VICTORVILLE, Calif., March 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — The second Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 Dreamliner, ZA002, landed at 10:53 a.m. local time today in Victorville, Calif. This marks the beginning of the first flight-test operations outside of Washington state for the program.
The airplane will be stationed at Victorville for approximately three weeks. The crew will conduct ground effects testing among other activities.
During ground effects testing, the pilots fly the airplane very close to the runway to gather data regarding the aerodynamic effects and performance of the airplane during the takeoff and landing phases of flight. Quantifying this performance is part of the certification requirements for all new airplanes.
“Victorville’s airfield is the former George Air Force Base,” said Randy Neville, chief pilot for ZA002. “There is ample ramp space for parking and plenty of on-site facilities. There is a long runway and plenty of level, clear land along the approach to the runway. We can operate there without disrupting air traffic control or other commercial aircraft.”
A crew of more than 150 employees will be stationed at Victorville while the airplane is there. These include the flight test engineers and support personnel required to prepare the airplane for each day’s flights and to monitor performance and test equipment.
“Our confidence in the reliability of this airplane grows day by day,” said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. “Taking the airplane out of state for the first time is a big step, but one we’re ready for.”

« Nous avons fait une quantité importante d'essais au sol sur les nouveaux systèmes sur ZA003 en préparation pour le premier vol. Le service d’ingénierie, la fabrication et les opérations aériennes ont vraiment poussé en équipe pour permettre ce premier vol », a déclaré Craig.
ZA003 est le seul appareil d’essai équipé d’éléments de finition intérieure. Parmi ces éléments, il y a l’éclairage, bacs de rangement, hublots électro-chromatique et des toilettes.

Pour être considéré comme réussi le test, effectué sur la cellule statique ZY997, devait supporter 150% du chargement maximum que l’aile peut subir en service pendant au moins 4 secondes. Il semble que Boeing n’ait pas dépassé 150% contrairement à celui du 777, qui était allé jusqu’à la rupture de l’aile, soit environ 154%.
Selon le constructeur, l’aile a fléchi jusqu’à 7,6 mètres (25 pieds) de hauteur et n’a pas rompue. Les résultats initiaux sont positifs et une analyse plus exhaustive du test sera faite dans les prochaines semaines pour confirmer le succès de celui-ci.
« Le programme d'essai statique a été plus robuste que n’importe quel autre effectué sur un avion commercial de Boeing », a déclaré Scott Fancher, vice-président de Boeing et directeur général du programme 787. « Il a fallu d'innombrables heures de travail de l'équipe de Boeing et de nos partenaires. Tous ceux qui ont été impliqués dans cet effort au cours des dernières années devraient être très fiers de leur contribution pour assurer la sécurité du 787 Dreamliner. The class consisted of 10 mechanics from 787 launch customer ANA (All Nippon Airways) and two regulators from the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB).
The mechanics, who completed the training last week, are the first of 150 ANA mechanics to be trained by Boeing over the next seven months. They spent more than 30 days learning how to maintain the world’s most advanced commercial jetliner, including 20 days of theoretical training, two days of engine runs and taxi testing, five days of practical training and five days of troubleshooting exercises. To conclude the training, students conducted component identification exams on production airplanes, as well as troubleshooting exams in the full flight simulator.
To support the all-new 787, Boeing Training & Flight Services, a division of Commercial Aviation Services, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, has developed an all-digital, Internet-based teaching system for maintenance training, along with training tools that connect real-time to a virtual airplane and airplane systems.
“Getting our mechanics trained and prepared is essential to being ready to take delivery of the airplane later this year,” said Michihide Kono, vice president of Engineering and Maintenance for ANA. “This is an important milestone for our ANA team and we are delighted to see the continued progress on the program.”
The curriculum is designed to focus on performance-based training that incorporates real-world simulated maintenance scenarios for a more immersive training experience.
“The use of personal tablet computers, interactive computer-based training, three-dimensional images and desktop simulation makes it possible to deliver training more efficiently,” said Sherry Carbary, vice president of Boeing Training & Flight Services, Commercial Aviation Services, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Our team is committed to providing our customers with the resources and tools they need to be successful.”
The 787 comes with digital tools and databases that replace volumes of printed materials. The graphic and textual database has point-and-click features for more details, allowing mechanics to navigate through documents quickly to get the information they need to do their jobs.

An engineless ZA005 rolled out of Paint Hangar 45-03 yesterday afternoon in Everett, WA sporting a fresh livery. This particular 787 will be the first powered by General Electric GEnx-1B engines. When it went to the paintshop on July 9th, the aircraft had a rudder formerly painted in the colors of Royal Air Maroc, the original customer for the fifth and sixth flight test aircraft. The paint scheme of ZA005, now registered N787FT, is a simplified version of the Dreamliner scheme's wave and a blue tail similar to that of ZA006. Sources say the aircraft is expected to return to the factory shortly at position three inside Building 40-26.

Thirteen Dreamliners to be covered under full portfolio GoldCare Enterprise

VALPARAISO, Fla., April 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — The Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 Dreamliner has begun a series of extreme-weather tests at Valparaiso, Fla. A special hangar at the McKinley Climatic Laboratory at Eglin Air Force Base allows the airplane to experience heat as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 Celsius) and as low as minus 45 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 43 Celsius).
After the airplane is stabilized at either the hot or cold temperatures, flight test technicians will follow the Airplane Maintenance Manual to perform the steps required to prepare the airplane for flight release and operate under these conditions. Sensors and monitors will allow the test team to determine if all systems hardware and software operate as expected.
Cold-weather testing is being conducted first, with preliminary hot-weather testing to follow. Additional extreme-weather testing will be conducted later in the flight test program.
We have Dreamliner customers who will operate the 787 in a wide variety of environments throughout the world,” said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “This testing is about ensuring that the airplane meets the expectations of our customers.”

Continental Airlines today announced another major step in development of its Houston hub with plans to begin nonstop Boeing 787 flights to Auckland, New Zealand on Nov. 16, 2011 (subject to government approval).
Continental is the first airline in the world to formally announce specific, initial route plans for its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. The airline has firm orders for 25 Dreamliners. The 787 is a new-technology composite aircraft with lower operating costs, better environmental performance and an improved cabin environment for customer comfort. Deliveries to Continental are expected to begin in August 2011. The aircraft will have 228 seats, including 36 of Continental’s new flat-bed BusinessFirst seats for the best rest on long-distance flights.
Today Continental also unveiled a modernized and expanded customer check-in facility in Terminal C at its Houston hub at Bush Intercontinental Airport.
“Our new route to Auckland and our new and upgraded facilities at IAH are tangible examples of the emphasis we place on continuing to expand Houston’s role in domestic and international aviation,” said Jeff Smisek, Continental’s chairman, president and CEO. “This hub has ongoing growth opportunities because it has a strategic location, space for expansion, support from the community and an excellent team of Continental co-workers who deliver our clean, safe and reliable service.”

Boeing Elects to Conduct Inspections on 787s Before Flying

EVERETT, Wash., June 24, 2010 – Boeing [NYSE:BA] recently identified a workmanship issue with the 787’s horizontal stabilizers. Some airplanes have issues with improperly installed shims and the torque of associated fasteners. This finding requires inspection of all airplanes and rework if discrepancies are found.
An inspection and rework plan already is implemented for airplanes in production. For those airplanes requiring rework, we expect it will take up to eight days for each airplane. It is not unusual for these issues to arise in the course of production programs – they are identified, dispositioned and dealt with through our normal processes.
Reports that the fleet is “grounded” are incorrect. Boeing has made the decision to inspect the horizontal stabilizers on all flight test airplanes before their next flights to ensure any rework is completed as quickly as possible. Inspections are expected to take one to two days.
We expect that this issue will be addressed within the existing program schedule. The 787 remains on track for first delivery to ANA by the end of this year.

Après les révélations émanant d'un journal américain, Boeing a reconnu qu'un problème existait sur le plan horizontal fixe du 787. Le constructeur a identifié des défauts sur les stabilisateurs horizontaux; des rivets étaient semble-t-il mal fixés et installés. Il en a résulté un clouage au sol des avions de test pendant quelques jours.
Boeing a décidé de conduire une inspection exhaustive de tous les avions qui pourraient potentiellement être concernés. Pour les avions en production, un plan a été mis en oeuvre pour palier à ces problèmes. Boeing pense pouvoir effectuer le travail supplémentaire en environ huit jours.
Bien que l'identification et la résolution de ce souci en amont soient une chose positive, on ne peut que s'inquiéter des éventuelles retombées au niveau du planning de certification et de livraison mis en place par l'avionneur.
Boeing précise néanmoins que la date de première livraison à ANA est toujours prévue pour la fin de l'année. Cependant, rien n'est dit quant aux livraisons suivantes et l'industrialisation de la production du 787.

EVERETT, Wash., July 1 — Boeing today announced the completion of firm configuration for the 787-9 Dreamliner. Boeing reached this milestone after years of collaboration with airline customers and partners to determine the optimal configuration for the new stretch version of the Dreamliner.
“Firm configuration means the airplane’s structural, propulsion and systems architectures are defined and not changing,” said Mark Jenks, vice president of 787-9 development, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
Boeing has completed the trade studies required to finalize the airplane’s overall capability and basic design, allowing the airplane manufacturer and its suppliers to begin detailed design of parts, assemblies and other systems for the 787-9. As detailed designs are completed and released, production can begin. The first 787-9 delivery is scheduled for late 2013.
“We have a disciplined process in place to ensure we have completed all of the requirements for the development stage of the program,” said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The team has done a fantastic job to get us through this important milestone.”
The 787-9 is the second member of the 787 family. A slightly bigger version of the 787-8, the airplane will seat 250-290 passengers, 16 percent more than the 787-8. The 787-9 will have a range of 8,000 to 8,500 nautical miles (14,800 to 15,750 km).
“We have been working closely with our customers for years to reach this milestone,” said Mark Jenks, vice president of 787-9 development. “We are excited about the performance and capability this airplane will offer our customers.”
The 787 Dreamliner is an all-new twinjet designed to meet the needs of airlines around the world in providing nonstop service between midsize cities with new levels of efficiency. The airplane will bring improved levels of comfort to passengers with larger windows, bigger baggage bins and advances in the cabin environment, including lower cabin altitude, higher humidity and cleaner air. Delivery of the first 787 is planned for the fourth quarter of 2010.

Cependant, selon une source liée au programme, ce premier vol d’une durée de 64 minutes a été écourté par une fuite de liquide de refroidissement du système électrique de l’appareil. Boeing n’a toutefois pas confirmé l’incident.

Les capitaines Christine Walsh et Bill Roberson étaient aux commandes de l’avion.
« C'est génial de voir notre dernier avion d'essais en vol se joindre à la flotte, » a déclaré Scott Fancher, vice-président et directeur général du programme 787. « Nous nous sommes concentré sur l'achèvement des essais nécessaires pour la certification du 787 avec des moteurs Rolls-Royce, parce que c'est le premier modèle que nous livrerons. Une grande partie des tests que nous avons fait avec les moteurs Rolls-Royce s'applique également au 787 avec des moteurs GE et n'auront pas besoin d'être répétés, » a-t-il ajouté.
Le programme d’essais a maintenant dépassé 1900 heures sur 620 vols. 65% des essais en vol du 787 avec motorisation Rolls-Royce a été complété.

Après l'incendie d'origine électrique qui avait cloué au sol les 787, une modification temporaire a été installée pour permettre à la flotte de Dreamliner de reprendre l'air.

Depuis le début de feu d'origine électrique découvert sur un appareil de test en approche à Laredo au texas au début du mois de novembre, aucun Boeing 787-8 n'avait revolé, jusqu'à ce que la raison de l'incendie ait été trouvée. Boeing annonce donc que les essais en vol ont repris sur le Dreamliner.
Une solution provisoire a été mise en place pour démontrer que l'avion peut voler. Une nouvelle version du logiciel de distibution de l'électricité a été installé et les équipes ont conduit une batterie de tests pour s'assurer de la validité de la modification. La vérification, qui comprend des essais en laboratoire des composants, des essais sur l'intégration avec les autres systèmes ou des tests sur le simulateur de vol et sur l'avion réel au sol, s'est terminée en début de semaine sous l'égide d'Hamilton Sundstrand, le fournisseur de l'équipement (une filiale d'United Technologies).
Boeing précise enfin que, même si ses Dreamliner ont été cloués au sol pendant plus d'un mois, la campagne de certification ne s'est pas arrêtée, et les essais au sol ont pu continuer.
Cet événement aura un impact sur les avions à livrer aux clients et Boeing prévoit d'annoncer un nouveau programme de livraison au mois de janvier 2011. Lors du salon de Farnborough, les responsables de Boeing juraient que la première livraison interviendrait dans les tous premiers jours de 2011 avant de se rétracter quelques semaines plus tard. L'avion ne devrait maintenant pas être livré avant le second trimestre 2011.

La cabine est actuellement en configuration domestique avec 252 sièges économiques et 12 sièges en classe affaire pour les premiers vols intérieurs mais sera reconfigurée avec la cabine court-courrier internationale, de 180 sièges en classe économique et 42 en classe affaire, lorsque l’appareil entrera officiellement en service sur la ligne Tokyo-Hong Kong.
