Le National Audit Office (NAO), l’équivalent britannique de la Cour des Comptes, a indiqué que les nouveaux destroyers Type 45 de la Royal Navy auraient 2 ans de retard. Le budget prévu a été dépassé de 1,5 milliard de £ pour 6 exemplaires.
Le NAO a aussi indiqué que les navires prendraient au départ la mer sans leur système de missiles anti-aériens à cause de retard dans la mise au point.
Le ministère a indiqué que, après des retards au début du programme, il respectait désormais le calendrier.
Les destroyers sont les chevaux de trait de la Royal Navy, protégeant contre des attaques aériennes les bâtiments plus gros comme les porte-avions, et fournissant un appui feu pour les troupes au sol.
Ils effectuent aussi un large éventail d’autres missions comme les patrouilles anti-pirates et le secours en cas de catastrophe naturelle.
Une flotte vieillissante
Le ministère britannique de la défense avait d’abord prévu d’acheter 12 destroyers Type 45, mais ce chiffre avait été réduit à 8 en 2004, puis à seulement 6 l’an dernier.
Néanmoins, le NAO indique que le programme, qui devait au départ couter 5 milliards de £, couterait au final près de 6,5 milliards de £ (pour un nombre de bâtiments divisé par 2).
Le premier des destroyers, le HMS Daring, qui a été lancé en 2006, ne dispose toujours pas de la totalité de son système de communications. Il ne recevra pas avant 2011 son principal système de missiles anti-aérien, le PAAMS. Celui-ci peut abattre en même temps plusieurs appareils ou missiles ennemis.
Il devra aussi attendre jusqu’en 2014 pour être équipé de la capacité de combat en coopération, qui relie ensemble les systèmes de combat et les senseurs de plusieurs navires, améliorant leur capacité à combattre ensemble.
Le NAO indique que, en raison de ces retards, la Royal Navy devra conserver plus longtemps ses destroyers Type 42 vieillissants, qui avaient été conçus pour la Guerre Froide et que les Type 45 doivent remplacer.

RAF Tornado GR4 aircraft from 617 'The Dambusters' Squadron have helped to defend US and Afghan forces from an insurgent attack as part of a marathon mission lasting over seven hours.

Earlier, two of the RAF Lossiemouth-based aircraft had already spent three hours providing armed overwatch for British and American troops in Helmand province when the emergency call came in.

Officer Commanding 617 Squadron, Wing Commander Keith Taylor, said:

"Whilst carrying out this task we received an urgent call to fly 300 nautical miles [556km] north west to an area near the Turkmenistan border to provide support to a joint United States and Afghan National Security Forces patrol that was coming under repeated small arms fire."

As the 617 Squadron aircraft were on-task for three hours prior to the call for assistance and had to refuel a number of times over the entire on-task period, this added to the length of the mission. Wing Commander Taylor said:

"It was a marathon seven-hour, 45-minute flight [mission] and flying for that long requires a lot of fuel. We had to air-refuel four times and took on in excess of 20,000 litres of fuel each."

He said that after arriving one of the fighter bombers conducted a show of force to allow coalition forces to extract to safety.

He continued:

"The insurgents scattered to the cover of various buildings as the Tornado roared overhead at 100 feet [30m] and 500 knots [926km/h], allowing the patrol to withdraw."

The Tornado GR4s of 617 Squadron are operating as part of 904 Expeditionary Air Wing at Kandahar.

In the same week the squadron also conducted one show of presence, a higher-level flypast designed to indicate the presence of a Tornado, and four lower-level shows of force, all of which were successful in discouraging insurgents from attacking ground forces.

Black Watch welcomed home with Forfar parade before Prince Charles

"Well done lads!" — that was the shouted sentiment of one voice which captured the mood of hundreds on the streets of Forfar as the newly returned heroes of The Black Watch marched proudly through the Angus town on Thursday.


And the stirring sight of the Red Hackle-wearing soldiers, bayonets fixed, was more than enough to lift the gloom of a dreich morning as the first of a series of homecoming parades in Tayside and Fife received a royal salute.



Led by the battalion pipes and drums and the band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, some 300 Black Watch personnel took the town centre salute from their Royal Colonel, the Duke of Rothesay, in an event to honour them and comrades from the 51st Highland 7th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland and the Queen's Own Yeomanry following their safe return from a six-month tour of Afghanistan.

The deep affection for The Black Watch, who hold the Freedom of Angus, was instantly evident as the pipers struck up Scotland the Brave on the march down East High Street to the spontaneous cheers of the damp crowd.



In combat dress, the duke took the salute from the dais in front of Forfar's Town and County Hall alongside dignitaries including Lord Lieutenant of Angus Georgiana Osborne, and Angus Provost Ruth Leslie Melville.

The folk lining the town centre gave the servicemen and women a rousing reception and after the parade had passed through their patience was rewarded with a lengthy walkabout by Prince Charles, which also saw him pop in to a couple of town centre shops.



The duke firstly quizzed staff of local butcher D. & A. Kennedy, who said the unexpected visitor was keen to learn more about the produce on offer.

"He was interested if the meat was from local farms, and also asked us if we made our own sausages,'' said employee James Culley.

The prince then visited ironmongers David Irons a few doors away, where he met the shop's owner the Earl of Strathmore.

Almost exactly four years ago to the day, the earl's Glamis Castle home was the subject of an official visit by the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay to see the unveiling of the Queen Mother Memorial gates at the entrance to her Angus childhood home.

From there, Prince Charles moved on to Forfar's Royal British Legion clubrooms where he spoke to many of the personnel about their experiences on the successful tour, meeting also with veterans of the Angus Black Watch Association.


For 3 Scots Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Edward Fenton, the event was a personal homecoming for a man born in Arbroath and educated at Dundee High School, and he described the day as a ''great honour'' for the light infantry battalion.



He said: ''It is fantastic to receive such support and it makes the guys feel so proud and valued when you get a reception like this from the home area.''

He continued: ''It is our way of saying thank you to the people who are so supportive, such as the many who sent parcels simply addressed 'From an Angus resident', and it made them realise that what they were doing mattered to people in places such as Carnoustie, Forfar or all the other towns and villages in the area.''

Helicopter missile in first UK test

The first live firings of the Hellfire missile in the UK have been carried out by Apache helicopters carrying out training on board HMS Illustrious.

Two Apaches from 656 Squadron Army Air Corps fired one Hellfire missile each at a training target that was positioned by HMS Illustrious in the sea off northern Scotland where the ship is taking part in the multinational Exercise Joint Warrior.

The weapon, which has only previously been used in combat by British forces in Afghanistan and Libya, was fired for the first time in UK waters.

The firings also allowed the crew of HMS Illustrious to practise safely delivering the missiles from the ship's weapon magazines to the helicopters on the flight deck.

Captain Martin Connell, commanding officer of the Portsmouth-based helicopter carrier, said: "The Hellfire missile firings conducted from HMS Illustrious once again proved, as HMS Ocean did so effectively last year off Libya, that the potent combination of Apache helicopter and Hellfire missile can be successfully delivered by a UK warship at sea."

Major Piers Lewis, who commands 656 Squadron, said: "The Army Air Corp's Apache crews are comfortable operating in all environments and this has once again demonstrated our ability to fire Hellfire from sea having launched from HMS Illustrious.

"The Army Air Corps and Squadron forged excellent links with HMS Ocean last year - and are now forging similarly strong links with Illustrious."

A few dozen people braved the appalling weather at the Round Tower in Old Portsmouth to catch a glimpse as the first blocks of the warship left the historic port.


Projects manager Claudia Roberts, who works for the ship’s maker BAE Systems, was among the crowd.


She said: 'This is huge for Portsmouth.

'It shows what we can do and when we do it we do it well.

'This has been my baby for the past 15 months and now I’ve handed her over.'

About-turn on new variant of carriers’ fighter plane

David Cameron has approved a major retreat over aircraft for the Royal Navy’s new carriers, abandoning plans to buy the conventional take-off version of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.


Philip Hammond, the Defence Secretary, will tell MPs tomorrow that the Government will now purchase the jump-jet model of the plane instead, reversing one of the central decisions in the Coalition’s controversial defence review.

The Prime Minister’s National Security Council yesterday considered Mr Hammond’s plan, which will be announced to the House of Commons.

Mr Hammond will claim the decision will save hundreds of millions of pounds and help the Armed Forces. But he will face accusations of a climb-down driven by financial miscalculation.

The decision to buy the conventional take-off “C-variant” of the F-35 was at the heart of the Strategic Defence and Security Review in 2010.

Deploying the aircraft would require modifications to the new Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers to install catapults and landing gear.

The Ministry of Defence originally estimated the cost of that work at around £400 million, but internal MoD projections now put the figure at closer to £2 billion.

Mr Hammond told The Daily Telegraph this week that, since the defence review, “the facts have changed” on the choice of planes for the new carriers.

Attempting to balance the defence budget after years of overspending, Mr Hammond yesterday told Cabinet ministers that the rising cost should lead to the catapult plan being abandoned.

The Daily Telegraph earlier this month disclosed a secret Ministry of Defence paper showing military planners considered the jump-jet to be less useful and powerful than the conventional variant.

Despite the embarrassment of overturning the decision, ministers will argue that the change could bring some military benefits to the UK. In particular, buying the jump-jet could mean the next generation of carriers is ready to sail

The decision to install catapults on the new carriers was expected to delay the arrival of the new vessels until at least 2020. Delays in completing the conventional variant plane could have pushed that date back to 2023 or even later, leaving the UK without a working aircraft carrier for at least a decade.

By contrast, the development of the jump-jet fighter is proceeding more smoothly than expected, meaning the aircraft could be ready to fly from the new carriers as early as 2018.

Adopting the jump-jet could also allow the Navy to have two operational carriers. Under the review, one of the new carriers is to be mothballed to save money.

Downing Street confirmed a statement on the carrier programme was imminent.

Le ministre britannique de la Défense Philip Hamond a annoncé aujourd'hui au parlement que Londres revenait à son choix initial de l'avion F-35B américain pour équiper ses porte-avions, aux dépens de l'interopérabilité au coeur de la coopération franco-britannique.

Le ministre a indiqué que la préférence donnée au F-35B à décollage vertical fabriqué par la société Lockheed Martin se justifiait par "l'augmentation inacceptable et les délais" qu'aurait représenté le maintien du choix initial du F-35C à catapulte, ayant pour avantage de permettre aux avions français et britanniques d'utiliser indifféremment les porte-avions de l'un ou l'autre des deux pays.

Jeux olympiques obligent, et restrictions budgétaires aidant, la flotte britannique naviguant au large de l’Océan indien va en effet être réduite à portion congrue dans les prochains mois. Et la Royal Navy n’a plus assez de navires disponibles pour pouvoir en dédier un seul à la piraterie somalienne, nous apprennent nos confrères du Guardian. La « Lutte contre la piraterie devient très difficile pour le Royaume-Uni », leur a confirmé une source à Whitehall (le ministère de la Défense britannique) qui s’en désole. Mais explique : « Nous avons deux frégates qui sont de permanence » dans une zone très large puisqu’elle qui « va des Malouines et au Golfe ».

Les Malouines, le Golfe et … les JO

Jusqu’ici, précisent nos confrères, le Royaume-Uni avait toujours au moins un navire consacré à plein temps à la lutte anti-piraterie (NB : dans l’opération « Ocean Shield de l’OTAN ») et jusqu’à 4 parfois par rotation durant l’année. Aujourd’hui, la priorité est ailleurs : Londres et les JO tout d’abord. « Beaucoup de gens qui sont ont été entrainés à lutter contre la piraterie sont désormais impliqués dans les Jeux olympiques, de sorte qu’ils ne sont pas disponibles non plus, et ne le seront pas avant l’automne au plus tôt. » Autre sujet de préoccupation : la sécurisation du Golfe – avec l’Iran. « Une plus grande priorité maintenant ». Sans compter les Malouines. Résultat commente notre marin britannique : « nous ne pouvons pas engager de frégates à la Somalie. Ils y vont quand ils le peuvent ». Ne reste que le ravitailleur « Fort Victoria (qui) est une bonne plateforme ». Mais sa présence même est remise en cause…

Batterie de missiles sol-air Rapier installée en périphérie de Londres


Vendredi dernier, le 4 mai, le porte-aéronefs HMS Ocean, l’un des fleurons de la Royal Navy, a fait une arrivée très remarquée sur la Tamise, venant s’amarrer à East London, à quelques encablures seulement du stade olympique londonien. Avec à son bord des hélicoptères Lynx, Merlin, et Sea King, mais ayant la capacité de recevoir la majorité des voilures tournantes servant dans le pays dont les lourds Chinook de transport ou encore les Apache de combat ce bâtiment représente un argument de choc à opposer à ceux qui voudraient en découdre avec la capitale britannique entre le 27 juillet et le 12 août prochain. En effet c’est à cette date que le drapeau aux cinq anneaux flottera partout dans Londres qui recevra et organisera les trentièmes Jeux Olympiques d’été.
En fait depuis septembre 1972 et la prise d’otage des athlètes israéliens par un groupe de terroristes de la cause palestinienne, puis plus récemment avec les attentats du 11 septembre 2001 contre la côte est des USA, les grands rassemblement internationaux type Jeux Olympiques ou Coupe du monde de football sont devenus de véritables enjeux en matière de sécurité et de défense. On se souvient notamment dans l’Hexagone des « bulles » créées autour de France 98 et de ses stades (dont celui de Saint Denis) où des hélicoptères Fennec de l’Armée de l’Air sillonnaient les cieux avec à leur bord un sniper, tandis que des Alpha Jet et des Mirage 2000C se tenaient près au décollage, le tout sous le contrôle et le commandement d’un officier de haut rang installé à bord d’un E-3F.

Alors les Britanniques ne font pas les choses à moitié pour préparer ces jeux. Des batteries de missiles antiaériens Rapier, d’une portée de 400 à 6 800 mètres, pouvant voler jusqu’à Mach 2.5, et s’orienter par tous temps grâce à un radar à effet Doppler, ont été installées un peu partout dans la ville, notamment sur des points hauts. Des postes de tirs de missiles plus légers, type Starstreak (l’équivalent britannique du SATCP Mistral français) destinés à la protection rapprochée, seront également mis à disposition des forces de sécurité au plus près des sites olympiques. L’installation d’armement étant interdit par le règlement olympique sur les lieux d’accueil des épreuves sportives, certaines batteries jouxteront ceux ci.
Outre les hélicoptères embarqués sur le HMS Ocean un groupe de défense aérienne, composé de quatre Typhoon F-2 appartenant à la Royal Air Force, sera basé à RAF-Northolt, une base aérienne très proche du centre de Londres, où est habituellement installé le 32nd Squadron en charge des déplacements de la famille royale.

Outre ces moyens particulièrement dissuasifs des Sentinel R-1, des Sentry AEW-1, et des Shadow R-1, ce dernier étant une version de reconnaissance SIGINT du King Air 350 d’affaire, patrouilleront en permanence dans la région. En sus des hélicoptères d’assaut et des sauvetage seront mis à disposition des autorités civiles. En effet outre les 13 500 militaires mobilisés, 12 000 policiers (dont certains avec des hélicoptères) et un peu plus de 13 000 personnels de sécurité privée seront en alerte permanente sur ces jeux. Les hôpitaux et services d’urgence seront eux aussi sur le pied de guerre, Londres ayant été récemment la cible du terrorisme internationale avec les attentats de juillet 2005.

L’exercice Olympic Guardian se déroule donc du 4 au 10 mai et prépare non seulement les forces de sécurité mais aussi les habitants qui devront s’habituer à voir un déploiement de force de cet acabit. La capitale anglaise n’avait pas connu une telle effervescence militaire depuis la Seconde Guerre Mondiale.

De l'autre coté de la Manche, en dehors du fait que la coopération immaginée avec les british ne verra jamais le jour, la France pourra perdre sa capacité de frappe aéronaval unique dans l'Europe si jamais une décision du remplaçant du CdG ne soit décidé au cours de cette décennie, étant l'idée d'un 2°PA n'a plus de sens aujourd'hui. Un appareil de la Royal Air Force (RAF) britannique disparu au-dessus de l'Égypte en juin 1942 vient d'être retrouvé dans un désert de l'ouest du pays
Cet avion, un chasseur de fabrication américaine Kittyhawk P-40, a été découvert il y a quelques semaines lors d'une mission d'exploration minière, a déclaré l'attaché de Défense de l'ambassade de Grande-Bretagne au Caire, le capitaine Paul Collins, sans donner de localisation exacte.
L'appareil, qui a manifestement effectué un atterrissage d'urgence "impeccable", est "pratiquement intact, et dans un état de conservation étonnant", a-t-il indiqué. Son pilote, le sergent Dennis Copping, a probablement quitté l'appareil en emportant la radio, et son corps n'a pas été retrouvé.
Des démarches ont été faites auprès de l'armée égyptienne, responsable de la zone, pour effectuer des recherches. "Il a probablement de la famille quelque part, il faut résoudre cette question", a déclaré le capitaine Collins.
La région a connu des batailles parmi les plus importantes de la seconde guerre mondiale entre les forces allemandes et britanniques, notamment à Tobrouk (Libye) et el-Alamein (Égypte).

Thales to upgrade Royal Navy fleet with new digital UAT system


Thales UK is pleased to announce it has accepted a contract with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to upgrade the major surface fleet of Royal Navy (RN) with a new Fully Digital Radar Electronic Support Measures (RESM) system, featuring digital antennae.

In conjunction with the MoD, Thales has undertaken a six-year, multi-million pound research programme, and this has culminated in the development of the direct radio frequency (RF) sampling technology and demonstration of a digital antenna.


HMS Daring, the first of class of the Type 45 destroyers, has now entered operational service fitted with new digital antennae as part of the UAT electronic surveillance system MOD 2.0 programme.

Under the terms of the new contract – the UAT MOD 2.1 & 2.3, advanced technology will be now be introduced to the UAT RESM equipments fitted across the RN surface fleet and associated land-based training equipments.

The technology provides excellent system performance in the modern dense radar environment. This enables the ship to operate in all operational maritime theatres, including the littoral environment, and provides the RN with world leading electronic warfare support and emitter identification technology.

By digitising the RF signal at the antenna, the majority of the receiver functionality is implemented using software and firmware algorithms. The system is therefore easily upgraded and new signal analysis tools are easily introduced, keeping the RESM capability current in a rapidly evolving operational environment.

The approach also maximises the use of commercial off-the-shelf hardware, making the RESM significantly more reliable, easier to maintain and lowers the total cost of ownership.

Phil Naybour, head of Thales UK’s naval business, says: “Thales is proud to be the major supplier of radar electronic surveillance to the UK Royal Navy.”

“Our latest digital antenna provides the RN with unmatched performance in the highly congested littoral environment and a dramatic reduction in the cost of ownership. Thales now fully expects to bring this technology to the export market in 2014.”

Military chiefs are planning to give armoured vehicles worth an estimated £1billion to Afghan forces when it withdraws from Afghanistan in two years time.

Officials believe that more than half of the UK’s protected vehicles in the country will be left behind with the Afghan National Army and security forces rather than transported back to Britain.

Senior military sources have revealed that an initial review has identified that more than 1,200 protected trucks and personnel carriers are likely to be passed over to the Afghans in 2014.

Just 700 vehicles have been listed for ‘recovery’ – return to the UK – and they are mainly the latest and most heavily protected, such as Mastiffs, Ridgebacks and Foxhounds as well as a number of Jackals.

At present the Army has more than 1,900 protected vehicles in southern Afghanistan.

The Foreign Office, which directs operational policy in Afghanistan, has demanded that ‘significant equipment’ be passed to the Afghan National Army and Police so they can maintain security when the UK leaves.

The plan to leave 1,200 vehicles to the Afghans is the biggest inventory of equipment the British Army has ever left behind.

Among the most prized vehicles that will be left behind are a number of Wolfhound personnel carriers, some first generation Jackals, a weapons-mounted armoured patrol vehicle and a small number of heavily-protected Warthog all-terrain vehicles.

In addition, 132 Snatch Land Rovers, which underwent a costly upgrade, will be handed over plus 198 Vector armoured personnel carriers. At present the Afghan National Army and Police operate mostly in a fleet of pick-up trucks.

The overall cost of equipment scheduled to be passed to the Afghans is eventually expected to reach £2billion.

One senior officer said: ‘There is obviously good reason in making sure they have the right kit, but this is huge money we are gifting to them at a time when the British Army is skint.

‘We are seeing soldiers made redundant, assets being sold off all over the place, capability of our frontline units reduced and yet we are giving all this away.’

In Iraq the UK handed over a variety of basic vehicles to the Iraqi Army and Police, including 400 Armoured Land Rovers which had been used in Northern Ireland.

When UK forces left Aden in 1967 equipment that could not be shipped back was packed onto an RAF runway and after the last troops had been lifted out the kit was bombed by Royal Navy aircraft.

aérien c'est normal après la raclée qu'ils ont reçu pendant un exercice franco-britannique dont je me rappelle plus le nom

et en plus c'était un tout jeune pilote de rafale qui en était l'auteur .

On ne fait pas de combat simulé lors d'un meeting aérien, surtout pas à l'initiative d'une partie sans l'accord de l'autre et sans concertation au préalable, les plans de vol n'ont pas été inventés pour des prunes. Ne crois pas tout ce que l'on raconte sur le net.

Nous n'avons pas le détail de cette "raclée", nous n'avons qu'un seul son de cloche, celui des français qui était pressés de vendre du Rafale, et nous ne savons pas qui étaient les pilotes engagés, quel était leur niveau d'instruction sur Eurofighter par exemple, puisque c'était du dogfight, c'est le B.a-ba. Un pilote britannique doit bientôt voler sur Rafale et un français sur Eurofighter, nous verrons ce qu'ils diront. Tu veux dire que le britanniques n'ont jamais conçu un jet tout seuls?

HMS Daring Makes First Port Visit to Saudi Arabia



One of the Royal Navy's most advanced warships, HMS Daring, has made an official stop in Saudi Arabia to reinforce the country's strong relationship with the UK.

The Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer is on her first operational deployment in the Gulf where she is working with partner nations, including Saudi Arabia, to disrupt drug smuggling, trafficking and piracy in the region.

The port visit to Al Jubayl provided a good opportunity to host 200 selected guests and VIPs so HMS Daring could display her impressive capabilities as an air defence warship.

Helping to reinforce the good working relationship that exists between the UK and Saudi Arabia, both of which are committed to the fight against global terrorism, the visit also emphasised the strong military bond between the two countries.

The United Kingdom Maritime Component Commander, Commodore Simon Ancona, who was in the country for an official visit, also attended as the senior Royal Navy officer.

Commanding Officer of HMS Daring, Captain Guy Robinson, said: "It was a great privilege for me to take HMS Daring alongside in Al Jubayl for the first time. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to build on the strong relationship between the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.

"They make a very significant contribution to fighting terrorism in the region while being a trusted naval partner. This visit to Saudi Arabia was a first for me and a large number of my ship's company and it was a welcome break in a busy period working with Combined Maritime Forces."

The tried and tested mutual bonding over a sporting match also took place with Daring's rugby team beating local side the Al Khobar Quins 36-5. Around 30 senior Saudi naval personnel were also given tours of the ship as well as 50 local schoolchildren.

Lieutenant Thomas Wyatt, who helped host the tours, said: "It was great to be able to show the Saudis our ship. It is always really useful to show our allies and partners in the Gulf our capabilities. However it is always a pleasure to show a group of enthusiastic schoolchildren around as well."

Ships working as part of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) are tasked with a range of activities including sea security, counter-piracy, and maintaining stability in the region.

CMF are also ready to respond to any environmental or humanitarian crisis and are specifically committed to defeating violent extremists, thwarting piracy, reducing illegal trafficking of people and drugs, and promoting the maritime environment as a safe place for mariners with legitimate business.

LONG BEACH, Calif., May 18, 2012 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] delivered the United Kingdom's eighth C-17 Globemaster III to the Royal Air Force (RAF) today during a ceremony at the company's final assembly facility in Long Beach.

"I'm honored and delighted to deliver the Royal Air Force's newest C-17 to join the fleet at Number 99 Squadron, where our seven C-17s are in constant demand flying missions in support of Defence and other government agencies' requirements," said RAF Wing Cmdr. David Manning, Officer Commanding 99 Squadron. "It's a great feeling to know that we have the capability to deliver crucial supplies to the front lines with little notice, or to transport injured troops home with a better chance of survival because of the capability and flexibility of the C-17. This newest C-17 will be a welcome addition to the Air Force fleet."

The RAF C-17s are operated by 99 Squadron at RAF Brize Norton. The first RAF C-17s entered service in 2001 and have surpassed 74,000 flight hours -- 15 percent above the projected rate. The UK Ministry of Defence, citing ongoing demand, ordered additional airlifters for delivery in 2008 and 2010 and contracted for its eighth C-17 in March.

"RAF C-17s are ever-present when there's a need for humanitarian relief or peacekeeping around the world," said Bob Ciesla, Boeing Airlift vice president and C-17 program manager. "We're proud to support the Royal Air Force in providing for the mobility needs of their great nation, and we are grateful for the partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence and U.S. Air Force that made this delivery possible in such a short time."

"The RAF fleet's airlift capacity, increased by this latest delivery, is backed by a comprehensive sustainment services program," said Boeing Defence UK Managing Director Mike Kurth. "As part of the worldwide C-17 'virtual fleet,' RAF C-17s are supported through the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III Integrated Sustainment Program (GISP), a Performance-Based Logistics agreement. The support provided to the RAF under the GISP arrangement results in an excellent mission-capable rate at one of the lowest costs per flying hour."

Boeing has delivered 242 C-17s worldwide, including 216 to the U.S. Air Force active duty, Guard and Reserve units. A total of 26 C-17s have been delivered to Australia, Canada, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability initiative of NATO and Partnership for Peace nations. India has 10 C-17s on order for delivery in 2013 and 2014.
