Chinese secret military satellite launched into orbit By Dylan Vosman - Sep 13, 2015
A secretive satellite was launched by China from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on Saturday. Launch of the unknown spacecraft – unofficially claimed to be the Communications Engineering Test Satellite -1 (TXJSSY-1) – took place at 15:40 UTC using a Long March-3B (Chang Zheng-3B) rocket, as the Chinese continue their build up in space. There is very little information regarding the satellite, with no announcement provided in the Chinese media, despite the media heavily controlled by the Chinese government. However, rumors circling on specialized Chinese space forums point to this launch involving the first Great Wall (Changcheng) satellite – a new series of Chinese satellites dedicated to early warning similar to the American Space Based Infra-Red Sensor satellites. One unofficial source claimed the spacecraft is the Communications Engineering Test Satellite -1 (TXJSSY-1) Recently, Japan’s Kyodo News reported that China was building a missile defense system to detect a ballistic missile attack. The report was based on Chinese military documents that referred the development of an experimental early warning satellite program. Additionally the report pointed out that China had started the development of an X-band radar system as part of a ground-based interceptor system.

PLA may use electric reactive armor on tanks By Dylan Vosman - Sep 17, 2015
he People’s Liberation Army may eventually equip its main battle tanks with electric reactive armor to prevent damage from anti-tank weapons, reports China’s Global Times. Electric reactive armor is usually made of two electrical plates separated by an insulator to make a high-power capacitor. When a tank using the armor is hit by an incoming object such as a rocket or missile, it will discharge electricity from the capacitor to vaporize the object. The discharge is claimed to be powerful to turn the incoming object into plasma, said the report. From the Chinese perspective, the electric reactive armor is the best available defensive technology for tanks in the world and China is now capable of developing it, the report said. www.wantchinatimes.com

Chief designer reveals data on China's new Luoyang PL-10 AAM
Richard D Fisher Jr, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
17 September 2015
A Luoyang Electro Optic Research Institute (LEOC) PL-10 5th generation air-to-air missile on a Shenyang J-11. Source: Chinese internet
The Luoyang Electro-Optical Research Institute (LEOC) has largely competed development of its fifth-generation PL-10 short-range air-to-air missile (AAM), according to comments by the missile's designer on a Chinese TV show broadcast in late August.
The PL-10 AAM was first seen on Chinese websites in 2013 being carried on a retractable/covered pylon on the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) J-20 fifth-generation fighter. More recently it has been seen on the wingtip pylon of the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation J-11 fighter.
The TV report featured an interview with the PL-10's chief designer, Liang Xiaogeng. According to Mark Stokes of the Project 2049 research institute, Liang also served as the deputy chief designer of LEOC's PL-9C infrared/helmet-sighted AAM and as chief designer of the PL-12 self-guided medium-range AAM.
The report was unusual in that it provided significant historic and performance data about a new weapon before its unveiling at a major arms show or exhibition. For example, the report noted that the PL-10 weighs 89 kg, has a length of 3 m, and a range of 20 km. It has been in development for seven years, a prototype was completed in 2013, and since then has been test-fired 30 times.
The report also noted that the PL-10 has "world class" capabilities that include a "multi-element imaging infrared seeker with anti-jamming capabilities" and indicated that it is capable of high off-boresight attacks and has super manoeuvrability.
Images from 2013 and more recently confirm that the PL-10 uses thrust vectoring vanes in its motor exhaust. These, plus unique large aft fins with a slight forward sweep, likely confer super manoeuvrability.
Like comparable AAMs, the PL-10 probably also uses a new helmet-mounted display (HMD) sighting system.

New J-20 Stealth Fighter Prototype Undergoes Taxiing Tests
The latest prototype of the Chengdu J-20, China’s fifth-generation stealth fighter, with the temporary tail number “2016” has begun taxiing tests recently, according to Sina’s military news web portal. There are at present seven prototypes of the aircraft, which had its maiden test flight in early 2011. The main mission of the prototype with the initial tail number “2001” was to undertake a maiden flight and to test the aircraft’s aerodynamic structure and stealth capabilities. The prototype which originally had the tail number “2002” (now been repainted as “2004”) was used mainly to test avionics, as well as the hydraulics and the pneumatics of the weapons bay. Later it was also used to test bomb drops. Another two prototypes have not conducted test flights, including what is now the “2002” and the “2003,” and have likely been used for static strength tests, ground-based radar cross-section tests, fatigue tests and the “iron bird” test platform. Six prototypes have previously carried out flight tests, the “2001,” the “2002,” (now the “2004”) and the 2011, as well as three newer prototypes with the tail numbers “2012,” “2013” and “2015.” The next batch of prototypes will halt use of simulated flight systems, fly-by-wire control systems, electronic warfare systems and pneumatics, which will all be actually installed within the craft, to allow for more comprehensive test flights, according to commentators. The current J-20 prototypes are equipped with an electro-optical distributed aperture system (EODAS) similar to that of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. They are also equipped with the active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar developed for the J-20 over a number of years by the Nanjing Electronic Technology Research Institute, also known as the No. 14 Institute. The AESA radar is similar in its specs to the Northrop Grumman AN/APG-77 low probability of intercept radar installed on the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor and the AN/APG-79 developed for the US Navy’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and Boeing EA-18G Growler. The next batch of J-20 prototypes will reportedly be equipped with imported Russian AL-31FN series 3 engines. The engine’s specs are similar to the AL-31F M1 and are equipped with a full authority digital electronics control (FADEC) system. As research and development on the domestically built Xian WS-15 engine has fallen well behind, with the engine not even having undergone high-altitude test flights, it is unlikely to be installed in the first production batch of the J-20. The first batch of J-20s to enter into production will be handed over to the PLA Air Force test flight and training center in Cangzhou and will be handed over to frontline air force units in 2017. It is expected to achieve initial operational capable (IOC) status in 2019. This batch will likely be equipped with Russian-made AL31F-M2 or AL-41F1S engines until around 2020. The domestic WS-15 will likely mature in time to be installed in the second batch of J-20s to be manufactured, which will be called the J-20A. There has been continuous bad news emerging about the T-50 prototype of the Russian fifth-generation Sukhoi PAK FA fighter. The T-50 is reportedly inferior to the J-20 in terms of its avionics, the material used to make the plane and its stealth capabilities, and it iss uncertain whether it will enter service at all. Production of the US F-22 has halted after 187 planes came off the line and many of the aircraft have been grounded due to a problem with its oxygen supply systems. The F-35 has faced interminable delays and its overall capabilities do not seem to match up to the T-50, never mind the J-20. If China’s air force were to be equipped with 500 J-20s, it would rank first among the world’s air forces, according to the website. The J-20 does not currently have a carrier-based variant and China is yet to establish an overseas air base, so its primary objective will likely be to protect China’s airspace and air defense capabilities. www.defense-aerospace.com

China unveils next-gen Wing Loong II UCAV
Richard D Fisher Jr, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 18 September 2015
hengdu Aircraft Corporation revealed its second-generation Wing Loong II turboprop-powered unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) at the biennial Beijing Air Show in mid-September.
Data and images of the platform show a strong resemblance to the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) UCAV. Partial images of the UCAV seen on Chinese web pages in early March 2015 suggest that runway- or flight-testing has already started.
While the Wing Loong II name is likely its export designation, it can be expected to enter People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) units alongside the smaller Chengdu GJ-1/Wing Loong.
Both in configuration and dimensionally the Wing Loong II compares well to the MQ-9 Reaper. Both are powered by a single pusher turboprop engine, place their satellite communication system and primary optical system in the nose, and employ large V-stabilisers with a smaller vertical stabiliser below the empennage.
While almost identical in size, their performance differs - most likely due to their respective engines. While the MQ-9 has a maximum speed of 482 km/h and can reach a maximum altitude of 50,000 ft (15,240 m), the Wing Loong II has a maximum speed of 370 km/h and can reach an altitude of30,000 ft (9,000 m).
They also differ greatly in their external payload. The MQ-9 is credited with an external payload of 1,400 kg while the Wing Loong II can carry 480 kg.
A brochure image shows the Wing Loong II carrying 12 air-to-surface missiles. These are probably the 26.5 kg Norinco Blue Arrow 9 ground-attack missiles revealed at the 2014 Airshow China at Zhuhai. Multiple Chinese companies have developed families of UCAV weapons including precision-guided missiles, bombs, and air-to-air missiles.

Reuters/Wang Zhao/Pool

Russia ready to export new main battle tank T-14 Armata to China, India and Saudi Arabia.
Defense Company Uralvagonzavod of Russia, manufacturer of defense products as main battle tank is ready to look at possible exports of the new-generation tanks, T-14 Armata, to foreign buyers. The T-14 Armata is the latest generation of Russian-made main battle tank which was unveiled for the first time to the public during the military parade in Moscow, May 9, 2015.
We had a lot of talks with various delegations in the framework of the recent Russian Arms Expo (RAE-2015) - all demonstrated interest in buying these products,"Uralvagonzavod’s director general Oleg Siyenko, told the Ekho Moskvy radio station.
"But so far, it is beyond the current agenda. Our priority is to equip our own armed forces with state-of-the-art hardware. But from the point of view of the economy, undoubtedly, we would like to export these products in future."
He said among potential buyer could be countries with big defense budgets, such as China, India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar. "Sure, there is interest from Europe too," he noted.
Earlier, Russian Minister of Trade and Industry Denis Manturov said Russia was ready to discuss with its foreign partners possible supplies of Armata tanks after 2020, when Uralvagonzavod was through with the orders under the state armaments program.
The T-14 main battle tank is based on the Armata Universal Combat Platform. The Armata has more firepower than the latest generation of main battle tank T-90. The Armata is fitted with a new unmanned remote weapon station turret. Russian experts believe that the appearance of the remotely controlled gun would eventually lead to the development of a fully robotic tank which could be deployed as part of a spearhead in the offensive.
The new unmanned remote turret of Armata T-14 is equipped with new generation of 125mm 2A82-1M smoothbore gun with an automatic loader and 32 rounds ready to use. The main gun can fire also new laser-guided missile with a range from 7 to 12 km.
The T-14 Armata is equipped with the Active Protection System (APS) Afghanit which seems similar to the Israeli Trophy able to intercept and destroy incoming missiles and rockets. The system is designed to work against all types of anti-tank missiles and rockets, including handheld weapons such as rocket propelled grenades.
Air Platforms Shenyang FC-31 fighter performance 'leaked' online Richard D Fisher Jr, Washington, DC - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 20 September 2015
The posting on Chinese websites of possible performance data for the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) FC-31 fifth-generation fighter indicates it could pose a commercial threat to Western and Russian fighter manufacturers.
A modified version of SAC's J-31 technology development fighter, an FC-31 model made its second appearance at the Beijing Air Show in mid-September. However, as at its debut appearance at the November 2014 Airshow China at Zhuhai, the Aviation Industries Corporation of China (AVIC) did not provide data on the aircraft.
On 15 September FC-31 performance data was posted anonymously online. The data reads like descriptive information intended for internal Chinese distribution and was apparently deemed not sensitive enough to be deleted by China's formidable internet censors. Other sources suggest it could have been released at the Beijing Air Show.
Apparently semi-approved internet revelations of otherwise classified data happen frequently, as the J-31's gradual revelation from 2010 to 2012 illustrate. However, the unofficial nature of such data deservedly prompts questions about its credibility.
For example, in the absence of more data on the FC-31's true empty weight, internal fuel capacity, and engine efficiency, some Chinese observers questioned claims that the "internal fuel combat radius" for a fighter of its size could be as much as 1,200 km.
However, the reported maximum engine thrust figure of "88.29 kn" or 9 tons, does conform with statements made by Chinese officials to IHS Jane's at the 2015 Paris Air Show that China was testing a new 9-ton medium thrust turbofan on the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation FC-1/JF-17 fighter. Thought to be an improved version of the WS-13 Taishan turbofan reportedly developed from the Russian Klimov 8.29-ton thrust RD-33 turbofan, it will power versions of the single-engine FC-1 and the twin-engine FC-31.
The data posted online describes the FC-31 as "designed for high survivability, low radar detectability, low IR (infrared) signature, and excellent capabilities for electronic counter measures".

China Air Force’s J-11B Fighter Equipped With China-Made Engines By Chinese Government News -September 21, 2015
The PLA Air Force J-11B fighters have been equipped with China-made engines, according to Yang Dechun, a pilot assigned to a division under the PLA Air Force.
The PLA Air Force held an aviation open-day activity in Changchun, northeast China’s Jilin province, on September 10, 2015, during which a J-11B fighter of the PLA Air Force conducted three demonstration flights.
Yang Dechun introduced that, “first, the J-11B fighter flew over the reviewing stand at low altitude and high speed, which reflects its low-altitude penetration capability and successful penetration can ensure its own survival, and then, it quickly ascended and then conducted a 2.5-circle roll flight during ascending, which showcases the J-11B fighter’s lateral turning flight performance.”
“After that, the J-11B fighter made an ultimate hover demonstration at an altitude of 300 meters, which exhibits its horizontal maneuvering performance, and such a performance can allow the J-11B fighter to win the flight-attitude superiority in a short period of time,” Yang Dechun continued.
“Finally, it flew over the reviewing stand again at low altitude and low speed, which shows its slow flight performance,” Yang Dechun added.
The configuration of J-11B fighter is greatly upgraded as compared with the previous fighter models, for example, the very simple human machine interface in its cockpit possesses very powerful functions and can help pilot perform all-weather combat missions against air, sea and ground targets, Yang Dechun introduced.
Yang Dechun expressed that J-11B fighter’s fire-control system can carry China’s current most advanced short-range and medium-range air-to-air missiles, and in addition, it can also carry the new-type air-to-ground ammunition, allowing it to make a certain breakthrough in enhancing its air-to-ground attack capability.
Above all, the J-11B fighters have been equipped with China-made engines, and “Our pilots feel most proud that the J-11B fighters are equipped with completely China-made engines,” Yang Dechun said.
The biggest wish of the pilots of the PLA Air Force is that their fighters are equipped with more and better engines so as to allow the PLA Air Force’s combat capability to be further upgraded, added Yang Dechun.

China launches dual-use Long March-6 SLV
Richard D Fisher Jr, Washington, DC - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly 22 September 2015
China successfully launched its first liquid-fuelled Long March-6 (LM-6) small satellite space launch vehicle (SLV) from its Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre on 20 September.
Under concept development since 2000 by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST) of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the LM-6 was approved by the government for full development in 2009. It is intended to provide new flexibility for civil and military/space combat missions.
The initial version of the LM-6 uses a 3.35 m-long booster developed from boosters initially designed for the Long March-5 heavy space launch vehicle. The LM-6 can loft 1,080 kg to a 700 km sun-synchronous orbit (SSO). In addition to providing a low-cost SLV for civil missions, the LM-6 has a seven-day launch cycle for rapid launching to provide the People's Liberation Army (PLA) with the ability to rapidly replace satellite capabilities lost in the event of attack.
Demonstrating this capability, the first LM-6 mission used three stages to loft 20 small and nano-satellites built by Zhejiang University, Tsinghua University, the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), and other satellite makers.
Additional military missions are suggested by the LM-6's unique camouflaged transporter erector launcher (TEL) build by CASC's Tai'an Corporation, which makes TELs for CASC-made intercontinental and intermediate-range nuclear-armed ballistic missiles.
This TEL allows the LM-6 to be more rapidly transported horizontally to its launch platform and also indicates that military payload dispensers for the LM-6 can be stored horizontally in protected underground facilities for rapid assembly and launch.
The LM-6's potential for use in anti-satellite (ASAT) missions was signalled by its launch from Taiyuan, the launch location of all of China's test and demonstration ASAT missions to date.

According to China Daily, China's aviation industry is working on the development of aircraft with short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities needed for an important role in the Chinese navy's future operations, military experts said. "Research and development on components of STOVL aircraft, such as the engine, have started," Wang Ya'nan, deputy editor-in-chief of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told China Daily.

"The aircraft's principles are not new. They have been known for more than 40 years, so our aircraft designers should be able to develop the plane on their own," Wang said.
In late March, the Aviation Industry Corp of China, the country's leading aircraft maker, announced on its website that two of its subsidiaries - AVIC Chengdu Engine Group and China Aviation Engine Establishment - have signed a cooperation agreement on the development of the STOVL aircraft's engine. The statement said the STOVL aircraft project aims to strengthen the People's Liberation Army navy's amphibious combat capability and address the absence of such a weapon in the PLA's arsenal.
Compared with conventional fixed-wing aircraft, a STOVL plane can be readied for action in a shorter period of time and occupies less space in a hangar bay or on the deck of a ship. These features have made it a popular choice for naval powers since late 1960s, when Britain's subsonic Hawker Siddley Harrier became the first STOVL aircraft to be put in service.
Almost all STOVL aircraft in active service are based on the Harrier design, and they form the backbone of the naval forces of India and Spain.
This move is not the first time China has aimed to build a STOVL aircraft. In the late 1960s, the PLA asked the aircraft institutes to develop a fixed-wing plane capable of vertical takeoff and landing. The project was later abandoned due to technical difficulties.
The PLA also tried to buy the Hawker Siddley Harrier in the late 1970s, but dropped the attempt because of cost, according to Western military observers.
This time, AVIC appears to have made the right decision at the right time as the PLA navy now needs a STOVL aircraft because it will "significantly supplement and improve its amphibious capabilities", Wang said.
"Though the PLA navy now has an aircraft carrier - the CNS Liaoning - it still lacks the experience of developing and manufacturing such a sophisticated naval platform, so there won't be more carriers in the short term," Wang said. "Let's assume that a conflict breaks out between China and another nation in the near future; the PLA navy's limited number of carrier-borne fighter jets, the J-15s, would have to engage in long-distance strikes as well as air defense for the carrier battle group, and they would have to be divided into small groups to perform these tasks simultaneously."
If China had STOVL aircraft, they could be deployed on the CNS Liaoning and other ships to defend against incoming enemy aircraft, relieving the burden on the J-15s, which could then focus on long-range operations, Wang said.
"Actually, in the foreseeable future, I don't see a high probability of China's involvement in a war far from its shores. Being dragged into limited amphibious conflicts in or near our territorial waters would be more likely. The STOVL aircraft will be the best choice for air support in such conflicts," Wang said, noting that it would be a perfect match for China's future amphibious assault ships.
n China spotted secret armored personnel carrier By Dylan Vosman - Sep 26, 2015
In China spotted secret armored personnel carrier. The new China armored personnel carrier have special design to withstand improvised explosive device (IED) attacks and ambushes. Engine armored vehicles located in front of the right side. Nearby is the separation of management, which, like many MRAP, to improve visibility provided with bulletproof. In this area, other than the driver, apparently, can fit another fighter.
