Raytheon Receives First Production Order for US Naval SATCOM Programme
Raytheon has received the first production order for its next-generation NMT satellite communication terminals from the US Navy, marking a key milestone in the navy multiband terminal programme. Valued at $37.6m, the initial production order calls for 22 systems that includes 15 ship, five submarine and two shore terminals, and other services and products. NMT is a family of multibanded ship, submarine and shore communications terminals providing five times the bandwidth than other systems to the navy's military-band satellite communications. NMT integrates its extremely-high-frequency / advanced extremely-high-frequency (EHF/AEHF) capability with two-way military Ka and X band, and the global broadcast service. NMT is also compatible with wideband global SATCOM, backward compatible with legacy satellite systems, and interoperable with legacy navy and other service terminals. Raytheon Integrated Communications Systems vice-president Brian McKeon said that NMT gave the navy secure communications connectivity to the latest satellite constellations that users can absolutely depend on, in a smaller package, and at much lower cost. Raytheon was initially awarded the NMT prototype development phase in August 2003 and the procurement of terminals could potentially increase the programme's value to $1bn.

- U.S. Navy Conducts COBRA System Flight Test from Fire Scout UAV
An MQ-8A Fire Scout prepares to land aboard USS Nashville. AN/DVS-1 COBRA System to Provide Littoral Areas Reconnaissance 08:24 GMT, October 25, 2010 YUMA PROVING GROUND, Ariz. | The Navy successfully conducted the first flight test of the Coastal Battlefield Reconnaissance and Analysis (COBRA) Block I system at Yuma Proving Ground, Ariz., October 13, testing the system's performance on the Fire Scout vertical take-off unmanned aerial vehicle.
The AN/DVS-1 COBRA system allows the MQ-8B Fire Scout to conduct unmanned aerial reconnaissance in littoral areas, detecting minefields and obstacles to prepare for amphibious assaults. Incrementally development, the Block I upgrade was designed to specifically address the beach zone and inland areas.
"COBRA will provide valuable minefield, obstacle, and bathymetry information to the warfighter and amphibious task groups, information which is critical to amphibious assault planning," said Capt. John Hardison, deputy program manager for Mine Warfare Programs. "Successful completion of these tests is a significant leap forward in delivering this capability."
The Fire Scout, equipped with COBRA, conducted integration testing and flew for approximately 2 1/2 hours. Several successful tracks were completed in both pre-planned and operator-controlled modes and the systems conducted simulated missions. Take-off and landing went without incident, and the system completed all test scenarios.
With the successful completion of the first COBRA flight on Fire Scout, the system moves closer to delivery and deployment. The COBRA Block I system will enter low-rate initial production under a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase III contract. Under this contract, the first production unit is scheduled for delivery to the fleet in fiscal year 2012.
An affiliated program executive office of the Naval Sea Systems Command, PEO LMW designs, delivers and maintains systems, equipment and weapons needed by the warfighter to dominate the littoral battle space, and provides assured access to the warfighter.

US Navy Tests New Warhead for Tomahawk Block IV Missile
The US Navy has successfully completed the first live test of the joint multi-effects warhead system (JMEWS), the new warhead for the Tomahawk block IV tactical cruise missile. The JMEWS programme is designed to deliver a warhead that will provide blast-fragmentation capabilities to the missile and to introduce enhanced penetration capabilities into a single warhead. Raytheon's Tomahawk programme director Gary Hagedon said the Tomahawk block IV missile includes a series of enhancements to provide the warfighter with a more capable system. "JMEWS is the first of the planned system enhancements, and this test demonstrates that we have the right team in place to deliver these capabilities," he said. The warhead detonated during the test conducted on 16 August 2010.

- .S. Navy Awards Raytheon $14.8 Million for Helicopter Protection System
INDIANAPOLIS | The U.S. Department of the Navy's Naval Air Systems Command has awarded Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) a $14.8 million contract to produce dual pod countermeasures dispensers for U.S. Marine Corps CH-53 heavy-lift helicopters. Raytheon Technical Services Company LLC (RTSC) will manufacture the units at its Indianapolis operation.
Aircrews will use the pods to dispense chaff and flares to counter incoming missiles. The dual pods will replace current single-pod dispenser systems on the aircraft, enhancing the protection provided to crews and passengers.
"The CH-53 dual pod system will improve survivability of the aircraft in the combat zone," said Wayne Iurillo, RTSC vice president of customized engineering and depot support. "But most important, it will save lives of our warfighters."

US Navy Warships Could Get Powerful New Warheads
The US Navy warships in San Diego may be equipped with a new warhead, the Bunker Buster, for the Tomahawk block IV missile. Raytheon business development manager Jeff Meyer said that the new joint multi-effects warhead system aimed to enhance the missile's ability to penetrate thicker concrete and steel structures. "It just improves the capability of the system in different environments, whether it's hitting an aircraft on the airfield or if you want to go in and hit a command post that's underground a bit," he said. Raytheon and the navy will continue to develop and test the new tandem warhead over the next few years and could integrate it with the missile in 2014 or 2015, according to CBS8.com. The Tomahawk cruise missile has been used in virtually every combat operation till date, with more than 1,900 Tomahawk missiles fired in combat.

- Northrop to Continue Design of US Navy Aircraft Carrier
Northrop has been awarded a cost plus fixed fee contract modification from the US Navy to continue the engineering and design effort for the newest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R Ford (CVN 78). The $189.2m planned contract modification will fund additional design, planning and system integration activities and analysis. Gerald R Ford Class engineering and CVN 79 construction vice-president Mike Shawcross said the contract modification was essential to continuing the ship design to support construction. "Now that the design is in the 3D product model, our engineering and planning effort is focused on the production of instructions for the shops and ship assembly," he said. The Gerald R Ford Class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier ship platform features enhanced flight deck, improved weapons handling systems and a redesigned island.
