Sweden offers Croatia Gripen fighters

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — Sweden has offered eight Saab Gripen fighters to Croatia to replace its aging fleet of Soviet-made MiG-21 combat aircraft, Croatia's defense ministry said Thursday.

The offer for a 10-year lease includes a support and training package for Croatian pilots and technicians, plus an unspecified deal with Croatian companies. No financial or other details were released.

NATO-member Croatia has six MiG-21s in its air force. The jets made in the 1960s, which once belonged to the ex-Yugoslav air force, are reaching the end of their operational life unless urgently refurbished.

The aircraft ended up in Croatia when its pilots defected in 1991 from the federal air force at the start of the bloody breakup of the former Yugoslavia.

"We are pleased to present this offer which has been prepared in close collaboration with Croatia," Peter Gothe, deputy director of the Swedish Defense and Security Export Agency, said in a statement. "Gripen is one of the most cutting edge fighters in the world while being efficient and robust with low lifecycle costs at the same time."

Saab has previously supplied 14 Gripens to the air forces of Hungary and the Czech Republic each as the replacement for their decommissioned MiG-21s. Outside Sweden, the fighter is also in the air forces of South Africa and Thailand.

Golan: la Croatie va rapatrier ses casques bleus

BELGRADE, 13 mars - RIA Novosti

La Croatie a tout préparé pour le rapatriement de son contingent déployé sur les hauteurs du Golan au sein de la Force onusienne d'observation du désengagement sur le Golan (FNUOD) et entend réaliser cette opération sous peu, a annoncé mercredi Ante Kotromanovic, ministre croate de la Défense.

"Je connaît la date du départ, mais je ne la citerai pas pour des raisons de sécurité. Cela se produira dans un avenir proche, mais tout dépend de la situation sur le terrain", a déclaré devant les parlementaires le ministre, cité par l'agence HINA.

Le comité pour la Défense du parlement croate a soutenu à l'unanimité cette initiative du président du pays, Ivo Josipovic. La décision de retirer les casques bleus croates du Golan a été adoptée suite à des publications, selon lesquelles les combattants de l'opposition syrienne utiliseraient des armes croates. Bien que Zagreb ait formellement démenti avoir livré des armes aux rebelles syriens, les autorités croates ont estimé trop dangereux de garder sur le plateau du Golan son contingent de paix, fort de 97 hommes.

La FNUOD compte à présent 1.100 soldats et personnels originaires d'Autriche, de Croatie, d'Inde, du Japon et des Philippines.

C'est sur le plateau du Golan, qui surplombe les hautes collines entre Israël et la Syrie, que les rebelles syriens s'opposant au pouvoir de Damas ont récemment enlevé 21 observateurs de l'Onu, membres de la FNUOD.

Depuis la mi-mars 2011, la Syrie est secouée par un puissant mouvement de contestation du régime en place qui a fait, selon l'Onu, près de 70.000 morts et plus d'un million de réfugiés.

Croatian Army orders Protector remote weapon stations from Kongsberg

Kongsberg Group has been awarded a contract by Ðuro Ðakovic to supply its M151 12.7mm calibre Protector remote weapon stations (RWS) to the Croatian Army.

Valued at $17.03m, the order forms part of a contract signed between Ðuro Ðakovic and the Croatia defence ministry for the acquisition and installation of Protector systems on the national army's AMV 8x8 armoured combat vehicles.

After signing the contract, Croatian defence minister Ante Kotromanovic said the continued cooperation with Ðuro Ðakovic on combat armoured vehicle project represents another step in the ministry's efforts to build a small, but modern and mobile army.

"This is another confirmation that the Croatian Government and the Ministry of Defence remain firmly dedicated to continuously supporting the Croatian defence industry as one of the most potent Croatian export industries," Kotromanovic said.

Ðuro Ðakovic management board president Vladimir Kovacevic said the contract reaffirms the long-lasting successful cooperation that exists between the company and the defence ministry.

"We are happy that the armed forces are continuing the equipment and modernisation of their existing technology relying on Croatian producers as much as possible," Kovacevic added.

Manufactured by Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace, M151 Protector is a combat proven system, and is designed to enhance military troop protection and combat capabilities by enabling target acquisition and engagement from safer distances in the battlefield.

Equipped with a stabilised firing platform, a fire control system and control grips, the system can be mounted to an array of platforms, including the M249 and M240machine guns, Browning M2, MK19 40mm automatic grenade launcher and Javelin anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) amongst others.

The system is currently operational with Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Ireland, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, as well as the US and the UK.

Ukraine wins tender to repair Croatian MiG-21 fighters

Ukrspecexport state enterprise has won a tender for repairs and modernization of MiG-21 aircraft for the tactical air defense of the Air Force of the Republic of Croatia.
The Croatian Defense Ministry announced this in early June, Interfax-Ukraine learned at the state company on Tuesday.
Ukraine will repair seven Croatian MiG-21 fighters. The contractor will be Odesa Aircraft Repair Plant Odesaviaremservis, which is a part of Ukroboronprom Concern. The duration of works will be determined by the customer.
In addition, the Croatian Defense Ministry will buy another five refurbished MiG-21 from Ukrspecexport, which belong to Odesaviaremservis, Ukrspecexport said.
"Ukraine won the tender because its proposal fully met the terms of the Croatian side, in particular, the financial plans of the Defense Ministry," the agency's interlocutor said adding that another participant of the tender was Romania.
According to open foreign sources, the contract is worth 80 million kuna ($13.7 million, or EUR 10.5 million), which will be provided from the state budget of Croatia in 2013.
This is the second Croatian arms tender, which has been won by Ukraine since the beginning of the year. In May, the Defense Ministry of Croatia chose Ukraine for repairing six Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters. In addition to Ukraine, aircraft repair companies of Russia, Belarus and the Czech Republic took part in the tender.
