Armes de fabrication Israelienne - Page 18 Arie

Citation :
In the mid-70s a group of IAI (Israel Air Industries) engineers and IAF (Israeli Air Force) officers began a new project to develop an ultra modern Israeli fighter aircraft – a project that was supposed to take a quantum leap for aeronautics.

Designed to be the most advanced of its kind in the world by any standards, the Arie (Lion), would give the IAF a reliable option to the advanced US F-15 and F-16 types. Although it has never came through, the Arie became the cornerstone of another future and most ambitious project ever, an Israeli breakthrough to develop and produce the Lavi, the Israeli dream aircraft to outmatch the F-16.

Background

In response to the French embargo forced upon Israel after the Six-day warin 1967, a decision was made to strive for independence in the development of major weapons systems. Israel had already acquired the means to build good copies of the French Mirage, but wanted to be much more than just a clone maker.
The commander of the IAF (1982-1987), Gen. Amos Lapidot: said, “The essence was to create a technological infrastructure to develop and manufacture weapons systems in the three major weapons systems platforms – tanks, aircraft and ships. Behind that concept, were three basic rationales: First, Israel should not, and could not rely on foreign countries very volatile foreign policies. Secondly, the Israeli air force always strives to develop and use new war tactics and strategies, and was in constant need of new equipment to fulfill those operational objectives. Third, a national strategy to promote Israel 's and IAI's state-of-the-art technological accomplishments". This last point doesn't come over so well in English - by implication, these accomplishments would deter aggression, save money on expensive foreign weapon imports and maybe help Israeli exports.

Development

In 1974, an IAI team was set up to begin the Arie project. As no government approval had yet been received to produce it, the program was simply codenamed “R&D project”. Ovadia Harrari, who would later become head of the Lavi program, was to lead that endeavor.
The IAI decided to develop the Arie based on the technological knowhow acquired from the Kfir project, particularly from the Kfir-Canard program – the improved version. In fact, the first proposal which was put on hold by the Air Force, was to develop an aircraft to be named “Super Kfir” – a regular Kfir whose original J79 engine was replaced by an F100 model, the same as in early F-15/F-16s versions. That new engine would substantially increase the Super-Kfir's flying performance. However, due to the Air Force's strict specs requirements, a new draft was called for, in spite of the Kfir/Arie's visual similarities.
Over thirty different configurations were evaluated. The IAI tested several engine models, including the British Rolls- Royce RB-199, which powers the European Tornado aircraft. Soon, the options were reduced to just two. The F-100 single engine plane, or a twin-engine version.
The later, codenamed Light Weight Fighter-4 (LWF-4), was to be powered by two General-Electric F-404 engines as used in the F-18. “Looking at the different designs of the Arie, one can notice that it is an extensively modified Kfir” explains Harrari ,“ the aircraft is visually different, but its roots lay in the Kfir”.
The new future fighter aircraft, which was now codenamed “Hadish” (innovative), could be described as a single seat light fighter, capable of reaching 2.4 Mach speed, a 75,000 ft altitude ceiling, with a 480 km combat radius. Armament: would have been a 30-mm cannon and medium range air-to-air missiles. Avionics would include a radar, a helmet sight and an integral electronic warfare system. In addition, the aircraft would have low optical and radar signatures. Even the US F-15 and F-16 could not match these features at that time.
The outstanding question: An air-to-air fighter, or an air-to-ground attack aircraft?
During its initial design phases, the 1973Yom-Kippur war broke out, and the Israeli Air Force focused its attention on the battle proven air-to-air configuration concept, as air power and air superiority consist basically of air-to-air combat missions. Therefore, about 90 percent of the “Hadish” capabilities would be directed for air-to-air combat.

Technologies and Avionics

The Arie had several technological breakthroughs. It was designed to be the first Israeli aircraft to deploy digital fly-by-wire flight control system (at that time, cutting edge technology). This fly-by-wire concept, permitted the engineers to design an aerodynamically non-stable platform. Hence, they could achieve a small and highly maneuverable aircraft.
In the air-to-air version, to cope with enemy intruder aircraft, and keeping its air-superiority capabilities, the Arie would be equipped with advanced avionics and special ordnance systems: a highly sensitive Israeli radar capable of acquiring low-altitude flying targets. Advanced electro-optical systems would enable the Arie to locate ground targets at night.
Another breakthrough, was the pilot's option to use his helmet mounted sight, easing his combat workload. In the mid-70's these systems were nearly unheard of. It would take another ten years for the helmet mounted sight to become operational in any type of combat aircraft.
The Arie's cockpit resembles to a great extent that of the F-16's early versions. Besides the Head-up Display (HUD), a Monochromatic Display was mounted in the cockpit to display the radar's viewpoint.
The Pilot's view was close to 360º visibility– a life and death factor in air combats. This is now the normal design in both Western and Russian combat aircraft from the F-15 onwards.
The Arie's ordnance would include an improved 30-mm DAPA cannon, assorted air-to-air missiles, iron bombs, and precision guided ordnance. Max. military load is: 7 tons.
Although that aircraft was not meant to be a stealth aircraft, some basic stealth features were studied to give it the option to strike heavily fortified missile zones. This objective was based on the lessons learned during and after the 1973 Yom-Kippur war, when Israeli fighters had to face a huge number of SAMs. The Arie would also be equipped with an advanced Electronic-Warfare system produced by Israel , giving the pilot an early warning signal to lock on to enemy threats and jam them.
Studies were made to drastically reduce its radar signature, making it extremely difficult to be detected by enemy radar. For example, its bomb load was to be stowed inside a conformal ventral capsule, to reduce its radar cross section.

A Paper's Lion

According to the program timetable, the Arie's initial development phase should have been completed by mid 1979. Until then, the IAI would have to complete flight tests, select and define all the contractors.
By that year's end, an initial test flight was scheduled for the first of three prototypes.
By mid 1980, 10 pre-production aircrafts should be completed, with regular production to begin in the following two years. The Air Force should be receiving the first production Arie by the end of 1983. Delivery of 100 aircraft would be completed by the end of 1985.
Meanwhile, the IAF was leaning towards the US aircraft option. Rumors indicated that the USA would finally agree to sell Israel F-15s and F-16s. Finally, a decision was made to order the US aircraft. and scrap the Arie.
In August 1975, the IAF's chief, the (late) Gen. Benny Peled released a document defining the IAF's policy in relation to the Arie project. The document recommended the US F-15s and F-16s. Based on his assessment, the IAF began a procurement program of F-15s to be delivered by 1976. Moreover, it had been determined that the F-16 in principle answered Israel 's operational needs for an air superiority aircraft for the 80s. As a result of intense pressure on the IAF, Gen. Benny Peled decided to respond with a letter on May 10, 1976 , stating the reasons not to progress with the Arie: The US would agree to sell Israel F-16s. It had also been agreed that the US would sell Israel the F-100 engine, and there were not sufficient funds to keep the project moving.
“The fundamental knowledge that led to the development of the Lavi relied on the experience acquired from the “Hadish” and Arie”, says Gen. Lapidot, who created the Lavi project board, and commanded the Israeli Air Force by the time the project was canceled. “It can be definitely stated that the Arie, the Nesher and Kfir programs, added significantly to the development of the Israel Aircraft Industry (IAI), so that when we gave the “go ahead” for the Lavi, we already had a complete infrastructure in place and ready to work. In 1980, we decided to build a smaller version of the Arie. It is not by coincidence that it was named the Lavi. Lavi is a Lion (Arie), although a very much younger and smaller one”

IAI unveils BirdEye 650D, mini-UAV designed for 24 hour missions

Armes de fabrication Israelienne - Page 18 Birdeye650family725

Israel Aerospace Industries has unveiled its BirdEye 650D mini unmanned air system, the third variant of the BirdEye 650 mini-UAV. The new version extends the systems' mission endurance from two and three hours to 24

Israel Aerospace Industries has unveiled its BirdEye 650D mini unmanned air vehicle (UAV) at the recent IDAS-BMD symposium in Tel Aviv. The new version is a third variant of the BirdEye 650 mini-UAV. The 650D is extending the platform’s mission endurance from two and three hours to 24. Previous versions required committing two or three UAVs to achieve a 24 hour cycle.

The BirdEye platform was launched with the BirdEye 400 electrically powered variant, carrying 1.2 kg (2.6lb) typically carrying the 1 kg (2.2lb) MicroPOP stabilized EO payload. This variant was later enhanced into the BirdEye 650, a 11 kg (24lb) drone doubling endurance to two hours with the same MicroPOP payload. A longer endurance version was later introduced, stretching the mission to 3.5 hours, taking advantage of lighter payloads and larger power pack. The BirdEye 650 have also been tested carrying fuel cells, on missions of up to six hours. Regardless of power source, electrical propulsion is not powerful enough to sustain long missions with the payload class required by tactical users, IAI sources indicated.

These specifications typically require endurance of 20-24 hours and payload weight class of 5-6 kg. While IAI’s MiniPOP is slightly heavier for this application, lighter payloads conforming with this class are the multi-sensor TASE 350, comprising an IR and HD camera weighing 3.5 kg (7.25lb) from UTC or the Israeli T-Stamp, a 2.8 kg stabilized payload carrying a cooled IR and TV camera from Controp.

Electrical propulsion is far from meeting such goals. To meet this goal with a compact platform, IAI engineers scaled up the BirdEye 650 platform, adding a small combustion engine, and fuel tank sustaining 20-24 hours (depending on the payload used). The BirdEye supports such mission endurance with a starter-alternator sustaining the charged battery supporting the avionics, datalink and payload on the extended mission. In this configuration the BirdEye 650D has a longer fuselage and larger wing span, enabling maximum take-off weight of 30kg (66lb). The new model has an operational radius of over 50km (27nm).

The new version is launched from a catapult and retrieved by parachute and airbag. As performed by other BirdEye models, the 650D also uses a belly placed parachute that, when retrieved, flips the drone on its back, protecting the payload from ground impact. This flipped landing method eliminates the need for retractable turret. This mini-UAV will also be configured to operate from naval vessels, using a catapult launch systems and several, optional at-sea retrieval systems.

Israel plans to sell for the first time its Mekava IV main battle tank to foreign army.

Armes de fabrication Israelienne - Page 18 Merkava_4_main_battle_tank_with_Trophy_ASPRO-A_active_protection_system_Israel_Israeli_army_defence_industry_004

In a deal estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars, Israel plans to sell its Merkava Mark IV main battle tank to a foreign army for the first time since the first Merkava was manufactured in the late 1970s. It appears that the budget crisis in the defense establishment was a motivating factor behind the decision to export the tank.

For many years, the security establishment opposed selling the Merkava to foreign countries so as not to expose the secrets of its advanced armor and other unique systems. The Armored Corps Rakia program is currently developing a new tank, but it is unclear what the project's fate will be in light of the army's ongoing financial problems.
Development of the Merkava Mk 4 has started in the early 1990s and its existence was first unveiled in 2002. First production Merkava Mk 4 MBTs have been delivered to the Israel Defence Force (IDF) and the first battalion was fully operational in 2004.

The Merkava IV represents the third evolution of the Merkava main battle tank family. The overall layout of the Merkava Mk 4 is similar to that of the earlier versions. Main armament is a 120 mm smoothbore gun developed by Israel Military Industries that is a further development of that installed in the Merkava Mk 3. Secondary armament consists of a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun, 7.62 mm machine gun mounted on the right side of the turret roof and an internally mounted 60 mm breech-loaded mortar.

In the Merkava Mk 4 the ballistic protection is modular and is claimed to provide more effective protection against modern threats involving both protection efficiency and coverage area. The latest generation of Merkava IV in service with the Israeli Army are now equipped with the Trophy, an active protection system developed by the Israeli Company Rafael.

The Trophy active protection system creates a hemispheric protected zone around the vehicle where incoming threats are intercepted and defeated. The Trophy system is able to intercept any incoming HEAT threat, including RPG rockets at a range of 10 – 30 meters from the protected platform.

Excalibur and Rafael develop modernised BMP-2 to meet Czech requirement

Jiri Kominek, Prague
- IHS Jane's Defence Industry

Czech defence manufacturer Excalibur Army has developed a modernised infantry fighting vehicle, together with Israel's Rafael, based on the Russian-designed BMP-2.

The development is an effort to meet the Army of the Czech Republic's (ACR) requirement for 200 such vehicles beginning in 2018. The ACR is seeking to equip an armoured brigade with new infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) to replace existing BVP-2 (BMP-2) vehicles.

The Excalibur/Rafael developed platform is based on the Russian-designed BMP-2 chassis produced under license in the former Czechoslovakia during the 1980s. It is to be equipped with a Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Remote Controlled Weapons Station (RCWS)

Rafael extends Iron Dome C-RAM to the naval domain

Armes de fabrication Israelienne - Page 18 C-dome725

RAFAEL is extending the Iron Dome Counter-Rocket, Artillery and Mortar defense system to the maritime domain, to protect surface vessels from a wide range of threats, including ballistic trajectory and direct attack weapons. The navalized system dubbed ‘C-Dome’ is a Point Defense System designed to handle saturation attacks in both blue and littoral waters, by engaging multiple targets simultaneously. Similar to C-RAM scenario, saturation attacks at sea would require very short reaction time thus requiring the employment of automatic and semi-automatic engagements.

To address those threats C-Dome include a multi-round launcher assembly loaded with ten vertically-launched canisterised ‘Tamir’ interceptors packed in a modular Vertical Launcher Unit installed below deck. Tamir interceptors have proved themselves in over a thousand successful intercepts in recent combat engagements with rockets of different types.

The systems’ small footprint enables integration on small ships, including OPVs, small Corvettes or offshore rigs. The system utilizes the ship’s own surveillance radar and does not require a dedicated fire control radar. The systems’ command and control are integrated with the ship’s combat management system, facilitating seamless system operation.

C-Dome uses the combat-proven Iron Dome interceptor – Tamir – that has already achieved more than 1000 successful interceptions. Unlike the Iron Dome configuration, C-Dome Tamir interceptors are launched vertically, supporting unrestricted 360° azimuth coverage. The missile has an advanced warhead that ensures high kill probability against a wide range of targets. Recent combat engagements have challenged the interceptor, which demonstrated extremely agility and high rate-of-turn to facilitate intercepting in extremely demanding scenarios. and ripple attacks. The missile uses a smart proximity fuze that maximizes lethality of its powerful warhead to ensure target destruction.

Target missile tracked successfully, but second stage of trial cancelled by defense officials.

Israel fired a target missile used to test the Arrow ballistic missile defense system on Tuesday, but canceled the firing of an interceptor at the target, the Defense Ministry announced.

Defense officials said they decided to abort the firing of the interceptor due to the failure of a series of conditions to materialize, adding that the trial was “neither a success nor a failure.”

During the test, a target missile was fired at Israeli air space from over the Mediterranean Sea. In future trials, the Arrow system will be ordered to intercept incoming mock missiles, something that did not occur this time, the ministry added.

The ministry later clarified that during the trial, the target missile flew along its planned path and was tracked by Arrow, but that “the conditions for firing an interceptor were not ripe, and we therefore decided to class the trial as a target missile exercise only.”

Yair Ramati, of the Defense Ministry’s Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure, said the trial was to have consisted of two parts, Ramati said. “The first part of the launch involved tracking the target missile, which was fired over the Mediterranean Sea toward Israel. In the second phase, the Arrow 3 interceptor was supposed to be fired after a series of conditions we set for the trial are met. At an early phase, we collectively decided that the conditions have not been met. In accordance to our criteria, we decided not to launch the Arrow 3 interceptor.”

He stressed that conditions for a trial are very different than those need for an operational launch. “This is not the first time that not all conditions are met for a trial,” Ramati added.

“This trial represents a milestone in the development of the system,” the Defense Ministry added.

Representatives of the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency and of the Israeli and American defense industries were present during the trial. Some were from the MLM Division of Israel Aerospace Industries, the chief contractor of the Arrow program, which works in cooperation with IAI subsidiary Elta Systems.

The system’s fire management system is being developed by Elbit Systems’ Elisra subsidiary.

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems produced the target missile, and Boeing works with IAIMLM in developing the missile defense system.

“The Arrow system is a central component in the multi-layered defense,” the Defense Ministry said. “It relies on four layers of defense: Iron Dome (operational), David’s Sling (under development), Arrow 2 (operational)...and Arrow 3 (under development).”

Trials of the Arrow 3 system, which intercepts missiles in space, will be held in the future, the ministry said.

Last month, the IDF announced that David’s Sling air defense system will soon be deployed for a trial period, before becoming operational.

David’s Sling can intercept short-range to medium-range rockets and missiles, including Hezbollah’s Katyusha rockets.

Its range of coverage is three times that of the Iron Dome anti-rocket defense system.

The system will be deployed in various areas around Israel for a trial period, the IDF added.

After that, David’s Sling will also be set up to intercept hostile aircraft and missiles with longer ranges. Eventually, it should be able to intercept incoming cruise missiles as well.

AUSA 2015: Rafael to display Trophy active protection system on Oshkosh M-ATV

By Dylan Vosman - Oct 8, 2015

Armes de fabrication Israelienne - Page 18 9116

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd., developer and manufacturer of TROPHY APS, the world’s only operational and combat-proven active protection system for armored vehicles, will display its lighter, TROPHY LV (light vehicle) on an Oshkosh Defense M-ATV Base (SXB) 4X4 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle at AUSA, Washington DC. The Oshkosh M-ATV is a superior MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle. The Rafael Trophy LV solution enables greatest level of protection, hostile fire detection and greater lethality increasing operational capabilities and allowing troops to carry out missions with greater flexibility, maneuverability and confidence.

Trophy is a family of situational awareness and active protection hard kill systems that operate in three major stages: Threat detection and threat tracking, followed by hard kill countermeasure activation and threat neutralization.

The operational requirement to equip armored vehicles with an APS is dictated by the growing proliferation of advanced Anti armor weapons. Trophy-LV has the proven capability to defeat advanced threats coupled with handling all safety considerations of an autonomous shooting system, an issue that has raised concerns among potential customers for many years

Trophy-LV APS capabilities have benefitted from decades of experience at Rafael, developing and integrating APSs. The principles supporting Trophy LV are similar to those of Trophy‑HV, an APS which is currently in a fielding process in a third IDF combat brigade.

Trophy‑HV has so far saved dozens of soldiers’ lives, ever since its first deployment in August 2009 and especially in operation “Protective Edge” (summer 2014), where numerous anti-armor threats were launched at Merkava IV tanks equipped with Trophy – none of these potentially lethal attacks caused casualties to IDF troops.

The downscaled Trophy-LV offers a cost-effective, 360º protection, easy integration, minimal risk of collateral damage, outstanding performance at a fraction of the weight, coupled with the highest level of kill probability.

In addition to Trophy LV, the Oshkosh M-ATV will be fitted with a Rafael Samson Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RWS). Samson provides military users with enhanced capability not only in survivability, but affording them greater lethality, derived from Trophy-LV’s hostile fire detection (HFD) capabilities, coupled with, the world’s top-of-the-line RWS, Globally integrated on thousands of fielded ground and naval platforms in over 25 countries, Rafael’s Samson family of advanced Remote Weapon Stations (RWS), capitalizes on extensive combat experience with a deep understanding of emerging military needs. The Samson Family is offered in six land configurations. Samson RWS support diverse, interchangeable weapons and sensors including 5.56/7.62/12.7/30 mm machine guns, 40 mm automatic grenade launchers, anti-tank missiles, observation pods, and non lethal capabilities.

IMI announces new MPR bombs

Israel Military Industries (IMI) has developed two new versions of its MPR series of air-to-ground bombs and is working on a third, company sources have told IHS Jane's .

The MPR-500 bomb is already in service with the Israeli Air Force (IAF) and was used during Operation 'Protective Edge' against militants in the Gaza Strip in 2014.

IMI has now developed the heavier MPR-1000 and MPR-2000 munitions, while work on the lighter MPR-250 is at an advanced research and development stage, according to the sources.

The MPR family has the same form and weight as the standard MK 80 series of general-purpose bombs, so are compatible with a wide range of aircraft and guidance kits.

However, the Israeli bombs have a smaller lethal radius than the original MK 80 series, as well as increased penetration capabilities.

IMI says the MPR-500 has a maximum fragmentation risk range of 60-100 m and can penetrate more than 100 cm of reinforced concrete at an 80° angle.

Performance testing of the heavier versions has not been completed as yet, but an IMI source said the MPR-1000 can penetrate "significantly more than 1.5 m of concrete" while the MPR-2000 has "displayed capabilities that are significantly beyond those originally planned".

The source said precise figures will be released after all the testing is completed.

The MPR-500 enables the IAF "to strike as close as possible to our [ground] forces [and] go through four ceilings in a straight line" before a delayed fuse is activated, if the pilot chooses to use this option, one source said. "In addition to operational flexibility, they decrease risk to non-combatants: a goal the air force has told us is paramount."

"We built these bombs out of strong composite material instead of steel. We strengthened the fuse box significantly. They travel at 350 m/s [when dropped from high altitude], and they can dig before destroying a target completely," the source added.
