The Bangladeshi military will receive new equipment as part of a 10-year modernization program. Bangladesh's Planning Minister Air Vice Marshal A.K. Khandker (ret.) stated that the effort to purchase new equipment is on track. Orders will be placed for new armored vehicles during the current fiscal years. The Bangladeshi Army wants seven tanks and an armored recovery vehicle. The Bangladeshi Army has various foreign-made armored vehicles. This fleet includes 1,080 Russian-built BTR-80 and BTR-70 wheeled armored vehicles, as well as 60 Egyptian-made Fahd 28s and several Turkish and Romanian 6x6 RN-94 armored personnel carriers (APCs). Bangladesh Navy Orders Two AgustaWestland AW109 Power Helicopters
Released on Monday, February 15, 2010
Bangladesh Navy Orders Two AgustaWestland AW109 Powers AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is pleased to announce the award of a contract by the Bangladesh Navy for two AW109 Power maritime helicopters. The helicopters will be used for a wide range of naval missions including search and rescue, economic zone protection, surface surveillance and maritime security. The aircraft will be delivered in 2011 and will be capable of being operated from the frigate BNS Bangabandhu. The contract also includes a comprehensive training package including VFR/IFR conversion for aircrew, initial operational maritime training using an AW109 Power Level-D flight simulator and training for maintenance engineers.
Graham Cole, Managing Director, AgustaWestland said "We are delighted that the Bangladesh Navy has selected the AW109 Power to meet its maritime helicopter requirements after a thorough evaluation of all available platforms. We look forward to delivering the helicopters and the comprehensive training and support solution we have tailored specifically to meet the requirements of the Bangladesh Navy." The AW109 Power is a 3 ton class eight seat helicopter powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW206C engines with FADEC. The spacious cabin is designed to be fitted with a number of modular equipment packages for quick and easy conversion between roles. The aircraft's safety features include a fully separated fuel system, dual hydraulic boost system, dual electrical systems and redundant lubrication and cooling systems for the main transmission and engines.
The AW109 Power has established itself as the world's best selling light-twin helicopter for maritime missions. The AW109 Power's superior speed, capacity and productivity combined with reliability and ease of maintenance make it the most cost effective maritime helicopter in its class. For shipboard operations the aircraft has a reinforced-wheeled landing gear and deck mooring points as well as extensive corrosion protection measures. The ability to operate from small ships in high sea state enables the AW109 Power to perform its mission when many others helicopters would be confined to the ship's hangar. Over 550 AW109 Power and AW109 LUH helicopters have been ordered for commercial, parapublic and military applications by customers in almost 50 countries.

Leeds Castle et Dumbarton Castle vendus au Bengladesh

End of era as Falkland ships are sold off to Bangladeshi navy
Two former navy patrol ships have been sold off to Bangladesh. HMS Leeds Castle left Portsmouth harbour yesterday, while HMS Dumbarton Castle will head off next Monday, weather depending.
They will go to Newcastle for a short refit before being handed over to the Bangladeshi government later in the summer. There had been some speculation that the ships were being handed to Bangladesh as a gift as part of a UK aid package. But this has been denied by the Ministry of Defence, which said the Bangladeshi government had bought the ships.
A spokeswoman said: 'Funds for the acquisition will be transferred from the Bangladeshi Government to the UK Government at the agreed time.
'This project is a further example of successful co-operation involving the government of Bangladesh and the UK government.'
Both ships were involved in patrolling the waters around the Falkland Islands after the war in 1982, before completing duties elsewhere.
HMS Leeds Castle was decommissioned in 2005 after a 24-year history including involvement in the Falklands War as a dispatch vessel, protecting Britain's fishery industry, and then returning to the Falklands to patrol the waters there.
HMS Dumbarton Castle was taken out of service in 2008 after protecting oil and gas installations as well as fisheries.
But her long association with the Falkland Islands resulted in the ship's company being given permission to add her name to the roll of honour written in white rocks on the hillside opposite Stanley in 2007.
The two Portsmouth ships are not the only ones being sold off to Bangladesh.
They will join the survey and minesweeper support ship HMS Roebuck, based at Devonport, Plymouth, in the Bangladeshi navy.
She was decommissioned in April after 24 years of service which saw her play a pivotal role at Umm Qasr Port following the second Gulf War, helping coalition ships and helicopters access the port more quickly.
The MoD spokeswoman added: 'The sale of these ships will continue to build on the already strong relationship between the UK and Bangladesh.'

Army to get 44 tanks
For the first time in the country's history, the government will purchase 44 new tanks and three armoured recovery vehicles (ARV) for the army as part of its plan to modernise the armed forces. The government will also buy two brand new helicopters for the army to ensure necessary logistic support for the UN peacekeeping activities. The Main Battle Tanks (MBT-2000) and the ARVs will be bought from China, and the helicopters from France through government-to-government deals, which were recently signed. According to the deals, the cost of the tanks will be around Tk 1,201 crore, and the helicopters Tk 174 crore. Besides, a process is on to buy 18 brand new cannons. The purchases would be done from the budgetary allocations for the army, said government sources. The government increased the allocation for the armed forces to Tk 12,134 crore in the proposed budget for fiscal 2011-12 from Tk 10,918 crore in the current fiscal year. "The tanks will be bought through a government to government deal ensuring maximum transparency," Master General of Ordnance (MGO) of Bangladesh Army Maj Gen Abdul Matin told The Daily Star yesterday. "The purchase is being done as a part of modernisation of the Bangladesh Army," he said adding that the tanks will be delivered in phases over a span of 27 months. In the first phase 24 tanks will come within 20 months, and the rest will come in the second phase over the next 7 months. The payment for the purchase will be made in phases over the next eight years, said the major general. Maj Gen (retd) Amin Ahmed Chowdhury told The Daily Star that through this purchase, the military of the country will definitely get a boost. “If the authorities concerned that would supply the tanks share transfer of technologies then it would work.” Mag Gen Abdul Matin however said the Chinese government will provide training to technicians of Bangladesh Army in China and in Bangladesh for a good period of time so that the tanks and ARVs could be maintained properly. The training will be free of charge, he said adding that the China would also give adequate spare parts of the tanks. The government in 2003 took initiatives to buy tanks for the army, but that initiative did not see the light of day due to budgetary limitations, said the sources. The government was supposed to buy seven tanks last year and seven more this year. As only a Chinese company took part in the tender, the government cancelled it, and re-invited tender in which four companies from China, Russia, Ukraine, and Pakistan participated. Chinese company Norinco was selected as the lowest bidder. Later the army requested the government to buy 44 tanks instead of 14. A five-member committee headed by Maj Gen Abdul Matin signed a deal with the Chinese defence ministry on June 14 to purchase the tanks. According to the deal, China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) will deliver the tanks. Matin said Eurocopter, a global helicopter manufacturing company in France, will supply the two helicopters by July next year. The two helicopters will be used in UN peacekeeping missions, he said. The committee chief said they have signed a draft deal with the countries concerned to purchase 18 new cannons. The agreement will be finalised next year, he added. Bangladesh first got tanks in 1974 during Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's trip to Egypt. The then Egyptian president Anwar Sadat presented Bangabandhu with 44 tanks that were in good shape, said government sources.

The Bangladesh navy has purchased two Ruag Aviation Do 228NG aircraft for maritime patrol and rescue missions. The Do 228NGs will become the navy's first fixed-wing aircraft, said Ruag. The deal also includes crew training services and aircraft maintenance on-site in Bangladesh. Both aircraft are due for delivery in mid-2013. Ruag said that the Do 228NG is a modernised version of the Do 228-212 that first flew in the 1980s. In the maritime patrol application the aircraft is useful for detecting oil slicks, performing border and fisheries patrol duties and conducting environmental research, it said. Ruag will perform the final assembly of the aircraft and make customer-specific installations, such as radios and navigation aids, at its Oberpfaffenhofen factory near Munich, Germany. Alexander Müller, Ruag's vice-president military aviation Germany, attributed the Bangladeshi selection of the Do 228NG to its "cost-effectiveness and ease of use". The Bangladesh navy last year signed an order for two AgustaWestland AW109E Power helicopters.
