A fighter aircraft of Bangladesh Air Force crashed at Shah Amanat International Airport in the port city yesterday. Flight Lt Muntasin, the lone pilot of the aircraft A-5, managed to eject by parachute, said SM Joynal Abedin, duty manager of the airport.
The pilot sustained minor head injuries and was taken to the air force hospital at Sergeant Zahirul Haq Airbase at Potenga.
The accident happened around 12:20pm when the aircraft was landing on the southern runway after a training session.
It crashed seconds before touching down the ground when its rear wheel caught fire, Joynal said.
Later, the flame spread through the entire aircraft, he said, adding that the civil aviation authorities managed to douse the blaze within a few minutes.
“The aircraft exploded with a big bang when it crashed. Then a coiling cloud of smoke went skyward,” said Abu Taher, who saw the crash.
The accident stopped the activities of the airport for an hour. However, it did not disrupt the flight operation, as no commercial flights were scheduled to take off during the one hour. thedailystar

- Air force gets FM-90 missiles
Dhaka, Dec 4 (bdnews24.com)—Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) has been armed with first ever surface-to-air missiles.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday inaugurated the low-range FM-90 anti-aircraft missile system at a function at the Kurmitola Air Base.
Air Force chief air marshal Shah M Ziaur Rahman received her.
She said that introduction of this Short Range Air Defence System (SRADS) is a big step forward towards modernisation of the air force.
"The government will continue with its efforts to modernise the armed forces," Hasina said.
She said this advanced all-weather surface to air missile system has been introduced with the assistance of China. This ground-based air defence weapon system is capable of hitting targets flying at a low or very high altitude.
While addressing the function, the prime minister mentioned steps her 1996-2001 government had taken to modernise the air force.
"We have already completed a fully fledged air base and maintenance unit in Cox's Bazar during this tenure while many other development projects are going on."
Hasina urged the members of the BAF to acquire professional skills to become efficient pilots, engineers and air force personnel.
Later, the prime minister inaugurated the Bangabandhu Aeronautical Centre built with help of China at the Kurmitola base in the city.
Air Force officials said the Centre would be able to repair damaged aircraft and helicopters while light tools and parts of aircraft would be manufactured there.
Several ministers of the cabinet, advisors to the prime minister, chiefs of the army and navy, Armed Forces Division principal staff officer and high military and government officials were also present at the programme.

- Bangladesh eyeing purchase of 10 Russian Yak-130 aircraft
Dhaka, Feb 15 (bdnes24.com) -- Bangladesh is eyeing possible purchase of 10 Russian-made Yak-130 lead-in fighter trainer aircraft, a news report said on Wednesday.
Russia's official news agency Itar-Tass in a Singapore-datelined report said on Wednesday that talks were at the initial stage.
"Bangladesh has a big budget, more to it, a state loan might be used," president of Russia's aircraft building corporation Irkut Alexei Fyoforov was quoted as saying by the agency.
Fyoforov reportedly said the market capacity for Yak-130 aircraft might reach 2,500 planes till the year 2020.
"We hope to grip from 25 to 30 percent of this market," he was quoted as saying.
The Yakovlev Yak-130 (NATO reporting name: Mitten) is a subsonic two-seat advanced jet trainer/light attack aircraft or lead-in fighter trainer (LIFT) developed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau.
Development of the plane began in 1991, and the maiden flight was conducted on April 26, 1996, the report said.
In 2005, it won a Russian government tender for training aircraft, and in 2009 the first planes were put into service in the Russian Air Force.
As an advanced training aircraft, the Yak-130 is able to replicate the characteristics of several 4+ generation fighters as well as the fifth-generation Sukhoi T-50, it said.
It can also perform light-attack and reconnaissance duties, carrying a combat load of 3,000 kilogrammes.
The report could not be independently confirmed.

- The first Large Patrol Craft (LPC) for Bangladesh Navy launched
Captain AM Quamrul Huq, as the representative of Bangladesh Navy, Assistant Defence Attaché (Navy) of Bangladesh Embassy in China, high officials from the Chinese side and representatives from Bangladesh community in Wuhan were present at the ceremony, says an ISPR release.
The BN Large Patrol Craft have an overall length of 64m and displacement 648 tons at a top speed of 28 knots.
Each LPC has been armed with Surface-to-Surface Missile, Guns and Subsurface Weapons integrated with command and control system, including the state-of-the-art combat, navigation, communication systems and other sophisticated machinery and equipment.
These Large Patrol Crafts have been constructed to suit Bangladesh Navy’s specific requirements and are highly potent platforms.
Their mission spans the entire spectrum of naval warfare, including Air, Surface and Sub-surface. They will be primarily deployed to perform maritime defence and surveillance in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Bangladesh.
They will also be used for maritime search and rescue, fishery and natural resources protection, as well as law enforcement duties.
The second warship under the present project is expected to be launched soon. After necessary tests and trials, the ships will soon join BN Flotilla in Bangladesh.
Through this, Bangladesh would step ahead in implementing the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s vision of a stronger navy.
The present government has taken up a detailed plan for induction of various warships, helicopter and aircraft to upgrade the navy into a three dimensional force. This shipbuilding project would also enhance Bangladesh-China friendship, the release added. http://www.daily-sun.com/index.php?view=details&archiev=yes&arch_date=27-08-2012&type=&pub_no=243&cat_id=1&menu_id=10&news_type_id=1&news_id=50243 _________________

- Bangladesh buying warship from China
Bangladesh government has placed order with China's Wuchan Shipyard for supplying two sophisticated warships, one of which shall be handed over to Bangladesh by next year. The warship sized 64 meter in length with the capacity of 648 tons has highest speed of 28 nautical miles. The manufacturers of these warships are paying attention to the special requisition of the Bangladesh Navy keeping various types of most sophistical weapons and equipment. China earlier supplied similar warships to Pakistan. With the placement of order for supplying warships, Bangladesh has entered new vista of defense cooperation with China.
Bangladesh government has also decided to procure a number of sophisticated helicopters, aircrafts and warships for the domestic security as well as sufficient efficiency of safeguarding country's interest.
Bangladesh Navy has also decided to add Corvet and Off-the Shelve frigate in near future. It has already procured two more warships named 'Bijoy' and 'Dhoshwari'. Sholder launched surface-to-air missile system has been added in these warships. It has purchased two helicopters for another warship named 'Bangabandhu'.
According to information, Bangladesh Navy has earlier purchased 21 units of high-speed boats. Additionally manufacturing of two units of maritime patrol aircrafts, five units of patrol crafts and one oil tanker is undergoing now. The current government in Bangladesh has made an elaborate plan for significantly strengthening its defense facilities by procuring huge number of military hardware as well as sophisticated equipment and weapons with the target of transforming Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Air Force and Bangladesh Navy into sufficiently advanced on facing any internal or external security threats. Special emphasis is being given to strengthening Bangladesh Navy for safeguarding huge natural resources in the Bay of Bengal. It is believed by economic and petroleum experts that by 2030, Bangladesh's economy will grow hugely thus placing the country to the economic status of developed nations, if the petroleum resources within the Bay of Bengal will be properly explored. weeklyblitz

- The first indigenous Bangladeshi warship has been launched, paving the way for the country's navy to soon be able to deploy its own, home-grown design.
Assembled at the Khulna shipyard, it's a patrol boat equipped with a pair of 20mm guns and a pair of 37mm guns and it has a weight of 255 tonnes. 50.4 metres long, it's 7.5 metres wide, 4.1 metres high and it can carry out missions lasting up to seven days at a time.
It's also got a 20mph cruise speed and it was constructed through a development programme overseen and supported by the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) - one of the two dominant Chinese ship-manufacturing organisations alongside CSSC (the China State Shipbuilding Corporation).
First Bangladeshi Warship Now that the first Bangladeshi warship has been launched, officials at the shipyard foresee future Bangladeshi/Chinese naval collaborations taking place.
"The government has approved a 10-year perspective plan and, as part of this, we're procuring appropriate platforms, both new and off the shelf, including assets for our special warfare force", explained the chief of Bangladesh's naval staff, Vice Admiral Zahir Uddin Ahmed, adding: "We're also upgrading our existing fleet with capability to undertake emerging roles and maintain interoperability with friendly navies."
Bangladesh Navy Warships The first Khulna class patrol vessel started to be built in March 2011 and the entire development phase lasted 18 months. There'll be five additional Bangladesh Navy warships built, meaning six will ultimately enter service.
The Bangladesh Navy presently operates 89 vessels of various kinds, including frigates, Corvettes, fast attack craft and tugs. All of them are prefixed ‘BNS', in reference to their operator.
The Bangladesh Navy has now been established for over 40 years. Part of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, it employs some 24,000 naval personnel and it's just about to receive its first fixed-wing aircraft - two Dornier Do228 NG maritime patrollers. http://www.armedforces-int.com/news/first-indigenous-warship-for-bangladesh-navy.html
