- What's new, pussycat? AgustaWestland begins breeding its new-look Wildcat
13 August 2010
The AW159, shown on display here, is equally adept in land or maritime environments. (IHS Jane's/Patrick Allen)
Having achieved significant international sales with several variants of the Lynx and Super Lynx shipborne helicopter over the last 20 years, the UK arm of AgustaWestland has begun gearing up marketing efforts for its successor, the AW159.
Conceived under the banner of Future Lynx, but latterly rebranded as the AW159 to bring it in line with other products in the company's portfolio, the aircraft was originally developed to meet the needs of the UK's Battlefield Reconnaissance Helicopter (BRH) and Surface Combatant Maritime Rotorcraft (SCMR) requirements.
As such, the AW159 – to be known as Wildcat in UK military service – is a six-tonne-class multirole rotorcraft that will be equally adept in land or maritime environments. A total of 62 aircraft have been ordered by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), with 34 destined for the British Army and the remaining 28 for the Royal Navy (RN).
Its antecedents are clearly rooted in the Lynx, conceived more than 35 years ago to meet requirements for an agile battlefield helicopter and versatile small ship rotorcraft. Multiple variants have given sterling service to the British Army, Royal Marines and the RN, and continue to make a vital contribution in current operations, culminating recently with the re-engined Lynx AH.9A deployed in Afghanistan.
Over the same period, Lynx variants have clocked up significant orders overseas, becoming the shipborne helicopter of choice for more than 10 international navies.

Eurocopter & ATE Begin Firing Tests on Weapons System for Light Helicopters
by Marcel van Leeuwen · Leave a Comment
Eurocopter, the world’s leading helicopter manufacturer, and Advanced Technologies & Engineering (ATE), South Africa’s aerospace systems integrator, have begun flight test firing a new Stand Alone Weapons System (SAWS) for light and medium helicopters.
Initial test flights with the SAWS-equipped Eurocopter EC635 have taken place at the Murray Hill Test Range, a South African weapons test facility near Pretoria. The trials follow Eurocopter and ATE’s decision to jointly design, develop, manufacture and support a modern SAWS that can be installed on any of Eurocopter’s light and medium helicopter products. Eurocopter and ATE described the firing trials as the successful completion of the initial phase of the system’s flight test and development programme. The EC635 participating in the flight test programme is fitted with a Belgian FN Herstal HMP–400 12.7mm machine gun and a French Nexter NC-621 20mm cannon. The first phase of the trials involved firing the Herstal machine gun. This was followed closely by firing of the Nexter cannon. The initial EC635 SAWS configuration for International Customers will also feature Denel’s Ingwe Anti-Tank Missile. Integration of the missile is currently in its design and development phase at ATE’s state-of the art facilities in Midrand. Future weapons to be integrated on these helicopters include missiles and guided rockets of various international suppliers. “Eurocopter’s partnership with ATE on SAWS is a joint response to an increasing market demand for helicopters equipped with a suitably credible weapon system able to counter evolving threats and both current and future conflict mission scenarios. While we have proven capabilities producing multi-role military helicopters, ATE is unrivalled in weapon system development and sub-systems integration on fixed and rotary wing aircraft. This venture and our partnership make perfect sense,” explained Olivier Lambert, Eurocopter’s Senior Vice President Sales & Customers Relations. Describing the SAWS programme’s significance, ATE CEO, Jean-Marc Pizano said: “The successful completion of this major international project will position ATE and South Africa as the world’s leading integrator of a variety of weapons on foreign aircraft. It also has the potential to place ATE and its South African suppliers as part of an international supply chain at systems level with the world’s number one helicopter manufacturer.” The SAWS will allow light and medium helicopters to perform in a range of missions, including: • Surveillance and armed reconnaissance • Airborne Command and Control • Close Air Support • Maritime patrol, littoral warfare (anti piracy), Coast Guard • Counter insurgency • Anti-terrorism • Potential for light ASuW and ASW The SAWS typically comprises: • A core element including a Mission & Firing Control Computer, together with controls and components to interface the crew and the platform. • A choice of sensors: FLIR, TV, HUD, HMSD. • A choice of guided weapons providing the necessary flexibility for a given mission. • A choice of unguided weapons. U.S. Marine Corps AH-1Z Helicopter Upgrade Completes Operational Evaluation With Northrop Grumman Integrated Cockpit
Integrated Avionics System (IAS) and the company's integration support were key elements in the successful completion of Operational Evaluation (OPEVAL) for the U.S. Marine Corps AH-1Z Cobra, its newest attack helicopter system.
OPEVAL, a three-month process of testing the AH-1Z Cobra by operating the helicopters under combat deployment conditions, was conducted in multiple environments emulating real-world scenarios. The successful completion of OPEVAL designates the aircraft suitable for use and marks the final hurdle before full-rate production approval.
The Northrop Grumman IAS onboard the AH-1Z helicopters makes critical mission data available to the pilot and co-pilot on four displays, reducing workload and increasing aircrew situational awareness. The glass cockpit is powered by two Northrop Grumman mission computers, the heart of the IAS, that allow for easy system upgrades as new technology is developed. The mission computers provide centralized control of the IAS, interface with the tactical moving map, and display health monitoring information. The AH-1Z Cobra's IAS features precision targeting and control of the weapons system with enhanced accuracy.
"The successful completion of OPEVAL moves the AH-1Z helicopters one step closer to the field, where our IAS technology is needed," said Ike Song, vice president of situational awareness systems at Northrop Grumman's Navigation Systems Division. "Increased weapons accuracy and improved situational awareness capability will help the Marines be more effective in achieving mission success and safe in the harsh environments they face."
The AH-1Z Cobra helicopters are part of the U.S. Marine Corps H-1 Upgrade Program. The program's goal is to replace AH-1W helicopters with new and remanufactured AH-1Zs which provide significant improvements in commonality, reliability and maintainability in addition to increased functionality. Northrop Grumman is part of the program's industry team, led by Bell Helicopter Textron Inc., the manufacturer of the helicopter, and includes Thales and Lockheed Martin.
The H-1 Upgrade Program offers 84 percent commonality of parts between the AH-1Z and UH-1Y helicopters, including Northrop Grumman's IAS. This commonality reduces lifecycle and training costs and decreases the logistics footprint for both aircraft. A total of 189 new and remanufactured AH-1Z helicopters are anticipated, with deliveries expected to be complete by the end of 2019.
Northrop Grumman Corporation is a global defense and technology company whose 120,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in information and services, electronics, aerospace and shipbuilding to government and commercial customers worldwide.
