Three AWACS are already operationalised in [color:5d84=#0000FF !important]the IAF and there is a proposal for procurement of two additional AWACS," Defence Minister A K Antony said in a written reply to [color:5d84=#0000FF !important]Lok Sabha.
NEW DELHI: India is planning to procure two more [color:5d84=#0000FF !important]Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) for the Indian Air Force, Lok Sabha was informed today.
"Three AWACS are already operationalised in the IAF and there is a proposal for procurement of two additional AWACS," [color:5d84=#0000FF !important]Defence Minister A K Antony said in a written reply.
He said the long-term integrated perspective plan seeks to have a mix of large AWACS aircraft and small Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system aircraft.
DRDO is also working towards developing indigenous AEW and [color:5d84=#0000FF !important]C system on the Embraer aircraft and it is expected to be completed within 84 months.
To another query, Antony said, "Due to inclement weather, heavy snow accumulation, avalanches and landslides fencing along the LoC gets damaged."
The government is aware that terrorists attempt infiltration throughout the year including during the winter months when the fence is covered by snow or repair works are in progress, he said.
Antony said additional proactive measures in terms of surveillance and troop deployment are undertaken to foil infiltration attempts. .indiatimes.com

Russian Helicopters delivers latest consignment of Mi-17B-5s to India
Russian Helicopters, part of state defence holding Oboronprom and a leading global designer and manufacturer of helicopters, has delivered another consignment of Mi-17B-5 helicopters to India as part of a contract signed by Rosoboronexport and India’s Ministry of Defence in 2008. The helicopters were built by Kazan Helicopter Plant, a Russian Helicopters company. The final delivery under the contract is scheduled for 2013. The Mi-8/17 series of helicopters is one of the symbols of Russia’s aviation industry. The latest models combine advanced technologies with the years of operational experience accumulated by their predecessors. These advanced helicopters, the best in their class, are equipped with the latest navigational and on-board systems, and maintain the high levels of reliability, simplicity and ease of operation that generations of operators have come to expect. They can fly a wide range of missions in conditions ranging from tropical and maritime climates to high altitude and desert environments. The Mi-17B-5 has been built to the requirements of the Indian Ministry of Defence. It is one of the most advanced helicopters on the global marketplace, as well as in the Indian Armed Forces. The helicopters are equipped with new VK-2500 engines that have an electronic control system and deliver enhanced power performance, which is particularly important in hot climates and at high altitudes. Should one engine fail, the reserve power provided by the second engine ensures safe operation through to landing. The on-board systems allow the helicopter to operate day and night in all weather conditions. A new navigation system has been developed for this version of the Mi-17B-5 that shows all of the piloting and navigation information on four multifunctional display screens, significantly reducing the crew’s workload. The medium multirole Mi-17 is the export version of the Mi-8. Their versatility and high performance have made these helicopters some of the most popular Russian-built helicopters around the world. More than 12 thousand Mi-8/17s are in operation in more than 110 countries. Russian Helicopters builds advanced versions of the Mi-8/17 at Kazan Helicopter Plant and Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant.
OJSC Rosoboronexport is the only enterprise in Russia with the right to export the full range of military and dual-use products, technologies and services. Rosoboronexport is one of the world’s leading arms companies, exporting more than 80% of Russian military equipment and working with more than 700 Russian enterprises and organisations in the defence sector. Russia collaborates in the military sphere with more than 70 countries. Russian Helicopters, JSC is a subsidiary of UIC Oboronprom, which in turn is a part of Russian Technologies State Corporation. It is one of the global leaders in helicopter production and the only helicopter design and production powerhouse in Russia. Russian Helicopters is headquartered in Moscow. - India Navy gets its most sophisticated warfare aircraft Boeing P-8I
The first of the eight long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft Boeing P-8I was delivered to the Indian Navy in the US. The Navy will fly three of these to India next year.
The delivery of P-8Is, the most sophisticated aircraft to be inducted into the Navy to date, has been on time unlike the other systems India is procuring from overseas including the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, which has been delayed by several years.
India, one of the first countries to select this new aircraft, had ordered eight P-8Is in January 2009 for $ 2.1 billion (Rs.11,524 crore). The delivery schedule has been maintained as the induction will take place in the stipulated time of 2013.
The P-8I s are based on Boeing's Next General 737-800 commercial airliner which has been modified for the maritime surveillance role.
The Navy, at the moment, has Tu-142 long-range maritime surveillance aircraft of the Soviet-era vintage. Flying these aircraft is no more feasible as technology has moved ahead several generations.

IAF holds exercise 'Iron Fist' in Pokhran
JAISALMER: In a breathtaking display of air power, Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft blasted away targets during day, dusk and night in a fire power demonstration, code named 'Iron Fist' at [color:cbb9=#0000FF !important]Chandan field firing range in Pokhran on Sunday. The dusk and night phases display were a first-ever by [color:cbb9=#0000FF !important]the IAF. While a Airborne Warning and Control System was used to monitor the mammoth exercise, an unmanned aerial vehicle streamed live video images of the target destruction. The air defence demonstration included firing of surface-to-air guided missiles.
Air Officer-Commanding-in-Chief, [color:cbb9=#0000FF !important]South Western Air Command, Air Marshal A K Gogoi and other senior officers witnessed the exercise. Gogoi reviewed the full dress rehearsal and gave directions on fine tuning of certain aspects.
More than 60 aircraft including frontline fighters - [color:cbb9=#0000FF !important]Mig-21 Bison, Mig-27, Mig-29, Mirage-2000, Su-30 MKI, Jaguars, Tejas LCA, transport aircraft namely Hercules, AN-32 and helicopters - Mi-17 1V and [color:cbb9=#0000FF !important]Dhruv Mi-35 participated in the exercise. Other unseen force multipliers included mid-air refuellers, AWACS and UAV. The day phase displayed the strike capability of ground attack fighter aircraft. The dusk phase displayed the war-waging capabilities of helicopters. The final phase by night showcased two major aspects of air power - counter-air operations and counter-surface operations.
[color:cbb9=#0000FF !important]A Mig-29 flying low and supersonic at 1250 kmph leaving in its wake a deafening sonic boom signalled an explosive start to the exercise. This was followed by a photo-reconnaissance mission by a formation of three Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft. Three waves of fly-past by a combination of Jaguar, Mig-21 Bison, Mig-27, Mig-29, Tejas and Mirage-2000 fighters followed before the armament delivery phase.
An array of targets including mock radar sites, tanks, marshalling yards, terrorist camps, runway, BMPs (infantry fighting vehicles), blast pens and convoys were selectively destroyed in precision attacks by IAF pilots using bombs, rockets and missiles. Both precision-guided ammunitions and conventional armament were used in the display. timesofindia.indiatimes.com

- Indian Army plans to equip 1,600 T-72 tanks with advanced night- fighting capabilities
New Delhi: The Army, having long suffered from deficiencies in night fighting electro-optical equipment, is set to make up critical deficiencies.
Following footsteps of paramilitary forces and the National Security Guard (NSG), who have gone in for accelerated purchase of night vision devices after the 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai, the armed forces are now taking steps to improve their night fighting capabilities, according to Frontier India News Network.
Army chief Gen Deepak Kapoor, had said in 2010 that “Indian Army’s tanks have a night vision capability of 20 percent while Pakistani’s have 80 percent and China has 100 percent”.
The armed forces will review their doctrine, capabilities and shortcomings and also identify latest trends and technologies at a two-day seminar “Night Vision India 2013? on 16-17 January.
The Centre for Land Warfare Studies, a think tank of the Indian Army is organising the seminar at the Air Force Auditorium here in collaboration with IMR Media, a publishing and event organising company.
Delegates from the three Services will discuss tactics, techniques, and procedures that maximize our night-fighting technological advantages while countering the enemy’s night capabilities.
The Army’s objective is to equip over 1,600 T-72 tanks which form the backbone of the country’s armoured forces, with advanced night fighting capabilities. The Army’s case for acquiring 700 TISAS (thermal imaging stand alone systems) and 418 TIFACS (thermal fire control systems) for its T-72 fleet at a cost of around $230 million is in various stages of the procurement process. 300 Israeli TISAS were imported, followed by 3,860 image intensifier-based night-vision devices. A huge requirement persists. 310 T-90S main-battle tanks (MBTs) were imported from Russia and fitted with French Catherine TI cameras.
Indian Army T-72 Ajeya Tank on Display According to Major General RK Arora, ediotr of Indian Military Review magazine, Army also requires hand held thermal imaging (HHTI) sights (with laser range finder) for infantry, armoured, air defence, artillery and engineer regiments. The infantry is also looking for TI sights for medium machine guns and sniper rifles. RFIs for night sights for AK-47 assault rifles and other small arms have also been issued.
Senior officers of the armed forces will address the delgates. Among them are Lt Gen Narendra Singh, Deputy chief of the army staff, Lt Gen Philip Campose, director general of perspective planning, Lt Gen JS Bajwa, director general Infantry and Lt Gen Vijay Sharma, engineer- in-cheif among others.
Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) is the biggest supplier of night vision equipment to the armed forces. Anil Kumar, chairman & managing director of BEL is expected to give an overview of BEL’s current and future plans.
BEL recently supplied 30,600 passive night sights for rifles, rocket launchers and light machine guns, passive night vision binoculars and passive night vision goggles to the Army but the forces remain woefully short and are looking for the latest 3rd generation technology to reduce weight and extend the life of NVDs.
The Indian Air Force has felt the need for helmet-mounted night vision goggle (NVG) for a long time. Unfortunately, these had serious drawbacks in the past. Originally designed for surface forces and subsequently modified for airlift and helicopters, they were very cumbersome and limited both the field of view and visual acuity and thus totally incompatible with fighter aircraft. Further, they were not stressed for high-G loading and were not safe to wear in an ejection.
However, NVGs now in production resolve or minimize these problems and are specifically designed for fighter aircraft. Cockpit lighting has also improved. It is expected that such NVGs would come along with Rafale as and when it enters service. With this new generation of NVGs, the fighter force would be able to provide a simple, cost-effective night vision capability that would allow the aircraft to support special operations including low intensity conflict (LIC) missions 24 hours a day. onlinenews
