering the Medusa joint capability technology demonstration phase. Office of Transition FNC director Steve Smolinski said the FNC programme represented the requirements-driven, delivery-oriented portion of the navy's science and technology investment. "FNC-enabling capabilities draw upon technologies that can be developed, matured and delivered to acquisition programmes within a three to five-year period," he said. naval-technology

- US Navy Receives Renewable Jet Fuel for Testing
The US Navy has received 1,500gal of 100% algae-based jet fuel from Solazyme to test as part of the Navy's objective to operate half of its fleet on renewable fuel by 2020. Solajet HRJ-5 is the world's first 100% algae-based jet fuel specifically designed for use as a renewable aviation fuel for naval purposes. This shipment will be used as part of the navy's testing and certification programme. Solazyme CEO Jonathan Wolfson said the first microbial-derived advanced biojet fuel would aid the military's transition away from fossil fuel towards more secure, renewable and reliable sources. "The military has recognised the national security imperative of creating alternative energy solutions," he said. Solajet HRJ-5, which provides an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, has already been tested and satisfied all of the navy's requirements for renewable hydrotreated jet fuel. The delivery of Solajet HRJ-5 is part of the US Navy contract that was awarded to Solazyme by the US Department of Defense in September 2009. naval-technology

- BAE Systems wins $500 million contract to modernize US Navy DDG 51 destroyers
BAE Systems, Inc., a leading U.S. non-nuclear ship repair, modernization, and conversion company, will modernize 11 Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class guided missile destroyers under a contract with the U.S. Navy with a potential value of $365 million. This work, along with the recent acquisition of Atlantic Marine, reflects BAE Systems' efforts to support new-era requirements of customers for the readiness and sustainment of equipment and systems.
The company received the multi-ship, multi-option drydock contract to service ships home-ported or visiting the Norfolk area.
The company will start executing the contract in August when it begins planning, modernization, maintenance, and repair work on the flagship of the class, the USS Arleigh Burke. The contract consists of an initial one-year award plus four option years. If all of the options are exercised, the total value of the engagement could reach between $350 million and $500 million.
“This contract, coupled with those for CG 47-class and amphibious ships in Norfolk, San Diego, and Hawaii, reinforces BAE Systems’ robust, trusted partnership with the Navy,” said Bill Clifford, president of BAE Systems’ Ship Repair business. “We already will be well into the DDG modernization process on the USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) in San Diego when the USS Arleigh Burke comes into Norfolk for the same work. This will allow us to leverage our experience in San Diego to provide an enhanced final product to the Navy,” Clifford said.
Having executed 21 Chief of Naval Operations availabilities on DDG 51-class ships since 2006, BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair has more than 1.5 million man-hours of experience in DDG maintenance and repair. The company has also made significant investments in facilities and process improvements. defenseworld

Destroyer collides with civilian vessel
SAN DIEGO — The destroyer Shoup collided with a civilian craft in the waters off Southern California late Sunday night, causing “minor” damage to both vessels, 3rd Fleet officials said Monday morning. No one was injured. “The incident is under investigation,” 3rd Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Greg Hicks said in a written statement. “There were no injuries reported and both vessels remained at sea under their own power with minor damage.” The civilian boat, a 21-foot passenger craft, was escorted to the harbor at Oceanside, Calif., said Lt. j.g. Sean Groark, a Coast Guard spokesman in San Diego. The collision happened about 56 miles northwest of Point Loma. No other details were immediately available. Shoup was participating in an at-sea training exercise with the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group in the Southern California Operating Area, a large offshore training and weapons range. Along with a rescue team from Shoup, the Coast Guard patrol cutter Petrel responded to the scene to assist. Along with Shoup, Lincoln is conducting predeployment training with the destroyers Momsen, Halsey and Sterett and cruiser Cape. St. George Navy Times (Etats-Unis)

E-6B Block I Program enters production, deployment phase
August 3, 2010 by Marcel van Leeuwen
NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND, PATUXENT NAVAL AIR STATION, Md. — The E-6B Airborne Strategic Command, Control and Communications Program Office (PMA-271) completed a Gate 6 / Milestone C review for the E-6B Modification program (Acquisition Category II) June 8. With the Milestone Decision Authority’s approval, the E-6B Block I Program enters the Production and Deployment phase of the acquisition timeline. “This is a huge step forward for the entire E-6 Program Office,” said Capt. Bob Roof, PMA-271 program manager. “The Block I Acquisition impacts the implementation schedule for all the other acquisition ongoing in the PMA. Achieving this important milestone not only facilitates the Block I upgrades for the Fleet, but will also facilitate other very important upgrades to provide the Fleet with a state-of-the-art Command, Control and Communications platform. This was truly a team effort led by the Block I IPT leads, Cmdr. Jaime Engdahl and Amy Houle Caruso, and is the result of much hard work over the past year between the IPT and our contract partner, Rockwell Collins.” The E-6B Mercury Block I Program entered into System Development and Demonstration (SDD) following Milestone B (MS B) in March 2004. The purpose of the Block I Program is to correct E-6B Airborne Command Post (ABNCP) Follow-on Test & Evaluation deficiencies and replace equipment that is obsolete or degrades mission performance by modifying aircraft, ground training systems, and the Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL) to provide the Joint Force with a more effective survivable nuclear command, control and communications capability. The Prime Contractor for the Block IA Program is Rockwell Collins located in Richardson, Texas. Rockwell Collins, teamed with subcontract L-3 Communications, supports successful aircraft modifications in Waco, Texas. The System Design and Development contract will be complete 2nd quarter fiscal year 2011 (FY11). However, this Milestone C decision supports the first Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) contract to be awarded with an aircraft expected to be delivered for operational use 1st quarter of fiscal year 2012. An additional three aircraft will be completed by 1st quarter fiscal year 20113. The Block I Mod has supported some fleet exercises that have resulted in the fleet customer being very excited about the Block I Mod, the future of the E-6 aircraft and its mission, said Roof.
