Defense News June 2022 Global Security army industry
POSTED ON THURSDAY, 09 JUNE 2022 15:04
According to Tamir Eshel in Defense Update, the Directorate of Production and Procurement (DOPP) in the Israel Ministry of Defense will purchase hundreds of combat vehicles from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for the use of the Special Forces units.
The ‘Negeva’ Z-Mag is displayed outside IAI’s new land division production center in Beer Sheba. Note the Zibar and three armored variants, lined up in the background. (Picture source: Israeli MOD)
ZMAG is an all-terrain light reconnaissance vehicle designed for ground forces. Part of the Elta's Z-Family of rugged off-road multipurpose 4X4 vehicles, ZMAG is built to withstand the harshest environmental conditions and offers outstanding off-road performance. With a powerful and robust engine and highly reliable automatic transmission, together with a highly ruggedized suspension system, the ZMAG can transport soldiers (up to 14 seating capacity) and large payloads at considerable speed and stability over sand dunes, rocky trails, swamps and streams, making it an extremely reliable platform for maneuvering forces.
The vehicle design is based on commercial components, ensuring the reliability and availability of spare parts at an affordable cost. The ZMAG can be fitted with either a V8 gasoline engine that produces 500 Nm torque or a diesel engine. It can take on side angles of up to 65˚, and climb a 100% slope (90°). One of its unique features is its ability to carry a payload as heavy as the vehicle itself: 2.5 tonnes.
According to Avi Dadon, Deputy Director General and Head of the DOPP in the Ministry of Defense, “The commando combat vehicle project being launched today is the best possible reflection of the Ministry of Defense’s work. This agreement will enhance the export potential for these unique tools and technologies”. The vehicles will be manufactured at the IAI’s Land Division production line in Beer Sheba. The Armored Group (TAG), an international vehicle manufacturer based in the USA, is also part of the program, TAG, providing some of the components, Tamir Eshel reports.
The Z family includes the Zibar, Z-MAG – a light version, an ultra-light platform designated ZD, and a heavier one offering armored off-road capabilities.
IDF's special forces will receive Z-MAG, which IAI-Elta will manufacture at a new plant in Beersheba. (Picture source: Israel Aerospace Industries)

Resurrection of The Phoenix Squadron
In August 2022, the Zroa Ha’Avir Ve Ha’halal (Heyl Ha’Avir, Israeli Air and Space Force) reactivated the 144 Tayeset The Phoenix Squadron at Hatzor air base (Israel). As part of the new established “Storm Clouds Division”, a division comprised of Unmanned Combat Air Systems (UCAS), the “Phoenix” squadron will be the first unit to operate the Hermes 450 Zik as new and advanced aircraft in the IAF. The “Storm Clouds Division” with the Hermes 450 Zik as its main asset, is expected to provide capabilities to the aerial and ground units of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) and the Israeli Navy. The 144 Squadron constitutes a breakthrough for capabilities of the IAF and IDF as a whole and will operate a multi-armed anti-tank missile system. The squadron was originally surrected as “Guards of the Arava Squadron“ in 1972 flying the IAI Nesher fighter aircraft. In 1978 these were replaced by the IAI Kfir C2. In 1983 the older Kfir C2s were replaced by the IAI Kfir C7. In the period 1995 till 2005, the squadron was renamed as “The Phoenix Squadron” and flew former USAF F-16A/B Netz aircraft from Hatzor AB. In 2005, the squadron was deactivated.
Scramble Magazine reported on 15 November 2020 that the IAF decided to use Hatzor air base for the operation of the UCAS. The Military Censor allowed Israeli media to publish one of the country’s secrets; the IAF and the IDF uses armed UCAS aircraft as part of its offensive capabilities. Israel has used armed drones to strike numerous targets over the years, as early as in the 2006 War in Lebanon and the 2008 War in the Gaza Strip. The IDF uses several UCAS models, developed by the Elbit Systems and the Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) defence firms, that are capable of launching guided missiles. In the near future 200 Tayeset The First UAV Squadron flying IAI Heron Shoval aircraft will move to Hatzor to supplement the “Storm Clouds Division”.

On January 9, 2022, Army Recognition published that the first picture of the Israeli-made Sigma 155mm 10x10 wheeled self-propelled howitzer has been released on the Twitter account of Caesar (@Ninja998998). The Sigma is a new generation of 155mm 10x10 wheeled self-propelled howitzer designed and developed by the Israeli company Elbit Systems. In August 2021, Army Recognition reported that Elbit Systems had developed a new truck-mounted 155mm self-propelled howitzer to meet a need of the Israeli army. Nowadays, wheeled howitzers become very popular for all armies in the world offering the advantage of being lighter and more easily deployable by fast reaction units using military transport aircraft. It also offers a high level of mobility and simplified logistics. The Roem/Sigma 155 mm self-propelled howitzer is based on a modified American-made Oshkosh 10x10 military truck chassis with an armored cabin at the front that can provide ballistic and mine protection for the crew. The rear part of the Sigma is fitted with a turret-mounted artillery system consisting of a 155 mm/52 caliber barrel with a fully automatic loading system. According to Janes, the Sigma is equipped with a remotely-controlled automatic loading system that sets the fuze and loads the projectile; the Uni-Modular Artillery Charge System (UMACS) with the primers will then be automatically loaded via a separate magazine. The vehicle has a crew of three. Depending on the mission, SIGMA is capable of automatically selecting and loading the required projectile, propellant and fuze and laying the gun to optimally engage targets. According to Janes' website, the Sigma is equipped with a remotely-controlled weapon station including an automatic loading system that sets the fuze, and loads the projectile; the Uni-Modular Artillery Charge System (UMACS) with the primers will be automatically loaded via a separate magazine. In November 2021, Elbit Systems announced a contract valued at approximately $106 million to supply Sigmas to an undisclosed country in Asia-Pacific.

Israel Defense Force gets 50 new Plasan SandCat armored vehicles for West Bank raids
POSTED ON FRIDAY, 25 NOVEMBER 2022 15:01
According to Emanuel Fabian in the Times of Israel on November 25, the Israeli Defense Ministry announced it has procured 50 armored vehicles for the Israel Defense Force (IDF) to use in its near-nightly raids across the West Bank. Israeli troops have repeatedly come under Palestinian fire during the operations. The Israeli Defense ministry says the Plasan ‘Sand Cat’ vehicles were obtained through an “expedited” order, amid the West Bank operations.
Newly IDF-acquired Plasan SandCat armored vehicle based on a Ford F-550 (Picture source: Plasan)
The SandCat is a composite armored vehicle designed by the then Plasan Sasa (now Plasan) of Israel. The SandCat was shown publicly for the first time at AUSA during October 2005. The latest models were shown for the first time at Eurosatory 2018. The SandCat is based on a commercial Ford F Series chassis. They are The SandCat was designed from 2004 and for a variety of applications. It was seen as a potential replacement for the AIL Storm jeeps of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and for wider use as protected light vehicle capable of performing roles on deployed operations that until the deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan previously been performed by softskin light utility types. Plasan has also stated the design was intended to demonstrate to partner-customer OEMs that the company could take any automotive platform and design an armoured hull for it.
The original SandCat was designed around an approximate 4,000 kg gross vehicle weight (GVW) and four-man crew, although following feedback from early evaluations this was revised to around 5,000 kg and four- to five-man crew. The SandCat's then unusual and distinct trapezoidal side windows were optimised to reduce the mass of the heavy armoured glass, while maximising useful viewing angles. Now widely adopted, these were an early and distinct design feature of the SandCat, as was a feline theme in the design aesthetics.
The SandCat was originally known as Caracal, but by Eurosatory 2006 the name SandCat had been adopted so as not to encourage confusion between the Plasan product and the version of IVECO’s LMV being offered to the German Bundeswehr as Caracal by the now Rheinmetall Vehicle Systems Division.
Most SandCats are fully enclosed, although some first- and second-generation models were produced with a small open-topped rear cargo spaceknown to be in service with at least 16 users across five continents, and in a wide variety of roles that range from Police/internal security to combat/patrol.

Technical data
The SandCat is based on a well-proven Ford Super Duty commercial pick-up chassis to reduce life cycle costs, and automotive used in all SandCat generations have remained standard Ford wherever possible.
Automotives used in all SandCat generations have remained standard Ford wherever possible, the latest fourth-generation models powered by a Ford PowerStroke 6.7-litre V8 diesel developing 330 hp and coupled to a Ford TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission. Standard F550 drive axles are retained, however the front coil and rear leaf springs plus the brakes are uprated/tuned to suit operating weight. On second-generation models, the rear leaf springs were swapped for a Plasan-designed coil spring and trailing arm set-up. Some elements of the electrical system are upgraded to suit specific requirements, with 24 V available if required.
The overall design of the SandCat is such that it can be adapted to perform a wide range of military and Police/internal security-related missions. The original SandCat featured a four- or five-seat protected crew citadel, having two doors on each side plus two rear doors in the crew citadel that open into an open-topped rear stowage area. This stowage area which could be covered if required is open-topped to save weight. First-generation ‘station wagon’ vehicles for Sweden could seat eight in an extended fully enclosed rear body. Second-generation models could seat up to five (Utility) or eight (Transport/TPV). Third-generation models seat up to 10.
Fourth-generation models, which are described by the manufacturer as having a more flexible and modular architecture, are available in three core configurations. The Troop Carrier which seats up to 10 is fully enclosed. The Utility has a fully armored crew-type cab that seats up to five, while the Single Cab option seats up to three. In both instances, the rear of the chassis is available for a variety of payload options. Given the inherent adaptability of the base platform and the modularity of the SandCat’s design, other configurations are possible.
In terms of styling for recognition, for the first time, there are no visible Ford parts on the vehicle’s exterior, the bonnet now a Plasan design. The new front has been designed to allow for localization or alternative identities. The default is a new interpretation of the feline SandCat grille first introduced on the second-generation model. A new window design has allowed for greater commonality across variants, there now being four unique glass shapes as opposed to eight on third-generation SandCats. The previous window designs remain available on request.
Plasan refers to SandCat’s armoring as a kitted hull, consisting of a selection of overlapping bolted and bonded (not welded) panels. Armor composition has not been disclosed but is understood to include a steel base layer with a mix of internal/external aluminum, composite/ceramic, and Kevlar components. The advantages of a bolted/bonded construction are stated to be ease of repair following damage, the option to upgrade parts or all of the protection as new technologies emerge, plus the ability to swap out specific panels to reconfigure a vehicle. An example here might be replacing a solid roof panel for one with a hatch and/or the ability to mount a weapon station. Firing ports for the crew are standard.
A key differentiator between the fourth and all previous SandCat generations is the latest generation’s option of a monocoque body. This variant, the Mine-resistant Light Patrol Vehicle (M-LPV) is the first SandCat engineered as a fully structural monocoque. It retains the Ford F550 automotives but the ladder frame chassis is no longer required, the engine/gearbox utilizing a sub-frame assembly that bolts to the monocoque. The key benefit of the monocoque design is a greater level of underbody blast protection without increasing the height, center of gravity, or weight of comparably configured base vehicles. A stated advantage of the monocoque is that a custom wheelbase can be selected without the associated engineering challenges of shortening any chassis.
Internally on both variants, ballistic protection is augmented by spall lines, while underbody blast protection is augmented by a floating floor, proprietary foot pads and Plasan’s own blast-attenuating seats. The interior has two-zone air-conditioning as standard and can be fitted with an NBC filtration system if required. Additional external protection options available for both versions of the fourth-generation SandCat include a radiator, front wings, and critical engine components. A selection of internal and/or external manual or automatic fire suppression systems can be fitted to provide protection in areas such as the engine compartment, crew compartment, wheel arches, fuel tank and so on. At a lower level, mesh screens are available for all lighting and glazing.
Given the wide variety of variants and configurations available, the options list for the SandCat is extensive. Equipment and fittings options can include: a GPS system, rifle holders, trailer tow hitch, weapon station (manual or remote), run-flat inserts, electric self-recovery winch, front-axle air-actuated differential lock, external searchlight, public address system, siren, roof-mounted flashing lights, external cameras, a non-slip coating on certain external surfaces, 24 V electrical circuit, blackout lighting, bull bars, and assault ladders to allow the dismounts access to the upper floor of buildings or similar. The SandCat is reported to have excellent handling and acceleration for an armored vehicle.

Israeli request for airpower!
According to Israeli sources, the Israeli Ministry of Defence (MoD) recently requested for 25 Boeing F-15IA Strike Eagle II (F-15EX) fighter aircraft. In August 2021, Scramble Magazine first wrote on the quest for new F-15IAs for the Heyl Ha’Avir (IAF, Israeli Air Force).
The MoD have sent a Letter of Request (LOR) to the US government. The LOR is the first step fort he purchase of military hardware and equipment through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process, after which details on numbers and pricing are negotiated.
The earliest deliveries of the F-15IA are expected in 2028, but the Israeli government may ask the US to condense that timeline.
The IAF not only plans a new squadron of F-15IA (Israel Advanced) fighters, but they also want to upgrade the existing fleet of around 25 F-15I Ra’am to the same level as the new F-15IA, which would then receive the designation F-15I+.
According to Boeing Defense, the F-15EX has the capability to carry more weapons than any other fighter in its class and can launch hypersonic weapons up to 22 feet long and weigh up to 7,000 lbs. The IAF expresses an urgent need for more F-15s that can be loaded with some specific types of weapon systems developed in Israel to destroy hardened targets.
As advertised by Boeing Defense, the F-15IA will include the most powerful computer flying in the air and in space today and the most powerful AESA radar. In addition, the F-15IA and F-15I+ will be equipped with premium Israeli technologies such as a fly-by-wire flight control system, AESA radar, a missile approach warning system, a huge touchscreen cockpit display and a digital helmet-mounted display, ensuring a perfect view of the tactical situation in the air and on the ground.
According to a Israeli defence source budget limitations may affect the ‘scope’ of the F-15I upgrade.

The F-35 Lightning II program in the Israel Air Force (IAF) has made significant strides in advancing the country's air superiority capabilities. Recently, the IAF welcomed three new F-35 aircraft, which joined the prestigious 140 "Golden Eagle" Squadron stationed at the Nevatim Air Base. With this addition, the total number of Israeli Lightning II fighter jets reached 39. Notably, the first jets were declared operational in 2017, showcasing the IAF's commitment to modernizing its fleet. The Air Force's ambitious plan is to expand its fleet to 75 F-35 aircraft, with the intention of forming three specialized squadrons.
Conventionally, the aircraft's armament is installed internally to preserve its stealth capabilities. However, Dan Arkin reports, a test flight conducted by the IAF showcased the successful integration of heavy external armament, specifically the JDAM 84 bomb, under the wings of the aircraft. This demonstration highlighted the exceptional engineering cooperation between the IAF and Lockheed Martin.
Globally, the F-35 program has made a significant impact, with a total of 945 aircraft currently in operation across the world. Cumulatively, these aircraft have amassed an astounding 691,000 flight hours, further attesting to the reliability and performance of the Lightning II. The F-35s are presently deployed in 39 bases and carriers, spanning nine different countries, and have become a formidable force in modern air warfare.
The advantages of the F-35 Lightning II for the Israel Air Force are manifold. Its advanced sensor suite and data fusion capabilities enable superior situational awareness and decision-making, crucial elements in gaining a tactical edge in the battlefield. The multi-role capabilities of the F-35 allow the IAF to conduct various mission types with a single platform, streamlining logistics and maintenance efforts. Additionally, the aircraft's interoperability with other advanced systems within the IAF facilitates seamless joint operations and enhances information sharing, further enhancing the Air Force's combat effectiveness. The operational successes of the F-35 in the IAF have been noteworthy, with instances where the aircraft demonstrated its prowess in both air-to-ground and air-to-air missions. Planned upgrades and enhancements will further improve the aircraft's capabilities.

US delivers first landing craft INS Nahshon to Israel Navy
Naval News August 2023 Navy Forces Maritime Defense Industry POSTED ON THURSDAY, 10 AUGUST 2023 12:49
According to information published by the IDF on August 10, 2023, the Israeli Navy celebrated the flag-raising and receipt of the INS Nahshon landing craft at the Pascagoula Shipyard in the U.S.

The INS Nahshon is a sizeable vessel, measuring about 95 meters in length and 20 meters in width, with a weight surpassing 2500 tons. It can house many naval personnel, a significant portion of whom are female, and is commanded by a Lieutenant Commander.
These landing crafts play an essential role in modernizing the Israeli Navy's operations. They are designed for transporting troops and equipment and will enhance cooperation among various segments of the Israeli Navy, the Technological and Logistics Directorate (J4), and other branches of the IDF.
The development of the INS Nahshon, a joint project between the IDF and the Ministry of Defense, began roughly four years ago. Its acquisition was facilitated by funding provisions from the U.S. to Israel. With the flag-raising, the vessel has taken a step closer to its integration into the Israeli Navy.
The INS Nahshon will soon undergo final preparations, including crew training and operational tests. It is anticipated to dock in Israel in the coming months and is slated to be operational by 2024.
Israeli-US relations
Over the years, the Israeli Navy has deepened its cooperation with the U.S. in areas like naval ship design and funding. A testament to this is the development of the Sa'ar 5 corvettes.
In the 1980s, Israel, aiming to boost its naval prowess, partnered with the U.S. company, Bath Iron Works, to design the Sa'ar 5 corvettes. These compact vessels are equipped with stealth capabilities. U.S. military aid played a significant role in funding this project, facilitating their acquisition for Israel.
