[justify]Le premier Littoral Combat Ship de la marine américaine a quitté mardi la base navale de Mayport, en Floride. L'USS Freedom (LCS 1) va réaliser son premier déploiement opérationnel dans les zones de responsabilité de l'U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) et de l'U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM). Durant ce déploiement, le bâtiment va mener des opérations de lutte contre les trafics illicites, notamment dans les Caraïbes. Des escales sont également prévues dans différents ports, par exemple, en Colombie, au Mexique et au Panama.

L'USS Freedom appareille ( : US NAVY)

Développé par Lockheed-Martin et Fincantieri, l'USS Freedom a été construit aux chantiers Marinette Marine de Manitowoc. Long de 115.5 mètres pour un déplacement de 3090 tonnes en charge, le LCS 1 peut atteindre la vitesse de 45 noeuds. Ce bâtiment comprend un armement de base articulé autour d'un système surface-air RAM, un canon de 57 mm et quatre mitrailleuses de 12.7 mm. Grâce à l'embarquement de modules interchangeables stockés à San Diego, il peut être configuré pour la lutte anti-sous-marine, la lutte antinavire ou la chasse aux mines. Pours sa première mission, l'USS Freedom embarque un Surface Warfare Mission Package (SUW MP) et un hélicoptère Sea Hawk.

Nouvelle U. S. présidentiel Helo Concurrence en cours

A new competition to build a presidential helicopter fleet was announced Feb. 16 by the U.S. Navy, which hopes to avoid the excessive cost overruns that made the VH-71 helo replacement program politically unpalatable and led to its cancellation in May. The new program is dubbed VXX, for Presidential Vertical Lift Platform(s). A detailed listing of requirements for the new aircraft is given in a 27-page request for information (RfI), which asks interested parties to provide a response by March 3 no longer than five pages. The document makes clear that no solicitation documents exist, but instead it is surveying industry to gather information in support of a new analysis of alternatives to replace the existing presidential fleet of VH-3D and VH-60N helicopters. The new aircraft are intended to begin operating in the 2017 to 2023 time frame, according to the announcement.
The VXX program is expected to produce at least two versions of the new helicopter - an executive model to transport the president, members of his family and heads of state, and a passenger-cargo variant to support the president. The RfI instructs interested parties to assume a "total aircraft buy of between 23 and 28 aircraft" - the same number of planned VH-71s.
The VH-71 program was controversial on both supplier and cost grounds. Supports of Connecticut-based Sikorsky were unhappy the company lost to a Lockheed Martin-AgustaWestland team that, while building more components in the United States than Sikorsky, nevertheless based its aircraft on an Italian-designed helicopter manufactured in England and completed in the United States.
Costs for the VH-71 also rose exponentially when a series of new security requirements were imposed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The Navy bore the brunt of public criticism for the cost growth, although White House security agencies had more to do with changing the requirements.
A final embarrassment took place shortly after President Obama took office in early 2009, when Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., defeated in the presidential contest by Obama, asked him at a public news conference why he was buying a helicopter "that cost more than a 747" airliner. Obama said he didn't know he needed a helicopter that cost so much - perhaps a final death knell for the program.
Although McCain was unable to document his claim, the Pentagon canceled the VH-71 program May 15, beginning a search for a new replacement.
The presidential helicopters are flown and maintained by Marine Helicopter Squadron One, or HMX-1, based in Washington. The Navy handles all acquisition for the Marines.

Alors que les relations ne sont pas au beau fixe entre la Chine et les Etats-Unis, USS Nimitz (CVN 68) est arrivé hier à Hong Kong, un port régulièrement fréquenté par l'US Navy. Le porte-avions nucléaire américain est accompagné du croiseur lance-missiles USS Chosin (CG 65), des destroyers lance-missiles USS Pinckney (DDG 91) et USS Sampson (DDG 102), ainsi que de la frégate USS Rentz (FFG 46). Le Nimitz Carrier Strike Group (CSG), qui compte plus de 5000 marins, vient d'achever un déploiement de 5 mois en mer d'Arabie. Durant cette mission, le groupe aérien embarqué a réalisé plus de 2600 sorties de combat au profit des troupes engagées contre les talibans. Les autres bâtiments du CSG, en plus de leur fonction d'escorte, ont réalisé des opérations de lutte contre les trafics illicites et la piraterie au large de la corne d'Afrique.
L'escale du CSG intervient au moment de la visite du dalaï lama aux Etats-Unis. Malgré les protestations de Pékin, le président Barack Obama doit rencontrer aujourd'hui le chef spirituel des Tibétains.

Citation :: All Survive US Navy Helicopter Crash in West Virginia

NORFOLK (NNS) 20-02-2010– The commodore of Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Atlantic held a press conference with local media to announce all 17 personnel on board the Navy MH-60S Nighthawk from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 26 based at Naval Station Norfolk, were successfully rescued from the aircraft.
The helicopter crashed yesterday shortly after 1 p.m. on the side of a mountain in West Virginia in more than four feet of snow.
“Our primary focus has been the safe evacuation of all the aircrew and passengers,” said Capt. Steve Schreiber, commodore, Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Atlantic. “As of this morning all personnel have either been evacuated from the crash site or are being evacuated.”
There were injuries reported, ranging from minor bruises to fractures, but none of the injuries are considered life threatening.
Those aboard the helicopter included 11 Navy, four National Guard personnel and two Marines. Nine of the passengers have been treated and released at Elkins Medical Facility, and one is currently inbound to Elkins. Three have been admitted for treatment and four are being transported to UVA Trauma Center in Charlottesville.
Schreiber lauded the heroic efforts of the crew and passengers, as well as the rescuers first on the scene.
“I’d like to thank the West Virginia National Guard and the local responders for their heroic work. Their efforts were extraordinary and took place under the most difficult of situations,” said Schreiber. “The rescuers had to traverse more than three miles from the nearest road through heavily wooded and mountainous terrain to reach the crash site. A special thanks to the Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort for providing Snowcats that enabled first responders to reach the site.”
The crew spent the night on the mountain and had to wait for rescuers to reach them, but they were prepared to weather the adverse conditions.

07:24 GMT, February 25, 2010 SAN DIEGO | General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), today delivered USNS Matthew Perry (T-AKE 9) to the U.S. Navy. The ship is named in honor of Commodore Matthew C. Perry (1794-1858), the U.S. Navy officer who established American trade with Japan in the mid-19th century.
NASSCO began construction of USNS Matthew Perry in April 2008. The 689-foot-long supply ship will serve under the Navy’s Military Sealift Command. The ship is capable of delivering almost 10,000 tons of dry cargo and petroleum products at one time to U.S. Navy and allied ships underway at sea.
Including the Matthew Perry, NASSCO has delivered nine T-AKEs, which are also known as Lewis and Clark-class ships. Later this week, NASSCO will host a christening and launch ceremony for the tenth ship of the class, USNS Charles Drew. In addition, the San Diego shipyard is now building the eleventh and twelfth Lewis and Clark-class ships, and soon expects to receive a Navy contract for the final two ships of the class, T-AKE 13 and 14.

The Pentagon is asking lawmakers for more time to decide whether to buy an additional 124 F/A-18E/F Super Hornets after receiving a "viable offer" for a multiyear contract on the jets from Boeing, according to a Feb. 26 letter sent to Capitol Hill from Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn.
"In the last few days" the U.S. Navy received the "viable offer" from Boeing for the 124 new aircraft, Lynn wrote. "I am writing to inform you that the Department of Defense continues to explore the possibility" of buying the additional Super Hornets."
Defense News obtained a copy of the letter.
Last year, Congress authorized the Navy to negotiate an additional multiyear purchase of Super Hornets and gave the service a deadline of early March 2010 to decide whether it wanted them.
In early February, senior Navy officials said that a Boeing multiyear offer for 89 of the jets did not provide enough savings to warrant the purchase.
Navy officials said the new Boeing offer would give the service 66 Super Hornets and 58 EA-18G Growler variants in 2010 through 2013, which would save the service 10 percent over buying the jets on a yearly basis.
"The Navy, working with the Office of the Secretary of Defense, needs additional time to properly evaluate the offer" because Boeing's latest bid came in so close to the service's deadline for informing Congress on whether or not it will buy the aircraft, a Navy statement said.
All of this comes as senior Navy and U.S. Air Force officials announced they are re-evaluating their respective initial operating capability (IOC) dates for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter following news that the newly restructured F-35 program will likely be delayed by 13 months. On March 2, Air Force Secretary Michael Donley told reporters that the air service is pushing its F-35 IOC date back by two years to 2015.
In 2006, the Chicago-based company proffered the Navy a multiyear package of 170 Super Hornets for $49.9 million a piece, an offer that officially expired last April

Depuis le début de 2010, l’US Navy a démis de leurs fonctions 6 commandants — le triple du rythme habituel — dont un commandant grande gueule qui a été démis pour avoir soumis son équipage à de la "cruauté et des mauvais traitements".

Les 6 commandants que la Navy a démis depuis le 8 janvier représentent un chiffre inhabituellement élevé. Un total de 55 commandants ont été démis entre 2005 et 2009, une moyenne de 11 par an, selon des chiffres fournis par la Navy.
Lt. Justin Cole, porte-parole de la Navy, précise que moins de 1% des près de 1.500 commandants sont démis chaque année. Il ajouté que l’augmentation constatée depuis le début de l’année n’est pas lié à un changement de politique ou une action concertée.
"Nous leur imposons des standards élevés," a-t-il déclaré de ces officiers. "Mais le niveau de responsabilité est resté constant au fil des années."
De nombreux commandants renvoyés le sont pour un comportement sexuel. Un commandant a été viré en janvier après avoir été arrêté pour avoir demandé une fellation à un officier pour 20 $ (l’officier agissait sous couverture). Un autre a été renvoyé le mois dernier pour avoir été impliqué dans des "relations inappropriées" avec un officier féminin, selon la Navy.
La culture de la Navy exige que le commandant est tenu pour responsable de tout problème grave survenu sur son navire ; un commandant sera pratiquement renvoyé à chaque fois, par exemple si son bâtiment s’échoue, même si d’autres marins sont directement responsables.
Une étude menée l’an dernier par le Navy Times révèle cependant que la conduite personnelle était la principale cause de renvois de commandants, avec un tiers des renvois survenus entre 1999 et 2008.
Des renvois pour "cruauté et mauvais traitements" — le motif retenu à l’encontre du Captain Graf — sont rares et de loin.

Les chantiers NASSCO (General Dynamics) de San Diego ont procédé, le 27 février, à la mise à flot de l'USNS Charles Drew (T-AKE 10), dixième ravitailleur polyvalent du type Lewis and Clark. Trois jours plus tôt, son aîné, l'USNS Matthew Perry (T-AKE 9), lancé en août dernier, avait été livré à la marine américaine. Longs de 210 mètres pour un déplacement en charge de 41.000 tonnes (18.000 lège), les ravitailleurs du programme T-AKE sont capables de transporter 6700 tonnes de fret, 3200 tonnes de combustible, 1700 tonnes de vivres et 200 tonnes d'eau douce. Construits suivant les normes « marine marchande », ils sont armés par le Military Sealift Command (MSC), dont les équipages sont civils et militaires. En tout, 14 unités sont prévues. La tête de série, le Lewis and Clark (T-AKE 1) a été admis au service actif en 2006.

Le 6 mars, la marine américaine a pris livraison de son 55ème destroyer lance-missiles du type Arleigh Burke. Construit aux chantiers Northrop Grumman de Pascagoula, l'USS Dewey (DDG 105) a été baptisé en janvier dernier. Après ce bâtiment, sept autres destroyers du type Burke doivent être achevés d'ici 2011, portant la série à 62 unités.
Long de 155.3 mètres pour un déplacement de 9217 tonnes en charge, l'USS Dewey disposera de deux lanceurs verticaux VLS Mk41, soir 96 missiles SM-2-MR, SM3, ESSM-RIM, Tomahawk VL et Asroc. Le reste de l'armement est constitué d'une tourelle de 127mm, 2 canons de 25mm, 4 mitrailleuses de 12.7mm et 6 tubes lance-torpilles. Le bâtiment peut également deux hélicoptères Seahawk. Après la cérémonie de livraison, qui s'est déroulée à Seal Beach, en Californie, l'USS Dewey a mis le cap sur sa base de San Diego

Fully integrated to support both air-to-air and air-to-ground engagements, LITENING features advanced image processing for target identification; coordinate generation for GPS weapons; a 640 x 512 or 1,024 x 1,024 pixel forward-looking infrared sensor for effective day and night operations; a 1,024 x 1,024 pixel charge-coupled device television sensor; a dual waveband infrared laser designator and eye-safe laser range finder; a laser spot tracker; an infrared laser marker; and optional air-to-ground video data link and digital video recorder.

In support of the U.S. Navy, successfully completed Combat System Ship Qualification Trials (CSSQT) for Aegis Combat Systems installed aboard U.S. and Spanish navy ships. The last time these two nations participated in a combined CSSQT was in 2007.
The latest event was conducted at sea last week in the vicinity of Pt. Mugu, CA and involved U.S. Navy destroyers USS Dewey (DDG 105) and USS Wayne E Meyer (DDG 108) along with the Spanish Navy frigate Alvaro de Bazan (F-101).
During the CSSQT, the ships’ Aegis Combat Systems were evaluated for combat-readiness through comprehensive surface, subsurface and anti-air warfare exercises, including manned raids and electronic attack scenarios, as well as thorough testing of the systems’ tactical data link and air defense capabilities.
“In addition to unmatched capabilities against all threats at sea, these qualification trials emphasize the global interoperability Aegis provides the U.S. Navy and its allies,” said Jeff Bantle, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Mission Systems & Sensors in Moorestown, N.J. “The contributions of our industry partners Navantia, Indra, RYMSA, Sainsel and other Spanish companies have been critical factors in the success of the Spanish F-100 frigate program, as well as in the support of the international fleet of Aegis-equipped ships.”
The Aegis Weapon System includes the SPY-1 radar, the Navy’s most advanced radar system. When paired with the MK 41 Vertical Launching System, it is capable of delivering missiles for every mission and threat environment in naval warfare. The Aegis Weapon System is currently deployed on more than 90 ships around the globe with at least 14 more ships planned. Renewable Oil Production Company will Deliver SolaHRJET-5TM Algae Jet Fuel to U.S. Navy

South San Francisco, CA – September 24, 2009 – Solazyme, Inc., has been selected by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to provide 1500 gallons of the world’s first 100% algae derived jet fuel for testing and certification by the U.S. Navy. Solazyme is the renewable oil production company and leader in algal synthetic biology, who earlier this month was awarded a separate Navy contract to provide R&D and delivery of over 20,000 gallons of renewable algae derived F-76 Naval distillate fuel for use in Navy ships.

In fulfillment of the jet fuel contract, Solazyme will utilize its innovative large-scale algal renewable oil production process in conjunction with Honeywell UOP’s EcofiningTM process to provide renewable jet fuel for testing and fuel certification to confirm it meets all military specifications and functional requirements. The contract calls for delivery of 1500 gallons of SolaHRJET-5TM renewable algae derived jet fuel to the Navy for compatibility testing next year. Solazyme’s renewable SolaHRJET-5TM is designed to meet all of the requirements for Naval renewable aviation fuel. This agreement between Solazyme and the DoD comes almost a year after Solazyme announced making the world’s first 100% algae derived jet fuel. Solazyme’s algal- aviation fuel, as analyzed in September 2008 by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), one of the nation’s leading fuel analytical laboratories, passed all eleven of the key specifications tested in order to meet the ASTM D1655 standard for Aviation Turbine Fuel. The tested specifications included the key measurements for density, thermal oxidative stability, flashpoint, freezing point, distillation and viscosity among others.

"Fuels made with our leading algal technology reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 85% versus standard petroleum based fuels. Superbes images que celles du tout nouveau porte-avions nucléaire américain, qui a effectué le 27 février des essais de manoeuvrabilité en Atlantique. Pour l'occasion, l'USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) a viré de bord à pleine vitesse, soit un peu plus de 30 noeuds, accusant une gîte impressionnante. Au cours des mêmes essais, le navire a fait un « machines arrière », provoquant un beau « bouillon » à la poupe.
Construit par les chantiers Northrop Grumman de Newport News et livré l'an passé, le bâtiment doit effectuer cette année sa première mission opérationnelle. Dixième et dernier porte-avions de la classe Nimitz, le George H.W. Bush mesure 333 mètres de long pour un déplacement de 98.000 tonnes à pleine charge. Il embarquera 68 avions et hélicoptères, son équipage comprenant 5600 hommes, dont 2700 pour le groupe aérien. Son système propulsif comprend deux réacteurs à eau pressurisée, quatre groupes turbopropulseurs et quatre lignes d'arbres, l'ensemble développant 280.000 cv (205.900 kW).
Après avoir réalisé une campagne d'appontages et de catapultages avc des avions d'entrainement T-45B Goshawk, le CVN 77 est arrivé mercredi dernier à Mayport, où il a réalisé sa première escale inaugurale. Le navire a profité de cette escale pour embarquer du personnel et du matériel afin de poursuivre sa campagne de qualification de pilotes au large des côtes de Floride.

A découvrir, dans cet article, les dernières vues de l'USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) fournies par Northrop Grumman. Le constructeur a débuté, en novembre dernier, l'assemblage du nouveau porte-avions américain, premier du type CVN 21. Avec ses 335 mètres de long et sa largeur de plus de 80 mètres, ce bâtiment sera le plus grand porte-avions jamais construit. Il sera, en revanche, un peu moins lourd que certaines unités du type Nimitz, avec un déplacement estimé à 95.000 tonnes à pleine charge. Cette nouvelle génération de porte-avions présentera diverses évolutions, comme l'adoption de catapultes électromagnétiques et l'embarquement de nouveaux coeurs nucléaires conçus pour ne pas être rechargés durant toute la vie des bâtiments.

On notera aussi que ces navires, dont l'îlot est déplacé très loin sur l'arrière, ne disposeront que de trois ascenseurs entre le pont d'envol et le hangar (contre 4 sur les unités précédentes). Le parc aérien doit comprendre 60 appareils (20 F/A 18 Super Hornet, 20 F-35 C, 6 EA-18 G Growler, 4 E-2 D Hawkeye et 10 hélicoptères), ainsi que 10 drones.
Devant remplacer l'USS Enterprise (CVN 65) dont le désarmement est prévu fin 2012, l'USS Gerald R. Ford doit entrer en service en 2015. Toutefois, compte tenu de la mise au point des nombreux équipements nouveaux dont le navire doit être doté, un décalage est possible.
Prévu pour être inscrit au budget 2013, un second porte-avions du type CVN 21, le CVN 79, devrait entrer en service en 2020. Cette unité permettra à l'US Navy de faire remonter sa flotte à 11 porte-avions. Enfin, un troisième bâtiment de nouvelle génération, le CVN 80, est sensé remplacer l'USS Nimitz (CVN 68) vers 2023. Le Nimitz aura, alors, 48 ans de service.

Citation :: L'US Navy perd deux F/A-18E Super Hornet dans une collision en vol

Deux chasseurs-bombardiers F/A-18E Super Hornet de l'US Navy se sont crashés lundi lors d'une mission d'entrainement. Appartenant au Strike Fighter Squadron 137, basé à Lemoore, en Californie, les deux appareils se sont percutés en plein vol. Les deux pilotes ont pu s'éjecter et ont été récupérés sains et saufs. La marine américaine a ouvert une enquête pour déterminer les circonstances exactes de l'accident.
Mis en service à la fin des années 90, le Super Hornet est embarqué sur les porte-avions de l'US Navy. En 2007, 300 F/A-18E et F/A-18F étaient en service, plus de 400 étant prévus au total
