- Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency Takes Delivery of Three AW139 Helicopters
AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is pleased to announce the official handover of three AW139 helicopters to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) during a ceremony held today at AgustaWestland Malaysia’s facility near Kuala Lumpur. In the presence of Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin Yassin, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, the aircraft were handed over by AgustaWestland to Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Amdan bin Kurish, Director General of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency. The aircraft will be used to perform search and rescue, coastal patrol and law enforcement duties around Malaysia's extensive coast line.
AgustaWestland Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of AgustaWestland, will also provide support and maintenance services for the MMEA’s AW139 fleet. The MMEA signed a contract for these AW139s plus options for additional aircraft in October 2008, marking the entrance of the AW139 helicopter into the Malaysian government market following earlier success for the aircraft in the Malaysian commercial market. Two AW139s were also delivered to the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in April 2010. The MMEA adds to the growing number of customers who have placed orders or are already operating the AW139 for homeland security, maritime patrol and search and rescue type missions. Customers also include agencies in Japan, South Korea, the UK, Italy, Spain, Estonia, Cyprus, UAE and USA.
Giacomo Saponaro, Senior Vice President International Government Business Unit, AgustaWestland said “We are very proud to hand over to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency today three AW139s and look forward to the aircraft entering service and serving the people of Malaysia. The best selling AW139 will provide a significant enhancement to the MMEA’s capabilities to patrol, protect and save lives around Malaysia’s extensive coast line. We are hopeful that the success of the AW139 in service will lead to a further expansion of the AW139 fleet.”
A new generation medium twin-turbine helicopter setting new standards against which all new medium twins are measured, the AW139 has been designed with inherent multi-role capability and flexibility of operation, offering unmatched performance and safety levels as well as the largest cabin in its class. With a maximum cruise speed of 165 kts (306 km/h), a maximum range of 573 nm (1061 km) and over 5 hours endurance, the AW139 helicopter offers class leading mission capability. State-of-the-art mission-dedicated technology and equipment and outstanding performance features enable the AW139 to accomplish the most demanding operations in the harshest weather and environmental conditions. The MMEA’s AW139 are fitted with latest mission equipment including a FLIR, NVG compatible cockpit and a 4-axis Automatic Flight Control System with SAR modes. Orders for almost 490 AW139s have been placed by nearly 140 customers from approximately 50 countries for a wide range of applications including EMS/SAR, law enforcement, offshore transport, VIP/corporate transport, fire fighting, utility and other commercial and government roles. AgustaWestland Malaysia Sdn Bhd continues to play a major role in the Malaysian helicopter market, expanding its presence and increasing its capabilities through a continued programme of investment. Located at Kuala Lumpur's Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, AgustaWestland Malaysia’s regional maintenance and support centre is a Malaysian DCA approved maintenance and repair organization. AgustaWestland Malaysia Sdn Bhd is providing local support and training services for the growing fleet of AgustaWestland helicopters in the region.

Navy chief: RM6bil cost to procure six littoral combat ships justified
KUALA LUMPUR: The RM6bil needed to procure six littoral combat ships (LCS) was due to the increased cost of materials, state-of-the-art weaponry and other aspects, said Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar. The ships, to be built locally by Boustead Naval Shipyard in collaboration with six reputable overseas shipyards, had better capability than the offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) currently used by the RMN. “The cost covers building the LCS, including the aspects of sophisticated weaponry, sensing and radar equipment that have very high capability and also sonar to detect enemy submarines. “The national defence industry is growing and depends a lot on foreign expertise. This is the main reason why the LCS costs so much,” he told a press conference at the Defence Ministry yesterday. Abdul Aziz was responding to comments by PJ Utara MP Tony Pua who claimed that the six ships cost 870% more compared with purchases of similar vessels by other countries. The navy chief said Pua’s remarks were off the mark as most nations would not reveal details on their military assets. “The costs abroad could also be much lower because the countries concerned have established defence industries as well as local expertise in ship maintenance, installing weapons and sensing systems,” he said. Abdul Aziz added that Pua’s claim that the New Zealand navy bought OPVs for NZ$90mil (RM211mil) each was also incorrect. He said based on the ministry’s findings, the cost of purchasing LCS by New Zealand had yet to be finalised and the NZ$90mil figure was the price before 2004. On Pua’s claim that the American navy procured LCS at much lower prices, Abdul Aziz said this was also baseless as the MP did not have in-depth knowledge on the matter. He said the RMN badly needed the LCS because the ships were equipped with surface and undersea capabilities unlike the OPVs. The LCS are also equipped with sophisticated defence systems such as command and control, electronic warfare, various modes of engine control, three-dimensional radar, sea and air missile systems and anti-submarine torpedo capability, he added. — Bernama thestar.com | |

U.S., Malaysian Forces Conduct Joint Aviation Exercise
By From USS Abraham Lincoln Public affairs
USS Abraham Lincoln (At Sea) (NNS) -- Aircraft from USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Carrier Strike Group participated in a joint aerial combat training exercise with the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Feb 14.
F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets from Carrier Air Wing (CVW)2 joined Malaysian SU-30 and FA-18D Hornets to train in multiple combat scenarios. Events ranged from single aircraft engaging single aircraft, all the way to complex multi-aircraft combat scenarios.
With the Malaysian SU-30s maneuvering at speeds estimated close to MACH 1, training was aggressive and realistic.
"Air Combat Training gives our aviators a chance to match their skills against the skills of some formidable foreign aviators and their modern aircraft. An added benefit is promoting regional partnerships and improving maritime security," said Lt. Luke Swain of CVW-2.
The United States and Malaysia share a diverse and expanding partnership and cooperate closely on a number of security matters, including counterterrorism, maritime domain awareness, and regional stability. The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is currently in the U.S. 7th Fleet's area of responsibility as part of a routine deployment to promote peace, cooperation and stability in the region.

RMAF Unveils Su-30MKM Simulator Centre
The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has unveiled its new Su-30MKM simulator centre for jet fighter operations training at its base in Gong Kedak, Malaysia, defence minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has said. "It is unique, as the training mission can be conducted using more than one simulated aircraft simultaneously, thereby effectively imitating an actual environment," he added. The simulator centre, developed by HeiTech Padu Berhad, consists of two sets of dual-seater high fidelity Sukhoi Su-30MKMA simulator systems. The system is capable of training RMAF pilots, weapons sensor officers and ground crew with high-level fidelity in simulating an aircraft flight model. The new technology will also enhance the RMAF's credibility as an advanced air force in the region, according to the Star.

Malaysia – Advanced Targeting Forward Looking Infrared (ATFLIR) WASHINGTON, May 12, 2011 – The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress today of a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Malaysia for upgrades to existing F/A-18D aircraft, as well as associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $72 million. The Government of Malaysia has requested the procurement and integration of a Mid Life Upgrade to existing F/A-18D aircraft including six (6) AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR Pods. Also included are software development, system integration and testing, test sets, aircrew and maintenance training, support equipment, spares and repair parts, publications, technical documentation, U.S. Government and contractor technical, logistics, engineering support services, and other related elements of program support. The estimated cost is $72 million. This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in East Asia. Malaysia needs these assets to support future coalition operations and aircraft interoperability with the U.S. and other regional partners. This will upgrade the current FLIR pod to a current configuration, reducing obsolescence issues, and aligning the Malaysian Navy with functionality similar to the U.S. Navy. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region. The principal contractor will be The Boeing Company in St. Louis, Missouri. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale. Implementation of this sale will require the temporary travel of approximately eight contractor representatives to Malaysia for installation, system validation, and verification of this system along with other upgrade capabilities being integrated and installed simultaneously. There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale. This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.

French firm targeting RMAF deal
KUALA LUMPUR: FRENCH aerospace company Dassault Aviation is set to open an office in KL soon, signalling its intention to win a lucrative fighter aircraft contract from the Malaysian government. The Malay Mail was informed by defence industry sources that the decision to open the office here “within the next one month or two” was a clear statement by Dassault that “it was serious” in offering its Rafale – which the company described as the only omni-role fighter - for the Royal Malaysian Air Force's (RMAF) multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA) programme. Sources told The Malay Mail that although the MRCA programme was comparatively small, the Rafale’s image - which has yet to win an export order – would be boosted if Malaysia chooses it to fulfil its requirement. Dassault's Rafale is one of the four aircraft reportedly in the running for the MRCA contract. The other contenders are the United States' Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Eurofighter Typhoon and the Swedish JAS-Gripen. RMAF chief Tan Sri Rodzali Daud was quoted recently as saying that “the air force is looking at acquiring between 12 and 18 ultra-modern fighter jets per squadron, to replace the aging MiG-29N Fulcrums by 2015. Ideally, we want to operate not more than two types of fighters for ease of logistics, maintenance and the like.” The air force also operates 18 Sukhoi Su-30MKM MRCA procured back in 1999. Apart from the Sukhois, RMAF has in service eight Boeing F/A-18D Strike Fighters in its inventory. The Hornet is the older variant of the Super Hornets. Defence analysts pointed out that although the Super Hornet was rumoured to be RMAF's preferred candidate, Dassault’s entry into the local scene indicated that the French believed that the tender would be done in a transparent and competitive manner. Last December, Dassault officials met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Putrajaya. No details of the meeting have come out but it was believed that as a result of the meeting, Dassault had decided to actively pursue the MRCA programme. The tender for the programme is only expected to be announced at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (Lima) show this December. All four fighters bidding for the MRCA contract are expected to take part in the show. Back in 1993, Dassault offered its then latest fighter aircraft, the Mirage 2000-5, to RMAF which had embarked on its first modernisation programme. The French company's representative office in KL was closed shortly after it failed to be selected for the programme. The firm also took part in the Lima exhibition in 1993. The Rafale, which has been combat-tested in Afghanistan and Libya, is in service with the French Air Force and Navy. It is still being considered in India, UAE and Brazil. Recently, the Rafale and its European counterpart, Typhoon, were shortlisted to fulfill the Indian Air Force’s medium, multi-role combat aircraft requirements. Both jets were selected ahead of the Super Hornet and another American entry, the F-16IN, Gripen, the F-16IN and the Mig-35.
